This is something I’ve thought about for a hot minute and i wanted to make an essay on it :))

socioeconomics in slam dunk

  • Like many things in life, basketball is a money sport. While inherent talent and skill is incredibly important, without the resources and opportunities to succeed, you can only get so far.
  • Throughout Slam Dunk, the importance of money and how it has a massive role in the world of basketball is not explicitly stated, but through the depictions of different teams in the series, it is prevalent.
  • We are first introduced to Shohoku High, a public school in Kanagawa. Shohoku is not a “poor” or “ghetto” school, but it is by no means a prestigious school either. Shohoku is initially depicted to be an ordinary school, but we are also shown how it has delinquency and school fights — especially among its protagonist and his “gang”
  • Shohoku’s normalcy is extended into its clubs, in particular, its basketball club. This club isn’t necessarily “run down” or “at risk of not existing anymore”, but aside from its coach (Coach Anzai, a man who used to coach the Japanese national team) and Akagi, their star center, Shohoku’s basketball team doesn’t have much going for it. Due to being a public school, Shohoku doesn’t have the money incentive to recruit star players (like some other schools I will mention soon), and most stars (besides Rukawa LOLLL) won’t go to an ordinary school “on a whim”
  • Moreover, the financial disparities become even more personal through the experiences of the characters themselves.
  • Sakuragi is hinted at to be poor, and the notion that basketball is “pay to play” is first explored through him in volume three, where Hikoichi (a player from Ryonan who “scouts” their competition) points out that it is strange Sakuragi doesn’t have basketball shoes, but he is quick to tell himself that it is likely because Sakuragi can’t afford them. Many basketball shoes, especially the Jordans that Sakuragi obtains throughout the series, are well over the $150-200 USD price range. While it is possible to play without basketball shoes, not having shoes that are designed for basketball automatically puts a player at a slight disadvantage.
  • This brings into question how resources—or the lack thereof—can subtly but significantly influence the trajectory of a player’s journey and a team’s potential for success. Sakuragi was lucky to have gotten practically free basketball shoes due to the generosity of a store owner, but those costs were his own out-of-pocket expenses. Unfortunately, a public school without special stipends for their programs cannot provide financial assistance to provide some of the resources to nurture potentially talented players.
  • While schools like Shohoku do not have funds to incentivize players or potential talent to come their way, they also do not have the funds to incentivize star coaches to coach at these schools. While Shohoku was able to have gotten Anzai (who wanted to retire by coaching highschool basketball), many public schools do not have that same luck.
  • In fact, the reason that two of the starting players, Mitsui and Miyagi, even decided to attend Shohoku was due to its coach, Coach Anzai. I think this goes to show that if a school invests in incentives like star coaches or a star basketball program, then these talented players will want to attend.
  • In terms of schools who provide ALL the incentives, and has thus led to star teams, I want to focus on Kainan, Shoyo, and (especially) Ryonan.
  • All are labelled as prestigious, private schools with amazing basketball programs, with Kainan having a stellar track record at nationals. But why is that? How did they get so.. good?
  • If I had to best answer this, money.
  • Ryonan is known to have scouted its star players, with Coach Taoka even scouting Sendoh and Fukuda from a junior high in Tokyo. For reference, Kanagawa is about two hours away from Tokyo, so Coach Taoka has to provide incentives for these boys to move to a different prefecture rather than staying in a city that likely has many powerhouse schools. In his case, these incentives would likely be full rides to Ryonan, as well as extra stipends to cover these student’s additional costs (such as food, money to move away, etc). Since Ryonan has the funding to do this, Coach Taoka is able to travel around to different areas, find these hidden talents, and bring them over to Ryonan. Public schools like Shohoku, who do not have allocated funds for sports programs, do not have this opportunity… and thus, are at an automatic disadvantage.
  • It is not explicitly stated how prestigious of a school Shoyo is, but having a program-related disadvantage affecting their players is prevalent. They do not have an official coach (for an unmentioned reason), and their star player Fujima has to coach his teammates as a result. Unfortunately, this additional responsibility prevented him from focusing on his own skills. I do believe Shoyo IS a school that has funding, but this highlights how a program being neglected directly impacts the strength of a team.
  • Another team I wanted to point out is Toyotama, a team that faced some of the most immense pressure in the entire series.
  • While Minami and Kishimoto, the team’s leaders, are characterized as “brute assholes”, it is shown that their irrational behavior stems from their pressure to perform well in order to potentially bring back their former coach, Coach Kitano.
  • Although Toyotama is 8th in the country, for the investors in their school’s basketball program, this isn’t enough. And thus… Coach Kitano was fired in the hopes of getting a coach who could lead the team to a better performance.
  • For these prestigious schools, their end goal is making a return on their investments. After all, what is the point of pouring all that money and resources for a team that doesn't even land them in the news?
  • While this is sad, it is very realistic. And as a result... even though Toyotama has a prestigious program, they felt even more pressure to *make a return." and this pressure poured into the team and their behavior.
  • However, the school that truly encapsulates the opportunities that money and resources provide for their players is Sannoh Technical High School.
  • Sannoh is practically a world class basketball team, with "anyone in Japan who gives a damn about basketball knows them", a team that had won nationals for years on end.
  • But how can one team be so good, let alone having a lasting legacy of greatness?
  • While their players are undoubtedly talented, Sannoh has invested aplenty into nurturing their players' talents.
  • Like Coach Taoka of Ryonan, Sannoh’s Coach Damoto scouts the best and brightest for their team. Eji Sawakita, although residing in a different prefecture, was discovered and scouted by Sannoh. While it isn't explicitly said how many players they scouted, or what incentives they provided Sawakita (aside from opportunities and their prestige), it can be inferred that Sannoh likely looks for the best and brighest to be apart of their teams.
  • In addition to the money and resources spent scouting, Sannoh provides their team with immense opportunities that most schools do not.
  • It is stated that Sawakita had been sent on a trip abroad to play basketball in America, and that he even learned new techniques during his trip. To say the least, a trip like that is... expensive. To send students to a country across the world just to play basketball is a hefty price to pay, and yet Sannoh was willing to pay it.
  • To prepare for Shohoku's match, Coach Damoto arranged a practice match with Sannoh alum who have a similar playstyle to Shohoku. While it is possible that these alum were willing to volunteer their time doing this, Damoto going out of his way to bring them all together and schedule that practice match is something that likely cost a significant amount to make happen. And it is certainly an opportunity that many schools would not provide.
  • Unfortunately, it is difficult to compete with money, and this sentiment is universal for any sector.
  • But what makes Shohoku’s victory over all these powerhouse schools, especially Sannoh, so shocking is the fact it is an “ordinary, no name school.” Theoretically, Shohoku would never beat a team like Sannoh, especially given the fact that Shohoku didn’t even have half the money, resources, and opportunities that Sannoh does.
  • Yet… Shohoku did it. And I think this part of why Slam Dunk is such a beautiful story: an ordinary team was, even for a moment, able to be extraordinary.

