Hello! 👋 I’m a cardholding member and a huge fan of your mission! Would you happen to have a newsletter I could sign up for, or a way to sign up for alerts when new books are added to the catalogue? Thanks for all you do!

Avatar

Hello!! hell yeah we do. in the bottom left corner of each page of our website there’s a ‘stay in the loop’ box you can fill in your email to get our newsletters.

they come out once a month (wild circumstances aside, occasionally there might be a bonus newsletter) and usually give a breakdown of highlights from the past month + some key things coming down the pipe for next month. (our April one just came out yesterday! you can read it & find previous months newsletters here)

for more granular notifications of when a specific item may get added to our catalogue we recommend putting a ‘notify me’ tag on it! we see those on our end, and it is one of the factors that helps inform purchasing. if you put a notify me tag on a specific item, you’ll get a direct notification if/when we purchase it, and will have the chance to be one of the first in line to check it out!

Your collection on Libby is amazing 😭 I wanted to read a few books for Lesbian Visibility Week but I'm in Delhi, India and I can't access anything

thank you!!! <3

It’s been so delightful to see all the love & support from folks internationally. we wish we could do QLL world-wide, but unfortunately we simply don’t have that kind of capacity at this time. hopefully you can at least use our recommendations as inspiration to track down some that you may have access to through your local systems!

outside of that, if we’re talking Lesbian Visibility Week, there’s always open access materials like Stone Butch Blues - available for free always to anyone anywhere with an internet connection to download from Leslie Feinberg’s website.

Some other great materials that are freely available include;

⚠️PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT⚠️

The Queer Liberation Library is, as the name suggests, a digital library centered around queer literature. They offer library cards to anyone in any place, all you need in order to sign up is an email address. Then you can access their catalog online or through apps like Libby.

When I signed up I received an email that said there’s sometimes a waitlist, but I should have my card within a week or else someone would get back to me within that timeframe to explain if I had to wait longer. I ended up getting my card after only a couple of days.

Their website is very accessible and easy to use. My favorite features are the button at the bottom of the screen which lets you switch between light and dark mode, and the Quick Exit banner along the top of the page that doesn’t go away regardless of where you navigate on the site.

This is such an incredible resource and I can’t believe I didn’t know about it until very recently. I want every queer person to know about it! They have accounts on most of the major social media sites (such as tiktok, Instagram, even here on tumblr at @queerliblib). There’s also a place on their website where you can suggest books they should add to their catalog.

After you get your card, I’d suggest the first book you read to be Beyond the Gender Binary by Alok Vaid-Menon. It is a short but powerful little book that I think is an incredibly concise analysis of societal gender-based discrimination, and a great place to start a lot of really important discussions. I listened to the audiobook this morning (it was only an hour long, which is a win for my trash attention span) and I couldn’t believe how good it was for so little page time.

I will absolutely be reading the rest of the Pocket Change Collective (the series which Beyond the Gender Binary is part of) and I can’t wait to see what I’ll learn from them.

Do you guys have any fliers or materials handy that people can print off to hand out to spread the word that way? I was thinking of making one for some queer friendly and queer owned businesses in my area if not, but I thought I'd check (and make sure it was also cool with you guys to spread the word that way). Just explaining what the project is and how to sign up.

Hello! indeed we do.

go nuts! paste these up/hand out any/everywhere you’d like

just gonna reblog this with some fresh upDATES check ‘em out

Print these out (at work! don’t use your own ink) and drop them in coffee shops, paste them on telephone poles, share with your friends and go nuts at festivals

It has multiple POVs (including some of younger queer characters), but one of the main POV characters in A Day of Fallen Night is a 50 year old lesbian who's been with her love interest for the past 30 years before the story starts.

The Samantha Shannon one? it’s in our wishlist along with The Priory of the Orange Tree, but we haven’t been able to buy it yet!

Hi! Are you looking for any additional help? I'd love to volunteer

Hi! So, we do have a volunteer form here, which you’re welcome to fill out with what sorts of skills you could bring.

however. (and this is a pretty big however) we honestly don’t know yet when we’d realistically be able to call on more volunteers. we want to do a volunteer program right. one that’s well organized & structured so that everyone has a good experience, and so that it’s useful & sustainable for our needs as well.

turns out that’s a lot of work to put together! and as our steering committee is also 100% volunteer with outside day-jobs, we haven’t had the capacity to put together a volunteer program yet. At the point in the future when we do have a volunteer program set up we absolutely will be reaching out to people who have filled out that form!

Hello! I don't usually have trouble finding queer romances wherein the characters are in their 20s or 30s. But, I'm in my 50s. Do you have any recommendations for queer romances which revolve around middle-aged characters?

Avatar

Hello! yes, absolutely - there are so so many that we’re hoping to buy over the next few months, but for those that are in our collection right now we’ve got:

  • Mimosa - a graphic novel about a group of queers finding community in their 30’s & 40’s
  • The Four Profound Weaves - centers two older trans protagonists
  • Bingo Love - separated in their youth, two grandmothers find each-other again in their mid-60’s
  • No Strings Attached - a mother & recent divorcée takes steps to change her life

happy reading <3

Also the third Moonlighters book by Anita Kelly, either has late 40s or early 50s leads and I LOVE them.
