The train was packed for some reason. It was 1:30pm in the afternoon, lunch time. Everyone should rightfully be somewhere eating or in school but it felt like the whole world was packed on your train that day. You jostled with chattering schoolgirls and equally giggly office women as the train rocked on its tracks. What the heck was everyone doing here?
It’s safe to say you were pissed. You had left school early because of the harsh pounding in your skull, thinking you could take a short peaceful nap on the train, but that was clearly impossible now. The weak air-conditioning tried pathetically to cool all the warm bodies in the car as the afternoon sunlight streaked through the windows. You tried to block out all the chatter, feeling your headache worsen by the minute.
The train made a sudden turn and a collective shriek rose up from the crowd.
“Ohh oppa, are you okay?” someone asked worriedly. “Did you fall? Are you hurt anywhere?”
The questions rippled through the train car and you realized, with a start, that most of the attention was centred on a reddish-brown, curly-haired boy who was bowing shyly at everyone, reassuring the crowd that yes, in fact, he was perfectly fine. He wore a brown coat and white t-shirt and stood next to a metal pole near the doors. No wonder it had been so hard to get inside just now.
He was, after all, Boo Seungkwan: variety star, top-class reality show host, prime-time radio DJ, and main vocalist of famous boy-group Seventeen.
You disliked him instantly.
It was for no other reason but the fact that all these people were in your train because of him. And you were so tired and sick and hot. You had never been a fan but right now you really, really wished he would disappear and leave you and your train alone. What is he even doing here? Doesn’t he have a chauffeur to drive him around?
The rest of the train ride went much the same. The train would make an unexpected turn, the crowd would stumble slightly, and one, five, ten voices would call out to Boo Seungkwan, asking whether he was okay. And each time he would give that same polite smile and bow at everyone and say he was fine.
You pushed your earphones deeper into your ears, trying to block them out. You couldn’t wait till it was your stop and you could go home and sleep for the rest of eternity.
Eventually the train neared your stop. You squeezed past the girls to get to the doors, glad to be soon leaving the crowded train behind. Slowly, Seungkwan picked up his bag from the ground and slung it across his shoulders. Your eyes widened – he was getting off at the same stop.
Murmurs erupted through the train and the crowd pushed forward as the news spread. In the reflection of the windows, you could see he was uncomfortable – and worried.
“Please be careful okay guys!” he called with fake cheerfulness. “No pushing!”
“Okay!” the crowd roared back, all-smiles, but you never know what a fan-crazed crowd could do. The moment the doors opened you were spit out of there, the crowd surging out like a giant tsunami onto an unsuspecting beach. Unsurprisingly, you fell.
Your eyes widened as you looked back at the stampede that was heading towards you. You scrambled to get to your feet when you felt a strong hand pull you up roughly by the forearm. “What are you doing on the ground? You’ll get crushed–”
But the person didn’t finish.
His fingers slid to your bare-skin.
The world flooded white and another scene took shape before your eyes. You were no longer in the crowded train station – you were on a grassy hill, overlooking a blue sea and it was windy. You looked up from the book you were reading and saw the smiling face of your daughter running towards you. She held her hands out, demanding to be picked up and behind her a dark-haired man chased after. He stopped and bent over panting after seeing that she was safe with you.
You laughed, walking towards him. In your arms, your little girl giggled.
“Yah, Seungkwan,” you pretended to scold, “Can’t you keep your eyes on her for one second?”
“It’s been an hour!” he straightened, protesting. “She was looking for you!”
You just laughed and pat his cheek even though you knew he was probably a little angry at you. Seungkwan couldn’t stay mad for very long and you used it to your advantaged. You kissed his cheek. “Sorry honey, I was too absorbed in my work.”
Then you made your little girl kiss him on the other side.
“Are we better now?” you asked sweetly.
He pouted. “Just because you know I’m soft doesn’t mean you can use it against me.”
“Of course I can!” you kissed him again. “Look! You’re all good.”
