Fucking benevolent bitch.

tomboyism is so funny to me. gender non-conformity for girls is acceptable for like two minutes between the ages of 8 and 10. beyond that it’s appalling and you’re a freak but for those two years…… they could’ve had it all

How common is grief in the animal kingdom

Grief requires first, the understanding of death (that it is permanent, that it is bodily, and that it is specific). Second, it requires sadness, the emotional response of missing the dead.

I wonder how many other animals can do both

I went to a farm with the kids I was teaching and they told us that when they take the babies away from the mother cows so they can produce milk the mother cows always cry, so I bet cows can feel grief.

I also read that elephants have funerary practices.

This is an interesting question though.

nothing funnier to me than when AI does math wrong. like I get why it happens, it's a language model that's treating the numbers you feed it as words rather than integers and then giving you an answer based on how those words typically appear in a block of text instead of actually performing a calculation. but the one thing computers are genuinely incredible at. you fucked up a perfectly good calculator is what you did, look at it it's got hallucinations

Cradle to the Grave - the Kamino Cadet Redeux. 2024

It's been a little under a year since I posted the original art at the top, and I needed to revisit it. It's gotten so much reach, and touched so many people.

But it's not the whole story.

Gallifreyan Headcanons

Looming:

Looming is a form of genetic engineering which developed in the Rassilonian era. The genetic material of partners, a greater family or really whoever can get clearance is used to create a new Time Tot. Looming was developed to improve quality of life but also for the preferences of the parents. (Within the law ofc)

Timelords univerally loom their children. It is free to all levels of society and seen as the norm. To be unloomed would be seen as extremely unsual.

The Karn do not use looms and only reproduce by traditional means. This is to keep the male underclass's population steady.

Shobogans practice both natural and loom reproduction. Though they rarely create loomed children from two partners and prefer the greater family as a base. (More diversity) They prefer looming but due to their nomadic lifestyle, it is not always available.

Regeneration:

Gallifreyan regeneration is a process that becomes progressively difficult the more it is used similar to molting in crustaceans. As a result, the Timelords used their looming technology to limit the number of regenerations biologically possible to 13 so to avoid any inhumane and agonize deaths on Gallifrey.

Timelords regenerate on a moderate basis due to their sheltered lifestyle. They have no cultural taboos around it.

The Karn see regeneration as a cultural taboo. In theory, it is said that they see it as weakness to put yourself in a situation where one may die and to avoid facing death. In reality, the chance of one regeneration from male to female would upset the social system and lead to class ascension.

The Shobogans regenerate the most often. They live a wild life much more so than anyone besides a renegade.

Um... What is whump 😅

Well, like a number of fandom terms, that's a lot of different things to a lot of different people. If you look on a bunch of whump blogs, you will see almost as many answers to this question.

I personally feel it boils down to a genre founded on the way of showing a character's vulnerability in fiction without the necessarily using romance or sex. So generally that means some kind of illness or injury, where one character has to take care of another (or the much more recent version, which is one character hurting another character, with or without the care aspect).

It's been around in a variety of ways since fandom was a thing. The first name for the genre probably originated out of the Star Trek fandom, whose authors wrote "Get!Character" (for example, Get!Kirk or Get!Spock) fanfic in paper zines in the 1960s. The next term, "charactertorture" (for example, muldertorture) came out of The X-Files fandom in the 1990s. Livejournal and Fanfiction.net preferred the term "Hurt/Comfort" to refer to the genre as a whole, without tying it to a specific character or fandom. Finally, around 2005, we started seeing the actual term "whump" gracing entries to Gateworld forums, though originally it referred to "ShepWhump"- injuries and illnesses befalling the character John Sheppard of Stargate Atlantis, which later broadened to include characters from Stargate SG1 and then any other fandom or character. At this point, people who enjoyed whump were called "whumpers".

Around 2016-2018 there was a shift to include explicit torture without following it up with the care and comfort that had long been part of the genre. Now instead of the vulnerability coming only from opening oneself up to care in a dire situation, the vulnerability could be forced onto the character by another character. It is still to an extent accomplishing the goal of causing a character to experience vulnerability, but it depends on the author/reader/watcher as to which definition of whump they ascribe to. At this point, the term "whumper" started to refer to the character who was doing the hurting/torturing within the story, if there was one.

It's honestly been a relatively big split in some parts of the community, which is why you saw the poll I reblogged the other day asking whether people preferred whumperless whump (old definition) or whump with a whumper (new definition).

hey it's probably a really good idea to download a copy of your Master Promissory Note since most of them stipulate that your loans are *specifically owed to the Department of Education* and if you intend to dispute the debt in the wake of the DoE dissolving that will be really good to have

log in and then go to My Documents and download a copy of it. i'm serious. if trump dissolves the DoE entirely it may make the debt uncollectable depending on exactly how they do it, and he's too stupid to listen to lawyers that tell him when he's breaking the law. worst case you have an extra PDF on your computer. best case your student loans go away because you signed a contract to pay DoE and no one else. go download a copy.

Love the spirit of this, but they will probably use a debt assignment to legally transfer the debt to a new entity.

Investopedia has an article about the practice here: https://www.investopedia.com/terms/d/debtassignment.asp

Always a good idea to have a copy of your note, though! And the proper transfer process is described in the FDCPA (an act of congress), so if the new debt owner fails to provide appropriate notice, you may have relief options there. (Potentially dependent on the CFPB continuing to function, which it….might not…)

~not legal advice, just work experience in finance~

I stated this elsewhere but the Higher Education Act has specific language about when debt is allowed to be sold - they can't just sell it at any time for any reason, and all the terms of the Act would still apply to the loan since in most cases the MPN stipulates as much (since the actual terms of a promissory note can't be altered without consent even if the payee changes). Specifically, they cannot sell the debt if it "result[s] in any cost to the Federal Government". Reassigning the loans to another agency would incur a massive cost since that agency would have to hire new personnel and build new infrastructure, eliminating the possibility of a sale within the government, and a sale to a private third party would made debt validation very tricky for that party since FERPA would prevent disclosure of a borrower's SSN, student ID number (ergo, the account number), and the itemization of the debt without written consent, meaning in that scenario the borrower could most likely* refuse this disclosure, dispute the debt, and win pretty easily.

*not a lawyer

the bottom line, if they attempt to reassign your loans anywhere... REQUEST DEBT VALIDATION BEFORE PAYING A CENT.

there's something in the left hand of darkness about how estraven and genly's perceptions are both massively influenced by concepts of shifgrethor and gender respectively, but both struggle to actually explain what they actually MEAN. estraven can provide only the literal definition of the word, genly just. babbles trying to describe a woman.

i dunno. something about societal structures feeling unyielding to those who are raised in them but get soft around the edges when confronted by the unfamiliar

in the figure of “just a little guy, just a little birthday boy” is the image of 21st century ethics. everyone is constantly trying to like position themselves as uniquely non-agentic, to defer or deny what power they have or can have over others, to self-absolve by adopting an affect of ignorance or victimhood or perpetual adolescence that can be transmuted into moral righteousness

How'd you get into batman???

The embarrassing answer is I had a huge crush on two separate people who were into Batman so I got into it to see what the big deal was

Long-term this has been funny because I wound up so much deeper in the hole than either of them were so what happened was like

Me (Now genuinely invested): So who’s your favourite Robin

They: Oh haha I only really like the movies, isn’t there like three of them or something

Me:

Me: I’m cured