Slam Dunk shows us what everyone is thinking via background colour

Remember this moment in the Kainan match, right as Sakuragi goes for his epic dunk on Maki? The montage of everyone's reaction is so interesting.

Akagi, Haruko, Takato and Ryota are all telling him to stop/are very alarmed. The colour of their background is black, reflecting that negativity. Takato's the same.

Only two people are depicted differently... it's the two characters with some of the highest basketball IQ we see in the whole of Slam Dunk: Anzai-sensei and Sendoh. Both have white backgrounds, and Sendoh vocalises what must be a shared sentiment: "Go for it."

In that moment, right as our redheaded rookie goes for a dunk against a titan, only two people believed in him and saw what he was capable of, and was cheering him on.

And Inoue showed all this through background colour. This manga is subtle in ways that just deserves multiple re-reads.

Slam Dunk/Inoue tells a story via... sweat

Re-reading Slam Dunk, I realised there's a LOT that Inoue never talks about directly/puts into dialogue but they're definitely things done deliberately to tell us something. eg. In the first minute of the Sannoh match, right when Sakuragi pulls off the alley-oop, there's a montage of everyone's reactions.

Have you noticed the sweating and how it's really different between the teams?

Team Shohoku: every player on the court is sweating a little, indicating the effort they're already throwing into the match. Team Sannoh: not a single sweatdrop to be seen. Which tells us something too: they've not even started their engines. Even 3 minutes into the game, the difference in the amount of sweat between, say, Akagi and Kawata is noticeable. The game is more taxing on Akagi than Kawata.

By the very end of the match, what does it look like?

