so I see you posting about The Monkees a lot and I have to confess that I'm not very familiar with them.
if you were to recommend a song or two for someone to start with, what songs would you recommend?
Oooh oooh i am so glad you asked!!!
Ngl the song you are probably most familiar with by them is “I’m a Believer”, and while if you haven’t listened to it i suggest you do (Micky’s voice is angelic imo), compared to their other songs it is kinda mid imo. In terms of their big hits, i recommend “Last Train to Clarksville” and “Daydream Believer”.
If you are more of a country fan I recommend “Papa Gene’s Blues” and “The Kind of Girl I Could Love”. If you like psychedelic music i recommend “Long Title: Do I Have To Do This All Over Again?”. Looking for something a little harder? “I’m Not Your Steppin’ Stone” or “Randy Scouse Git” aka “Alternate Title” (my personal fav). Like 80’s music? “Gettin’ In” and “Secret Heart” are absolute bangers. The great thing about this band is that their music covers a bunch of different genres so i am sure you will find something you like!!
I also recommend checking out the TV show since it is how they got their start (they were originally just supposed to be a fictional band). Be warned, because it was the 60’s there are some SUPER racist episodes despite the show being very progressive and revolutionary for the time. If you want to avoid them, the episodes are “Monkee Chow Mein”, “Everywhere a Sheik Sheik”, “Son of a G*psy” and “It’s a Nice Place To Visit”.
I hope this was helpful and i didn’t overwhelm you with too much info!! I have been a fan since i was 10 so they are very near and dear to my heart.
