DEAR EDUCATIONALLY NEGLECTED HOMESCHOOLERS

I’ve gathered some resources and tips and tricks on self-educating after educational neglect. This is only what I did and what I know helped me. I’m about to graduate college with honors after having no education past the age of 9. I wouldn’t be here without the following. Everything is free, and at/well above the standard for education in the US.

  • The holy grail: Khan Academy. Nearly every course you could take is available here, in order and by grade level. Their open-source free courses rival some of the college classes I’ve taken. This is your most solid resource.
  • For inattentive types: Crash Course offers a variety of courses that are snappy, entertaining, and extremely rewarding. They work for my ADHD brain. They also have college prep advice, which is essential if you’re looking to go to higher education with no classroom experience.
  • To catch up on your reading: There are certain books that you may have read had you gone to school that you’ve missed out on. This list is the most well-rounded and can fill you in on both children’s books and classic novels that are essential or at least extremely helpful to be familiar with. You can find a majority of these easily at a local library (and some for free in PDF form online low key). There are a few higher level classics in here that I’d highly recommend. If it doesn’t work for you, I’d always recommend asking your local librarian.
  • *BE AWARE* The book list I recommend suggests you read Harry Potter books, and given their transphobic author you may or may not want to read them. If you choose to, I’d highly recommend buying the books secondhand or borrowing from a library to avoid financially supporting a living author with dangerous and damaging views.
  • TEST, TEST, TEST: Again, Khan Academy is your go-to for this. I don’t personally like standardized testing, but going through SAT and ACT courses was the best way I found to really reveal my gaps so that I could supplement.
  • Finally: As much as you can, enjoy the process. Education can be thrilling and teach you so much about yourself, and help shape your view of the world. It can get frustrating, but I’d like to encourage you that everyone can learn. No pace is the perfect pace, and your learning style is the right learning style for you. In teaching yourself, be patient, be kind, and indulge in the subjects you really enjoy without neglecting others. You are your teacher. Give yourself what others chose not to.

Seconding Khan Academy as a fantastic resource

Campaign Matching for Hussam

Hussam's GFM is still very low on funds. They've only met a little over 12% of their goal, and although it is a large goal, I do think it's possible to reach, so I'll be doing a match for his campaign to help it along!

I can match up to $250 (USD), which is roughly €235, for a total of $500 (€470).

You can give to the GFM and then either send me a DM or ask (I won't post it publicly of course) with proof of your donation! I'll keep a tally of everything and keep you all updated on the count.

Here's Hussam's GFM:

He has a large family trying to leave Gaza right now, and time is limited. Please share and give what you can!

In summary: keypad locks on dressing rooms so no one can just wander in, panic buttons in areas where dancers are alone with customers, required education re: safety issues, handling /preventing sexual harassment, and identifying & stopping human trafficing. Clubs must have security on site and a written policy for handeling drunk or agressive clients. On the money side clubs are limited in how much of a dancer's payment they can take as their "fee" but they are allowed to sell liquor now which should make up for any lost profit.

This should make clubs physically safer and give employees more financial stabiliy/ make wage theft more difficult.

Yes they can sell liquor now! Those raids on gay bars is what prompted this change in laws and they added on the safety issues as well. I've already seen groups trying to organize nudist days at some gay bars in Seattle now.

i just don’t think “is dude gender neutral” is that productive of a conversation because a word can be gendered and still used regardless of gender. i call my male friends girlypop and my female friends man but i don’t think anybody would agree that those are somehow not gendered terms.

the real question is just “would you be willing to apologize and stop using a word if somebody told you it made them uncomfortable?” the answer to which in a surprising number of cases is no mostly because it seems like overall ppl r more upset abt getting accused of transphobia than they are abt being transphobic

there are still people in the notes of that thread failing to grasp that this isn't a hypothetical for me. I know trans people up here who had their front door covered with 'I ❤️ JKR' and 'adult human female' stickers. there are active terf groups who harrass queer cafés and bookshops and use her name as an in-group identifier on signs and t-shirts at protests and at pride. she actually personally funded a trans exclusionary women's crisis centre in edinburgh, after her followers hounded and harrassed an inclusive service into shutting down. she is a tangible threat to trans people here.

You can't separate the art from the artist if the artist makes herself the face of a hate group.

Yup, I also live in Edinburgh and see this kind of thing on the regular. And there are so many HP stores, or she's in many of the tour guide routes etc. JKR is probably currently like 25 miles away from me. The other day I walked past King's Cross to get the train back to Edinburgh and saw the still massive queue for the Platform 9 3/4 shop. I think what makes me saddest is how many people just...don't care that she funds hate groups.

I was a massive Potterhead and it was so formative to me growing up, and I'll always be sad that JKR was so desperate to hate trans people that she poisoned her own legacy for so many. The only way I ever go back to Hogwarts is maybe once a year reading a HP fanfic, usually by a marginalised creator who is actively challenging the bigoted aspects of the canon. It gets her no money and so it is the one way I'm comfortable separating the art and the artist, but even that's harder and harder to do these days. Hogwarts isn't an escape anymore, and hasn't been for a long time.

I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but since there are still many people who have are ignorant of what's been going on or how far her involvement with hate groups goes (spoiler: it doesn't stop at trans people), here's a video you can use for talking points with people who will be like, "well, I don't support her views, so it's okay if I get the latest game or visit a theme park to throw more money in her mouth"

TW for, well, transphobia, homophobia, anti-feminism, racism as talking points in the video

like to me there's so much charm in these weird little games that crop up every once in a while even if they're kinda unoriginal i feel a lot of indie games now are Super ambitious but like. sometimes all you need is an engine and a fun story

things like this were so much funnier when I could chalk them up to actual human error and not an algorithm but this one was still a LITTLE funny. I really want to watch the godzilla movie this machine thinks exists.