Everyone - Shohoku and Sannoh alike - is drenched in sweat. Sannoh didn't hold back. Shohoku forced them to give it their all in the end. And Sannoh almost - almost - took the match… if not for that rookie called Sakuragi.

It's little details like these that make this series endlessly entertaining to revisit. <3

One of Inoue’s biggest story telling strengths is that he is able to show his messages without explicitly stating them, and this is yet another example!

What's your characterization of sawakita? I thought he was like a meow meow but when I read the sannoh match I was surprised (pleasantly) by his trash talk lol

I’ve been waiting ALL MY LIFE FOR THIS. THANK YOU. Now i have an excuse to talk on and on about MY GORGEOUS MAN

a character analysis of eiji sawakita

  • When I tried to think of a way to summarize Sawakita’s character, the best thing I could think of was “A typical teenage boy who happens to be really good at the sport he loves.” And I think that this is a really accurate description for him.
  • A strength of Inoue’s character writing is that he never confines his characters to one sole trait or identity. This is especially prevalent in Sendoh and Sawakita’s characterization.
  • Sawakita is… many things. Sawakita is sassy and teasing on the court and towards his teammates, but he is also very sensitive and emotional. I mean he started bawling after getting whopped by Masashi for insulting his face! He makes fun of some of his teammates, but he is also really sweet and encouraging towards them. He knows he’s good looking and that many girls admire him, but he isn’t an ass about it (at least not towards the girls LMFAO)

• (Sawakita encouraging Mikio and Sawakita when he got whopped by Masashi)

• Another thing I found interesting about his character is that Sawakita is in LOVE with basketball, but he doesn’t make it his whole life either and he does slack off from time to time, even skipping a practice if he thinks it’s “too strenuous”. I feel like this is a healthier approach to basketball than Rukawa, who is completely focused on it. I see Sawakita as the type to have hobbies and activities outside of just basketball, and if he is burned out, he will take a break.

• I also think that it’s interesting how Sawakita is “the best highschool basketball player in Japan”, and yet, in both appearance and personality, he isn’t portrayed as overtly masculine? He’s a cry baby, he gets completely beat in fights, and yet he isn’t demeaned for having these qualities. On my first read, I found this surprising, since having a title and reputation like that, you would think Sawakita would feel pressure to act or behave a certain way.

• ALSO ITS SO CUTE AND SWEET HOW MUCH OF A FAMILY ORIENTED GUY HE IS. I mean he was literally drunk on a plane and the first thing he thinks of is “Thank you mom and dad,”

• Overall, I like that Eiji Sawakita is such a multifaceted character. He isn’t entirely nice, but you can’t really hate him either. And for me, he’s part of why Sannoh was such a well written team

Here’s some song playlists that i thinl the characters would either listen to or songs that jus remind me of them :). Most of these are based off my own music taste lol

Part 2 maybe????? Depending on which characters u guys would want

OK HERE IS THE PART 2!!!!!

slam dunk boys at the gym pt 2

akagi

  • If Akagi feels that his basketball practices weren’t strenuous enough that day, he WILL go to the gym right after. And depending on his mood, he’ll drag the rest of the team with him 😂
  • The boys would hate going with him because of how serious he is about his workouts. Like if you’re going with him, there’ll be NO fooling around. If he takes the team with him, he’d make each of the workouts into a competition. Like increasing the machine weight by 5 lb increments and see who can go for the longest 😂
  • On his own, I’d say he’d only do a couple machines/workouts per session. But he’d be VERYYY intense about them. Like he’d keep building the weight up and do a shitton of sets. Each day he’d be working on specific regions/muscles and he’d make sure to target only those
  • HARUKO WOULD DEF TAG ALONG WITH HIM AND HE’D TEACH HER NEW WORKOUTS AND GIVE HER TIPS
  • The gym bros would think he’s so cool. They’d ask about his workout routine, what his diet is, if he takes any protein supplements. Theyd be so jealous of how tall and bulky he is omfg

