Hey! First of all, I adore your artwork. I’m new to tumblr and was wondering if you’ve got any tips for getting set up as an established art blog on here? Obviously I know you can’t accrue a load of followers suddenly overnight but any tips on getting recognition/interest would be greatly appreciated 🙏

Hey there!

Thank you so much!

I gotta be completely honest, I have no clue. I tend to just post some art on here and hope for the best! It's of course much easier to grow a following if you do fanart since a lot of people follow tags for their favorite media and look through that, so they'd likely end up seeing your work and follow you, if they like it. But networking aka making some art friends on here should do the trick as well! It all takes time tho, so just be patient. You'll find your community for sure if you post consitently!

Hey I love your sketchbook work. Can i ask what brush pens/markers you use?

Avatar

Hey!

Thank you! ✨️ And yes of course, I use these two bad boys:

Tombow Brushpen Fudenosuko with a soft tip!

Ecoline Brush Pen in a light warm gray tone!

I've been observing the ✨art✨ and I just have to know if you are familiar with samdoesart on YouTube?

Hey, yes of course I know him! Any specific reason why? I don't watch his videos, though.

Hello! Hope you're having a great day/night! I absolutely adore your art, you are one of my favourite artists. I love the way you shade and do backrounds. Also everytime I get into a new show I immediately see your art for it??

I was wondering if you had any advice on drawing more realistically (backrounds, anatomy etc) but still keeping a style?

Hey hey!

Thank you so much!

I have a pretty good understanding of facial structures, because before I got into drawing more semi-realisticly, I heavily focused on realistic portraits. Here are some example, these are from around 2019!

(yes, I was really into danmei and kpop back then, haha)

I just always loved drawing/painting faces and it was all I did. But at some point I realized that I wanted to do more than that because just portraits felt super restricting. So it took me around 2-3 years to somewhat find my style. Thought it would be fun to show a little timeline! Advice will follow afterwards :)

2020

I began working on my OCs in 2020 and since I didn't have an exact reference to work off of, I struggled a lot. My art from this year is super wonky.

2021

Still wonky, but the Lokius obsession was the jumpstart into finding my style! My work from this year is all over the place haha, I was experimenting a lot.

2022

This first ofmd piece is pretty much the first drawing where you can see where my style is gonna go, which I think is pretty cool! This is the year I made the biggest progress cos I was drawing SO much. These two pieces are only six months apart. The one on the right was the first time I gave drawing a background a proper go, too! It was a good year.

2023

And this is where I am now! I'm still constantly learning and improving, but I'd say I have a style you can recognize now!

Now here comes some actual advice, haha:

  • What I highly recommend you to do is to study your favorite artists as much as you can! I have like 5 A4 sketchbooks all from 2020 that I filled with sooooo many studies, where basically all I did was look at artists I like and copy how they draw stuff, to try and figure out how to stylize certain things. Some of my favorite artists are Ami Thompson, Velinxi and TB Choi. But I also liked to just scroll through pinterest and study all the art I came across that I liked! For example, if I saw a really great drawing of a pair of pants I would copy it many times in my sketchbook and try to learn how they stylized the folds. Doing this for a prolongued period of time will naturally improve your own work! It'll be difficult at first, but you gotta push through, it's gonna be worth it!
  • I also highly recommend studying unique faces to try and avoid the same-face syndrome. Find some cool looking people and try to draw them as simple as you can! Maybe even draw a little timeline where you first draw them as cartoon-y as you can, and keep going until you end up with a more detailed, realistic drawing. Maybe in the middle of it you find a step that feels the most fun to you, so you can try to build on that! It's a great way to figure out what kind of style might be the best for you.

Here are some cool faces I found on pinterest!

I have a pinterest board with many more!

  • One REALLY important part of learning how to draw all kinds of things is to understand forms and shapes and how to manipulate them. I have so many pages in my sketchbook filled with just shapes that I drew from all kinds of angles without any references.

