Lion Art Study: Part 1
in order to both strengthen my general art skills and develop an original art style for Empyrean, I've been practicing lions a lot. this post is to share my progress, outlining my beginning research into realistic anatomy and colorations. Nearly all of these are drawn over real pictures of lions.
I began by outlining facial shapes for lions of varying ages and sexes. I didn't ad manes, colors or anything else, focusing on the face shapes.
I then outlined (nearly) whole bodies of lions. I made sure to use action poses to see how their flesh moved with the action. The biggest struggle is the hind legs, but I'm getting better at them.
I then studied the pelt colorations. I simplified the patterns in order to properly view them. Almost all lions have spots, even well into adulthood. They simply get fainter with time. These spots are used as camouflage.
I then focused closer on the face colorations. With the colors all being similar, I made sure to create a version that showed the separation clearly.
I moved onto manes next. All models shown have full and dark manes, I forgot to include models with lesser manes. I wanted to focus on the color gradients that can appear.
paws paws paws paws. This is the one I needed to practice the most. I love the shape of paws, and how versatile they can be when it comes it expression.
finally, I revisited lion faces. Instead of characteristics, I focused on how the facial muscles and skin move when expressing. As I was doing these, I realized I've been drawing the teeth wrong for years. I always drew four teeth between each set of canines, but there are actually six. Maybe my lions just have poor dental.
OK found it! I'm the og artist, accidentally deleted my old blog lmfao <3
we should be getting iced coffee and going to creepy and musty antique stores together why must we be separated by our screens…
WhY We so far awwwAAAY <33
Was at the art museum earlier and i have a new favourite painting
Is this not the cutest??? Its called ”Me and Brita” and this guy in 1895 was like ”i love this kid so much imma do a painting of us having fun so the world will always know how much i loved her and what a good time we had”
the painting in the background is looking at them like “my word what a cool pair”
More specifically that is Carl Larsson with one of his 8 children.
He came from a extremely poor and abusive background but worked his way into fine society, where he fell in love with fellow artist Karin Bergöö, and his works shifted to painting his home life.
Painting titled "My Loved Ones"
[in reference to his career] "the most immediate and lasting part of my life's work. these pictures are of course a very genuine expression of my personality, of my deepest feelings, of all my limitless love for my wife and children."
OMFG I used to work at Carl’s house which in now a museum in Falun, Sweden, and now his art is on my dash!
I could tell so many stories about this family, but to sum it up they lived the definition of what we would call a cottagecore life where both Carl and Karin worked as artists in their dream house that they designed and built together. It really was an artist’s home built with pure love, and also a big contrast to what a typical Swedish home looked like at the time. The late 1800s trend was to have a dark home with gothic vibes and brown and dark red colours. The Larsson’s home though is bright and colourful with big windows and homemade textiles sewn by Karin.
I also wanted to tell a bit about Brita, the cute little girl on her father’s shoulders in the painting in the original post. She was the fifth child of seven and felt sometimes like she didn’t get enough attention from her dad as a middle child in a big family. To get more time with her dad she would ask him to paint only her as often as possible since then she could talk to him without any of her siblings annoying them. This is how she became the most painted of all the children with hundreds of portraits made with her as the model. She was 89 years old when she died in 1982 and loved to talk about her childhood and those many, many painting sessions with dad.
This is one of my favourite paintings of Carl Larsson, A Viking Raid in Dalarna. Here we have all the children in a boat during a cool summer’s eve (from left, Pontus, Brita, Lisbeth, Ulf, Kersti, Esbjörn, Suzanne).
I reblogged this post too quickly before checking the notes and seeing this fantastic addition. I love how Brita came up with a solution to her problem -- wanting some undivided attention from her father -- in a way that worked for both of them.
what drugs were they on when they made this
Cab Calloway rotascoped!
Whoever thought of this was drinking absinthe
Thanks, Now I have nightmares
this was long before cartoons were ever thought of as ‘for kids’, the target audience of this one was roughly 20-40 betty boop cartoons featuring cab calloway singing, yes, but slang has changed so much you dont realize he was singing about opium, sugar daddies, death, weed, sex, booze, and gambling back when gambling was nearly as tabboo as sex and drugs. ‘minnie the moocher’ where cab calloway is a dancing walrus is specifically about someone who does literally everything on that list but die
most of the animation studios had their ‘thing’ to make their animation stand out, disney had fluid motion linked with quality music, warner brothers had top notch dialogue with carefully crafted facial expressions, MGM had comedic timing down to the individual frame that no live action comedian could dream of achieving, terrytoons had the budget of a ham sandwitch and a fistfull of nickels fleischer studios however had authentic jazz and heavy toned subject matter, often crossing the line of what we think of as ‘cartoon violence’ into realistic
idk why this is making me so emotional???
I love this. I’ve always had a love for cartoons
Cab Calloway, he was a legend performer and entertainer, although he’s listed as a jazz singer he did much more with his voice, his singing style and delivery was very unique. Cab (with his band) was the first black artist to sell over a million copies of a single record and he paved the way for many artists to come. Happy Black History Month.
sorry to make this long post longer, but I feel like it needed some actual photos of Cab Calloway, who is, in fact, the greatest
A little test test to see how my comic pages upload on Tumblr ♥ A bonus comic featuring part of my cast in my TLK-fan comic "The Golden Rule" I'll most likely end up uploading it here as well, but if this has made you curious, you can read it on my DeviantArt, Even though it's currently on Hiatus bit it'll return somewhere this yet ♥ Enjoy ♥

absolutely fascinated by this raw pixels on an emulator vs how the game was actually supposed to look on old tvs twitter
People say that old games dont look as good as they remember
Its because they legitimately dont.
The “fuzz” from CRT monitors was something that was definitely accounted for and taken advantage of back in the day when it came to video games! While this effect is noticeable in 3D games, it’s MUCH more visible when it comes to 2D sprites:
Just look how much more depth these simple sprites of Princess Peach and Bowser from Super Mario RPG seem to have when seen through the “dots” of a CRT TV screen!
I somehow did not know this!?!?!?
One of the clearest examples of this is using the effect for transparent waterfalls in the MegaDrive Sonic games
My absolutely favourite example of this is with Dracula's eyes in Castlevania
this one’s a few days late due to having a lot of doctors appointments sorry it’s just 9 pages, and about some rats… it’s more symbolic than anything really