sendoh

  • I don’t see Sendoh going to the gym often. I think he’d go if he doesn’t have practice one day and the weather isn’t nice enough to go fishing or walking.
  • But when he does go the gym… ITD BE CRAZY. Unlike Rukawa, Sendoh is more approachable and he wouldn’t be very intense at the gym. So more girls would approach him!!!! He would be polite and give them his number but then over text, let them know he isn’t interested. He would NOT wanna humiliate any of the gym baddies in the moment
  • His workouts would depend on whatever he’s in the mood for thst day, I don’t think he’d have any set routine.
  • If he sees someone having a hard time with a specific machine or their workout form is off, he’d go up to them and be like “Hey, can I give you a few pointers?” He wouldn’t want to be annoying about tryna correct them, but legit just to help them out
  • He’d laugh to himself at any of the gym crackheads 💀💀💀
  • If there’s something extra at the gym, like a swimming pool or track field, he will do those leisure activities. He’s moreso at the gym to destress and enjoy himself than body building

sawakita

  • He’d go to the gym super often, mainly with his teammates (especially Fukatsu and Masashi). If he has a game coming up (or jus doesnt want to go home yet OR HES BORED), they’ll all go together.
  • I like to think that their school funded those boys a gym membership to a really nice gym, with extra things like a basketball court, track, and maybe a pool. AND THEYD TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT. Like this boy will have fun!!!!
  • Sawakita wouldn’t be super serious about weightlifting/his other workouts… but Masashi would try making it a competition as to who can lift the most/do the most sets. AND SAWAKITA AINT TRYNA LOSE
  • He’d be like Akagi in the sense of doing specific workouts for specific days. He’d def push himself but also take breaks and to not overdo things. He’d be scared about pulling a muscle or being too exhausted the next day
  • He would have SOOOO many admirers at the gym. Like this guy will have girls practically breaking their necks jus to look at him. But nobody would approach him because he’s surrounded with his scary and intimidating looking friends (mainly Masashi)
  • I think he’d go alone a decent amount too. Especially if he was feeling sad about something and wasn’t ready to talk to it about it to his parents/friends. Or if he was jus socially drained that day and wanted alone time
  • Now when he does go alone…. It’s a total switch up 😂. This boy got girls approaching him, asking him for help on their workout, EVERYTHING. He’d be so smug about it to Masashi too, like “The one day I go without you is the day all the ladies talk to me. What a coincidence,” (and then get his ass beat LMFAOOO)
Avatar

Considering the fact they’re basketball players who have to condition (even on the off-season), I thought this would be fun to think about :). And also i go to the gym and i see boys like them all the time there

slam dunk boys at the gym

rukawa

• One thing about Rukawa, he is going to the gym ALONE. Like it’ll literally be him, his airpods, a towel, and a fat waterbottle against the world. I don’t think he’d hate working out with someone, but he’d prefer to workout alone since he can stay focused and go at his own pace.

• He’d have both his AirPods in at full volume and go CRAZY on the machines/weightlifting bars. I think for his stamina, he would use the Stairmaster at full speed and go on it for as long as he could.

• I’d say that he does workouts for all of his body, but his favorite workouts would be arm ones, just because he’ll be able to put more power into his basketball shots.

• I don’t think he’d be approached by anyone at the gym since he’s always super focused on his workout and looks VERY intimidating, but if you went up to him and asked him for help, he’d do it.

• BUTTTT If he was in a bad mood that day, he might just put his AirPod right back in and ignore you 😂. However, after he cools off, he’d feel kinda bad. And then sigh and go up to you like “What did you need help with?”

• HE’D DEF BE ADMIRED BY ALL THE GYM BADDIES!!!!!

ryota

• Ok I feel like his level of productivity would depend on who he’s at the gym with. If he’s with Mitsui, those two are gonna try and compete with who could lift heavier weights 😂. But if he’s with Sakuragi, aint NOTHING getting done.

• He will take a ton of gym photos and mirror selfies and post them like “Hitting the gym today ✅” on Insta/Snap. AND HE’LL SEND THEM ALL TO AYAKO 😂😂😂. His gym fits will be coordinated asf too!!! He will go over there dripped out!!!

• I think if he goes alone he’d be really focused. He wouldn’t look intimidating or anything but he’d keep to himself and put on some music (def rnb like bryson tiller or brent faiyaz) and do his workouts. If the gym had a track area, he’d walk around and jus think about life and whatever happened throughout his day.

• Now if Ayako tagged along with him to the gym one day… HES GONNA ACT A FOOL. Like he will literally just stand by her the entire time as if he’s her mf bodyguard. And if a man even TRIED to talk to her, he would instantly shoo him away 💀

sakuragi

• His productivity would also depend on who hes with 😂

• If he’s with his lil gang… they getting into BIG trouble. Those idiots would fool around and try and swing around the weightlifting bar and hit eachother with it. They’d cause a big commotion and then get escorted out the gym by mf security.