Again he pouted but you could see a smile slowly creeping onto his lips.
“Papa,” your daughter spoke up, “I want a kiss too.”
“You want a kiss! What will you give me for a kiss?”
She nodded enthusiastically. “I’ve been practising. Listen.”
Then she sang a pretty melody, with a voice as beautiful as her father’s. In this vision, you were happy. Outside the vision, you were happy too.
Tears sprang to your eyes. You looked up at the person who had helped you: Boo Seungkwan. His eyes were shiny too and there was that same unspoken utterance of happiness, just on the edge of his lips. This was your future with him.
You two lost contact as the crowd caught up to him, ripping him away from you. Everything fast-forwarded. The noise flooded your senses first. Then the tide of people pulled him further and further away despite his protests and you were left in the wake of the disaster with nothing but a thundering heart and the hollow ache of happiness lost.
Boo Seungkwan was your soulmate?
Boo Seungkwan was jittery. He was not himself and Lee Seokmin, his co-host on the radio show, could tell. He had been distracted since rehearsals and was not as talkative as he normally would be on air.
Seungkwan, on the other hand, was unaware of his friend’s sharp gaze on him. He was too busy thinking about you. All he knew was your face and the knowledge that you were the one he had been waiting for.
“Seungkwan!” a voice snapped him out of his reverie. “Penny for your thoughts?”
Seokmin laughed good-naturedly. “Ahh look at that… Something’s on our Kwan-nie’s mind and he doesn’t even remember he has a radio show to run!”
Seokmin imagined the listeners chuckling on the other end. “Seungkwan-ah! You’ve been distracted since the show started. What’s wrong?”
Seungkwan ducked his head apologetically, moving up towards the mic. He didn’t even realize he hadn’t spoken into it for a while now. “Ahh, I’m sorry everyone. I’ve just had a lot of things on my mind…”
“Is it safe to talk about it here?”
Seokmin perked his eyebrows. “What is it about?”
“It’s about…” Seungkwan looked up shyly. “Soulmates.”
“Ahhhh.” Seokmin nodded his head understandingly. “Everyone thinks about their soulmate. It’s nothing to be embarrassed about.”
“Honestly I’ve never really thought about my soulmate until today.”
Seokmin raised a brow at the younger boy. He was aware that he was going off script but soulmates were a popular topic and everyone liked listening about them. He looked to the sound director who gave him the go ahead. He prompted the younger boy. “Really? What happened?”
“Well…” Seungkwan twiddled his thumbs together. “I’ve found mine.”
Seokmin gasped and so did everyone else in the studio. “You did?”
“Yeah,” Seungkwan nodded slowly. “I’m pretty sure it was fate that we met. You know how I was telling you just now that I had to take a train because the car broke down just before I was supposed to come here?”
‘Well I met her on that train.” Everyone gasped again. “It was crowded inside and I didn’t even see her at first. When I did notice her she was standing in front of the door to get off, and she was frowning at her reflection. Ahh, I remember thinking, “If she smiled a little she would be really pretty.””
“Yahhh!” Seokmin cheered in approval.
“When the doors opened she started walking away really quickly and that’s when she fell. I ran to pick her up because I was afraid she would get crushed – and our skins touched.” Seungkwan hid his face bashfully. “Ahh I can’t describe to you the feeling, it was just… very nice. We saw our future together and personally, it made me feel so happy.”
“Wow…” Seokmin gasped. “That sounds like something out of a drama.”
“It even felt like a drama – time slowed down.”
“I can’t believe my dongsaeng found his soulmate before me!”
Seungkwan chuckled. “Sorry hyung.”
“So then what happenened?”
The smile dropped from Seungkwan’s face. “That’s when we got separated. It was very chaotic I think because it was lunchtime so when I turned around again I was outside the train station and she wasn’t there anymore. We didn’t even exchange names.”
Seokmin looked at him sadly and people in the studio looked sad too.
“I really want to find her again,” Seungkwan said quietly. No one said anything for a while – the sound director had decided background music was appropriate and a sad love song played through the studio.
