Kristin Andreassen with Jefferson Hamer, Alec Spiegelman and Stephanie Coleman Friday, February 5th, Doors 8:00, music at 8:30pm

It’s the 3rd Annual Kristin Andreassen Valentine’s Day (or thereabouts) show at the House of Love! Kristin has been, in her own words, “writing and scheming” her next record in her new home in Nashville–I can’t wait to hear what she’s been up to. Very excited, too, that she is bringing along three more of our favorite lovelies (superlative musicians, all)– Jefferson Hamer, Alec Spiegelman and Stephanie Coleman to back her up and maybe they’ll even sing a few of their own songs. Hope you can make it!

Kristin Andreassen

With her 2015 debut studio album Gondolier, Kristin Andreassen took her place as one of the most visceral and creative lyricists to emerge from today’s roots music scene. Featuring intricate guitar duets, expert harmonies, lush woodwind and string arrangements, and Kristin’s trademark body percussion as vocal accompaniment, it’s nevertheless the writing itself that stands out. Kristin confronts big themes with deceptive simplicity, singing from the perspective of a soldier awaiting battle: “Dawn has barely broken when they call us up above / I’m thinking only of my life, sorry my love.”

Kristin spent her formative years steeped in traditional American music; she played guitar with the Rounder Records stringband Uncle Earl and toured as a principal dancer with Maryland’s Appalachian clogging ensemble, Footworks. Her early songwriting efforts often combined these worlds of old time song and percussive dance, as in the pattycake-inspired “Crayola Doesn’t Make a Color for Your Eyes,” which went to #1 on kids’ radio and has been covered by choirs, marching bands, and by Tyne Daly in her off-Broadway cabaret. But Gondolier doesn't sound like old time music. Recorded while living in New York City, these songs tilt toward the futuristic-yet-acoustic, reflecting collaborations and tours with neighboring innovators in pop, rock and folk, including Lucius, Jeffrey Lewis, Dawn Landes, Son Lux, members of Punch Brothers, Cuddle Magic, So Percussion and Field Report, and Kristin's dear friends and sometimes bandmates Jefferson Hamer, Aoife O’Donovan and Abigail Washburn.

Kristin is now writing and scheming toward a follow-up album in her new home of Nashville, Tennessee.