• I think he’d go alone alot lowkey… especially after rehabilitation, he’d go there to do light workouts to prepare himself for basketball practice.

• I f he doesn’t know how to properly use a machine, this mf is NOT ASKING NOBODYYY for help 💀. Like he will stand there and stubbornly try messing with it until either he figures it out, or one of the gym’s staff sees him and offers him help

• I feel like he’d be very popular with the elderly people at the gym. Like in the mens’ locker room, the old men would look at him and be like “Back in my day, I was a lot like you, son,” and be hyping him up on his muscles and big build. AND HE’D ACT ALL OVERCONFIDENT but he’d lowkey be smiling about it for the rest of the day. He’d smile and make a peace sign whenever he sees one of the elderly regulars there. And if they asked him for help, he’d help!!!!! He’d have a whole community of uncles and aunties at the gym

• In terms of people around his age tho.. it’s a different story. If someone is using a machine or area he’s trying to use, he’s gonna be SOOO inpatient. Especially if whoever is on it isn’t using it. If it’s a girl, he’d ask politely, but if it’s a guy, he’ll mean mug tf outta them, until they get intimidated and walk away 😭

• If he and Ryota are at the gym together, those two will take SO many pictures. Half of the time they’d jus be talking and talking, and wouldn’t get ANYTHING accomplished

mitsui

• Ok, one thing about Mitsui, he is NOT going to the gym alone. Like he will hit the whole mf team up and ask them to go with him. Even Akagi.

• I think he’d go frequently though, especially in order to build up his stamina. Rukawa would show him the Stairmaster machine and he’d go CRAZY on there. Like by the end, it’ll say he walked up 200 flights of stairs 😂

• He’d lowkey have so many gym crushes. But he wouldn’t approach ANY of them 😂😂😂. He will just admire, sigh, and then go on with his workout. I think some of the gym baddies would think he’s cute but they wouldn’t approach him

• The reason why he’d be scared of being alone at the gym is because it’d be jus him and his thoughts. AND FOR MITSUI, THATS SCARY ASL. However… I think going to the gym alone from time to time would end up being a way for him to destress and reflect.

PS: IMMA DO A PART TWO WITH AKAGI, SENDOH, SAWAKITA, and whoever else yall want

Halloooo!

I saw the ask box was open and decided to give it a try. Believe it or not, i'm actually new to tumblr and made an account just recently, and you're the first blog that i've gathered up the courage to send an ask/request to hehe^^

*ahem ahem*

anyhow, regarding the ask,

can you do some big/older brother Sendoh hcs.

I recently just rewatched slamdunk for like the 5th time and for some reason he's become like an older brother comfort character to me hehe:D

Also,

I really like your blog and i hope you have a great day*^^.

First of all — UR SO SWEET. Thank you so much 😁

sendoh as an older brother

  • I feel like if you’re even distantly related to Sendoh, YOURE GONNA BE COMPARED TO HIM ALL THE TIME. Like all the mf aunties will be saying “Akira is such a sweet boy! You should be like him” and it’ll be so tiring, especially if he’s your sibling
  • He’s literally your #1 wingman. If you’re tryna sneak out late at night, all you have to do is tell him and he will COVER. If there’s someone at his school you like, he’ll tell you everything he knows about the guy/girl.
  • If it’s a big age gap between yall, he’ll treat you RIGHT. Like he’d walk you to school, walk you to all your activities, EVERYTHING.
  • He’ll take all your Instagram photos for you!!!! Especially if it’s by the water, he will put in the work
  • I think he’d play basketball with his siblings for fun. But he’d go easy on them and let them win, and let them get an ego from it. But if you say he sucks at it, he will get PETTY and then go all out.
  • He’d def buy you what you want if you ask him!!! Like if you ask him money for food, he’ll give you way more than what you initially asked for

Anonymous asked:

can you do more kiyota headcanons

He’s literally one of my favs and I’ve been meaning to do something for him

random kiyota hcs

• One thing about Kiyota; he is gonna be FUN to be around. I think regardless of if you’re a friend, his love interest, acquaintance, or even just an acquaintance, you’d get sucked in by him.

• In terms of academics.. that boy definitely got into Kainan on a sports scholarship 😂. Although I’d say he’s a better student than Sakuragi, I do not think he’s a good student.