“I KNOW!” Seokmin jumped up suddenly.
“Aish you scared me!” Seungkwan scolded.
Seokmin just grinned, hitting the younger boy playfully.
“Ah, ah! OW! Everyone,” Seungkwan spoke into his mic as Seokmin continued to hit him, “You can’t see it right now but Seokmin-hyung is currently abusing me.”
Seokmin laughed, speaking excitedly into his mic. “Everyone, I just came up with a great idea on how to help Seungkwan find his soulmate.”
“How?” Seungkwan was curious.
“You should sing for her.”
“Sing for her!” Seokmin repeated. “You have a singing segment later don’t you?”
Seokmin looked back to his director who held up a thumbs-up sign. Seokmin grinned. “See, you do have a singing segment! You should sing a song to convince her to come find you.”
“But what if she’s not listening?”
“If she wants to find you too, she will be.” Seokmin smiled kindly. “Just do it. Show her how much you love her.”
Seungkwan was hesitant but slowly, he agreed. It wasn’t a bad idea. And he could sing that song that his daughter had been singing – something only the two of you would know.
“Alright,” he nodded slowly. “I already had another song prepared but I think I’ll sing 밀리언조각, instead. A Million Pieces.”
“Yeah. It’s a song that… I think is more fitting for you, soulmate.”
On the other end of the radio, you shivered as he said that.
“Tonight you are a million pieces
You fill, fill and fill my heart deeply
You collect my broken heart
Tonight in the deepest place, your light fills me fully”
As the song ended, you made up your mind.
“Where are you going?” your mother called from the other room.
“To meet my soulmate,” you said determinedly. Your mother laughed behind you but you didn’t hear; you were already out the door.
You hope you weren’t too late. You ran over to the studio where they were recording. You two had gotten off at the same station so when you got home the first thing you did was search up the places he could’ve gone to. The radio station was only a few bus stops from your house.
When you got there you found there were many people waiting outside the building. You sighed in relief. That meant they still hadn’t left yet. You started to move towards the crowd but you hesitated. Somehow you knew waiting out there with them wasn’t the best idea. Seokmin and Seungkwan might not even look up into the crowd and then Seungkwan would never spot you.
Instead you travelled to the back of the building where the car park was and found a little metal door tucked in the corner labelled ‘service entrance’. On gut instinct you waited there for over an hour, fiddling with your phone to past the time.
As time passed, the worry in your stomach grew. Nothing happened. You heard the crowd outside disperse and you knew that meant that Seungkwan and Seokmin had probably left.
You heart sank to your feet.
This had been a bad idea. You felt stupid for thinking you could ever meet Seungkwan again. The sun was sinking behind the clouds – it was getting dark. You started walking out of the alley, dejected and more than a little embarrassed.
“Where do you think you’re going?” a voice stopped in your tracks. You turned around and there he was, smiling softly at you. You froze, shocked. He moved towards you, leaving only a small gap between the two of you.
“What’s your name?” his voice sounded richer in real life.
He cocked his head. “Are you afraid of me by any chance?”
“Gee, I don’t know, we’re in a dark alley, its twilight, I’m standing in front of super famous, super beautiful stranger and I think we’re supposed to be soulmates.” He laughed at your sudden word vomit. You blushed furiously.
“I’m terrified,” you amended quietly.
He laughed again, hugging you suddenly. “Ahh you’re so cute! And funny. I like you!”
You didn’t say anything – you were too embarrassed. His adoring smile only made you blush harder. He put his hands on your shoulders, looking you in the eye. “Would it be okay if I held your hand?”
You nodded mutely. When your hands touched, the little girl was finishing her song – the same song he had sung on the radio and brought you here. The vision slowly faded away and then it was you two again in the alley.
He broke out into a grin. “Hello Y/N, it’s nice to meet you. My name’s Boo Seungkwan. I think we have a beautiful future ahead of us.”
“I think so too, Boo Seungkwan.”
