i appreciate that i dont really ever come across truly insidious pseudoscience On Here but i do come across scientific misinformation in like. fuck. probably more than half of the popsci posts that circulate from time to time. i always feel like a "no fun allowed" killjoy getting annoyed over these esp bc, like i said, there's generally not really any actual harm associated with the Kind Of Incorrect that these posts are, but omg. please can we be a shade more skeptical besties. for the good of my blood pressure

today i found out that when monarch butterflies migrate south for the winter, all the ones that go across the middle of lake superior suddenly stop going south and go west for five miles and then continue south. which really freaked scientists out cos like What is in the Middle of Lake Superior what do Butterflies know that We Dont Is This The End Times etc. anyway turns out about a hundred million years ago there was a mountain there and the butterflies still think they gotta fly around it. classic butterflies

Y’all, unfortunately, this is just not true. A few months ago, I urged people on this site to be skeptical specifically about ecology & wildlife biology posts with no sources. This is a perfect example.

This post has made its rounds for ten years (originally posted in 2015), and the earliest source I have ever been able to find for this claim is an article posted in 2013, which says:

“Biologists, and certain geologists, believe that something was blocking the monarchs’ path. They believe that that part of Lake Superior might have once been one of the highest mountains ever to loom over North America.”

Who these “biologists” and “certain geologists” are is a mystery. The article links two sources:

  1. A 1996 publication on Monarch migrations in The Journal of Experimental Biology, which does not mention this lost mountain range.
  2. The 1974 nonfiction narrative Pilgrim at Tinker Creek by Annie Dillard.

Dillard is an acclaimed author and nature writer, but she is not a biologist or geologist and cannot be referenced as such. The referenced excerpt from Pilgrim at Tinker Creek:

Dillard credits this claim to nameless entomologists and a book with no title. It’s a dead end. Bear in mind, the entomologists and books who may have made this claim, which Dillard later read, would have done so pre-1974.

The truth about monarch butterfly migrations may lack the sci-fi/fantasy allure of a mountain range that exists only in a butterfly’s primordial memory, but it’s still incredible.

The geologic history of Gichigami, aka Lake Superior, is also extremely cool:

  1. The Lake Superior Basin’s Fiery Beginning (2002, some facts might have changed)
  2. Rockin’ the Rift, The Billion-Year-Old Split that Made Us (2018, working wih the author of the 2002 article)

But as far as I can find, there is no Monarchs’ memories of a long-lost mountain which dictates their modern-day migration route. If anyone has more insight on this, I would appreciate it, because I am not an entomologist. I specialize in marine science and scientific interpretation, and I only used those skills to find and present what I believe is the best available information on this topic. Thank you!

earlier this week Twitter user ppuccin0 tweeted about a fashion article that advised against tops with large floral patterns, saying the wearer was in danger of looking like a "ロマンティックおばさん," or a "romantic auntie." the tweet went viral with many agreeing that a "romantic auntie" sounded like a very nice thing to aspire to be, and some even posted illustrations or photos tagged with the trend

I just think everyone should take a moment to consider the question "what is your visual shorthand for cruelty?" and then follow it up with a critical "and who taught you that?"

specific examples include but are not limited to

  1. why is an evil timeline character design disabled? (why do the heroes go through equally punishing battles and never lose an arm, a leg, an eye?)
  2. why are the futuristic scifi terrorists uniformly darker skinned? (why are the heroes so much lighter?)
  3. why is the greedy boss fat? (why are the heroes skinny?)
  4. why is the criminal mastermind heavily scarred? (why is the brooding, traumatized hero unscathed?)
  5. why is the predatory creep a bearded person in a dress and makeup? (why are none of the heroes trans women?)
  6. who taught you that this is how things are?
  7. how long do you plan on repeating it?

guys the point is "reflect on how you have learned bigotry through exposure and you parrot it in your own works and in the fandoms you engage with without self awareness" not "tell me, specifically, what random motifs you think are evil"

on the flipside, to everyone adding notes about hooked noses, turbans + headscarves, nonwhite features and cultural clothing in general, mental and physical disorders, and surely others I've missed in recollection: you are entirely right and should say it.

#the hooked nose thing drives me bananas. i once very very gently pointed out to another fanfic writer#(in my very first fandom)#that perhaps adding a hooked nose description to a greedy cruel character was not the move#and they got sooooooo big mad at me for daring to imply that there might be an antisemetic implication there#i didn't frame it as them being unconsciously biased even i was just like. hey i'm sure you didn't think of this but#just so you know it kind of reads this way. i would want someone to tell me so i'm telling you#x_x