• He’d lowkey be the type to ask to go to the bathroom during class and then wander around the halls for like 15 minutes. If he saw anyone he knew also in the halls, he’d walk around with them.

• I feel like he’s the type to have a large friendgroup? But he’d only have like 3-5 fr close friends. If you’re a close friend though, HE’D DEF VALUE IT. Yall would be hanging out 24/7, he’d be a great texter, EVERYTHING. Kiyota is the type of dude that communicates his feelings very well, so there’d be no drama or misunderstandings

• If he saw a pretty girl, I feel like he’d tell everyone BUT the girl. Like mf would be going around to Jin talking some “Bro the girl in my class is so pretty”, but if he got told to just talk to her, he’d make a ton of dumb excuses. HOWEVER he would have the courage to eventually approach her and try to impress her.

• He’d think he’s amazing with the ladies… but not really 💀. I think he is really funny but he would overdo it with a girl since he’s desperate to make her laugh. And it may end up just bothering her.

• But he’d really make an effort for any girl he liked!!! Handwritten letters, candlelit dinners that he made himself, and he’d never stop complimenting you. I feel like he’s a romantic person at heart and he’d want a hs girlfriend

• As messy and chaotic as he is, lowkey he’d be great at cooking. Although he’d leave the kitchen and sink a MESS, whatever he makes is gonna be GOOD! He’d be the type to share food he made with his friends at lunch (reluctantly)

THIS IS SOMETHING I TALKED TO MY FRIEND ABPIT OMCE AND I THOUGHT ITD BE FUNNY TO POST

slam dunk boys on tiktok

Mitsui

  • Mitsui would lowkey be the mf that posts cringy dancing videos/trends to make himself go viral. BUT IT WOULDNT WORK 😂😂😂😂
  • And he’d be annoyed asl about that. I feel like he’d be the type to chase clout on social media and he’d be FIENDING for those likes and followers.
  • I FEEL LIKE HE’D BE A LIL THIRSTY ON TIKTOK — like he wouldn’t be up in girls’ tiktok comments but he would def like and repost any girl he thinks is pretty. AND IF HE WAS FEELING BRAVE, he would find and add the girl’s IG.
  • His for you page would be a mix of pretty girls, NBA basketball player edits, and like sped up music. He’d be making edits of his own basketball highlights with capcut and posting them 😂
  • He’d spam videos to Ryota and Sakuragi, especially basketball edits.

Miyagi

  • Ngl he’d be the only one on the team to fr have clout 😂😂😂
  • He would post both thirst traps AND photos/videos of ayako. He’d love to post her to the cute TikTok trends (like this). Ayako would jus like the post and not say ANYTHING
  • One thing about Miyagi is that he dresses GOOD, and he’s gonna show that off! He’d post outfit of the day videos and he’d gatekeep tf out of his clothes. Like he’d straight up ignore any comments asking him where he got his clothes from 💀
  • He seems like the type to not respond to ANY TikToks he’s sent. Like Sakuragi would SPAM videos and Ryota isnt even opening any of them
  • If Ayako sends him things on TikTok tho.. OPENED IN LESS THAN A SECOND. He’d have his notifications turned on too so whenever she posts, he is all up in her comments. He’d reply to any other guy in her comments talking some “She’s mine lil bro”

Rukawa

  • I don’t think Rukawa would be very into social media, but if there’s one social that he has, it’d be TikTok
  • He’d probably have a completely empty acc with like no pfp, 6 followers, and no posts. He would NOT care about being famous on there, although if he even jus posted a video of himself, he’d instantly go viral.
  • His fyp would be cats, music recommendations, english lessons, and basketball. That boy has NO interest in anything else on there. And he thinks that the other guys’ videos are corny, especially if he saw Ryota’s thirst traps 💀.
  • But if he EVERRR made a guest appearance on the guys’ videos, he would instantly blow up. Like all the comments would be asking him who he is, what his @ is, and why he’s so mf fine. He’d make his acc private after that 😂
  • I like to think that his fan girls would try to find his TikTok and stalk his reposts to see what kind of guy Rukawa is, and what he likes

