Not to be rude or anything but they STILL have magical girls shows airing right now including but not limited to Precure which is on its 21ST SEASON!? Mewkledreamy, Pripara, AND some upcoming magical girl anime like Acro Trip, Cardcaptor Sakura Clear Card season 2, Kabushiki Gaisha Magi Lumiere, and if you expand your horizons to Korean animated shows you’ll find stuff like Teenieping, Rainbow Bubblegum, and Balala the Fairies!!

The only problem is of course companies aren’t really willing to license magical girl shows for very obvious reasons but there is something called… pie-ratting… let’s just say, and it’s always morally correct if it’s a show that’s not licensed in your region 👍

In conclusion, THE MAGICAL GIRL GENRE IS NOT DEAD OR STAGNANT! THEY STILL AIR MAGICAL GIRL SHOWS, YOU JUST HAVE TO SEEK THEM OUT INSTEAD OF COMPLAINING ABOUT SUPPOSEDLY NO MAGICAL GIRL SHOWS AND WALLOWING IN YOUR NOSTALGIA GOGGLES, THE MAGICAL GIRL GENRE STILL EXISTS AND IT WILL NEVER TRULY DIE OUT!!!

Why should I look for the FEW ones that there are now (it's nothing compared to other genres, be for real) as if they're some kind of second-class category? The genre died before 2015, the contents that we have now are all remakes, sequels or new arcs of old anime/manga and the few original ones that are relatively new (2019-2023) and still on-going are like... three/four? THAT'S why I'm complaining and you can't really blame me. If you look at the maho shojo category you can see the sudden death of it. And also, the vibes of the new ones are just not the same as the ones I listed, so yeah, I'll still complain

There was a golden era of the maho shojo (and of the shojo genre in general) and the fact that after that there hasn't been anything comparable is sad, especially considering how many other genres are still pretty strong even after their golden eras

How can a genre really die if a popular series gets sequels/remakes/reboots, it goes to show that the genre is indeed still popular? It’s like saying that the RPG video game genre is dead even tho Final Fantasy and Pokemon still release new games regularly. The Precure franchise gets a new season each year and it’s having its 20th anniversary this year (even though they celebrated it last year with its 20th season Hirogaru Sky) and Sailor Moon is STILL popular with the Cosmos movie coming out last year.

I understand that there really isn’t a lot of original magical girl anime out right now but even if it’s sequels/remakes it shows that people are still into the genre and it’s not really the “death” of a genre.

Well yes, technology advances and cel animation switches over to digital animation and CG and trends come and go and companies cater to what the newest generation of kids like and are familiar with, there really won’t be anything as cozy as the og Cardcaptor Sakura anime, but I can’t deny that we view these older anime thru nostalgia goggles and we view things that are familiar to us thru nostalgia goggles but that can be a hindrance to seeing what new magical girl anime comes out.

Hell they still come out with new regular shojo anime like The Apothecary Diaries (which was a smash hit on Crunchyroll) Sugar Apple Fairy Tale, Kageki Shojo, Revue Starlight, which is ALSO definitely not a dead genre, it’s STILL going strong!

So no, I definitely do not agree with the statement that the shojo/magical girl genre is dead and I’m sick of seeing the same regurgitated sentiment that supposedly the magical girl genre is “dead” despite there being some new MG anime is out and thriving, just not at the same level as the MG golden age.