This is a great video on it:

Learning how to do this is so crucial! Young artists often think they first have to learn all kinds of detailed anatomy before doing anything else, but all that's gonna do is make you tired and hate drawing. Shapes are where it's at! Once you understand how shapes work and which ones to use for certain parts of bodies or objects, drawing is gonna get so much easier! Once you understand them, you can get into details such as muscles and bones!

  • And honestly the most important point is to just absolutely love what you're doing! I wouldn't be doing this if it wasn't for the fact that I get extreme hyperfixations on certain media that turn me into some kind of beast where I can suddenly draw 10 detailed illustrations a week, haha. Just be passionate about what you do, find something you REALLY love and go crazy!

I really hope this was somewhat helpful! My inbox is always open if there's any more questions :)

Hey! I told you a while ago that a friend of mine will be at DoKomi and I could have her give you something from me, but she informed me it might be hard to find you since it's very big :// so I was stalking your socials to admire your art and console myself

ANYWAY, my ask is, can we know the backstory of Minkus' name ? And tell him good boi from me bcs he's just so fk cute 🙇🏼

Avatar

Hey!

Once I know my booth number, I will post it on here! Dokomi now has an app that you can download that let's you find booths more easily in case your friend would like to try that! It helped me out a lot when I tried to find my friends last year, haha.

And of course! I adopted her about two years ago. I found a listing for a young bengal cat on ebay, so I started talking to the owner. I honestly just sent a message to any listing that showed up cos I was very desperate, haha. At first I checked my local shelters, of course, but there was no cat that fit what I had to offer (most of them were outdoor cats and could only be adopted in pairs. I was looking for an indoor cat that was fine with being on their own)

The woman on ebay informed me that the bengal was already taken, but we somehow ended up talking some more and she told me that she had an elderly cat at home that she adopted after her grandma passed, and she wasn't getting along with the bengals. They had to keep her in a separte, tiny room, because the bengals would constantly gang up on her. Her name was already Minka! This was the very first picture she sent me:

This moment made me believe in love at first sight. I told her right away that I'd love to adopt her, so I got to meet her a few days after.

I was told that she's very shy and anxious. The first time I tried to pet her she immediately hissed at me. But I wanted her anyways, so just a few days afterwards she was mine! The first cat I ever had.

The funny thing is, she's not shy or anxious at all. She's super affectionate and talkative! You can hold full conversatiosn with her and I can't go anywhere without her wanting to sit in my lap. She doesn't scratch or bite either which is a fun bonus. She's just a ball full of love!

But yes, sorry for giving you the full backstory instead of just the story about her name. I just really love talking about her, she's my everything :')

I didn't change her name cos she listens to the name Minka, but I usually just called her Minkus or Minkus Binkus Stinkus!

take another picture of my child, thanks for letting em talk about her!

Your backgrounds are so impressive and I always really struggle with them. Do you have any tips?

Hey!

I gotta be completely honest cos I honestly don't know what I'm doing most of the time, especially when it comes to backgrounds, haha. It's still something I try to improve at. I'm happy to hear that you like them tho!

When I do draw backgrounds, I like to stay simple. I'm mostly focused on drawing characters, so when I do draw backgrounds, I add them to compliment the characters, rather than to distract from them.

I'm not the right person to give tips on this though, but I'd like to redirect you to some great resources:

I'm currently taking a class over on schoolism. It's a class by Airi Pan on Foolproof Concept Art, it's been super helpful so far! The subscription is 30€ a month, which I know is a LOT for many people. For me as well, but I'm just paying this one month for this class and then I'll cancel it until I'm done with art school, cos I'm planning to take more classes afterwards. But if you can afford it, I can really recommend checking it out!

But there's of course also amazing free tutorials, for example:

YouTube is PACKED with incredible art tutorials!

I also made this PDF with art resources for my fellow art school students a while back, so maybe it's helpful for you guys as well! Feel free to download it. It's in german, but it's mostly just links anyways! :)