Sawakita

  • HE’D DEF BE FAMOUS ON TIKTOK, maybe even more followers than Miyagi.
  • I think he’d initially blow up bc him and his teammates would do the dance trends for fun during practice, but all the girls would comment things like “That guy in the middle is so fine 😍” or “He’s the only fine one 😭😭”. AND HE’D BE USING IT AS A WAY TO DISS ON THEM, like “None of those girls even want you” 😂 (then he gets his ass whopped)
  • Ok I don’t think he’s the type to be thirsty but from time to time, he’d def like and repost a pretty girl on his fyp AND HIS FAN GIRLS WOULD NOTICE IT AND GO CRAZY.
  • He’d def post highlights from his games over famous tiktok sounds (LIKE THE “I done did the impossible” one) and he’d have girls from diff schools start showing up to his games after finding him off TikTok
  • I feel like he’d jus post on Tiktok for fun? Like he’d post a little bit of everything; basketball, him lipsyncing songs, dance videos with his friends, and even TikTok lives. He wouldn’t really care about being famous on TikTok so he’d jus post whatever makes him feel good yk?
  • I like to think that he follows the Shohoku boys (even Rukawa somehow) and from time to time, he comments on their posts with “🔥🔥🔥”

slam dunk characters + hygiene

Miyagi

  • Tbh I think Ryota is REALLY clean. That boy does not want to smell bad in front of his girl Ayako.
  • He definitely takes like 1-2 showers each day. Bro would have EXPENSIVE shampoos and conditioners to make sure his hair was looking good. Also LOTSSSS of curl cream, he’d have some in his backpack and everything in case his hair got frizzy during school.
  • I feel like he’d be the type to have a perfume collection. I doubt hes rich or anything but BEST BELIEVE that boy is going to have Dior Sauvage, Tom Ford, and Chanel perfume.
  • He’d def be the type to do alot of nail care, like filing them and making sure his nailbeds are clean.
  • HIM AND AYAKO WOULD DEFFFF GO TO BEAUTY SALONS TOGETHER

Sendoh

• Whenever I think of the term business casual, THIS MF COMES TO MIND.

• Unlike Ryota, Sendoh isn’t necessarily obsessed with looking good, but I think he puts effort into being clean and presentable. I mean, who else is wearing a mf button up shirt while fishing?!?!

• If there is a type of self-care he’s into though, it’s DEFINITELY haircare. He wouldn’t have expensive asl haircare products like Ryota, but he got CANS AND CANS of hairgel, and he’d wake up early to perfect his hair.

• He’d probably have a fresh smell?? Like he wouldn’t smell musty or sweaty but he also wouldn’t be spraying perfume or cologne all over himself. After games he’d be QUICK to shower, from both wanting to not feel sweaty, and not wanting to smell bad.

• I feel like his hands probably get really dirty and grimy from fishing, but at the end of a fishing session, he gives his hands a DEEP cleanse. I just know his nails are clean asl!

Ayako

Image

• We all know this girl KNOWS how to take care of her. She probably has even more hair products than Ryota, and she keeps them on HAND. Definitely gets routine haircuts too, I HC that her and Ryota go to the same stylist 😜

• I think that, although Ayako is very pretty, she isn’t necessarily worried about her appearance, and her hygiene is good but it’s to make herself feel good. Like she doesn’t want to smell good because she’s worried about attracting others, but because she wants to feel comfortable yk?

hi. first of all I really enjoy your content. I just want to confess that I started watch SD around May, just because of KBL influence and i want to enjoy my food while watching something entertaining. Honestly, IM HOOK with it.i already finished the anime and the manga. im planning to watch the movie but unfortunately it's not premiered anymore. so, any website suggestion beside reddit to indulge in SD? i want to feed my desire for more SD content and analysis! TQVM

Hi anon, the places I’d recommend for seeing soam dunk content is tumblr, twitter, and instagram. Instagram has alot of nice fanart, twitter and tumblr do too. On twitter/tumblr you’ll see alot of analysis too. Archive of our own has alot of slam dunk stories also

Hello!! Do you have an idea why Inoue wasn't happy with the anime and didn't want it to continue? I haven't read the first part of the manga so I'm unsure.

Actually this is something i researched. This answer isnt 100% confirmed but its very likely this is what happened

why the slam dunk anime got cancelled

  • Okay so, let me first note that the SD anime was VERY popular during its run. It had high ratings in Japan and even neighboring countries such as the Philippines. I don’t remember the exact viewership, but it was way too high for it to have ended due to poor ratings
  • The main issue was conflict between Inoue and the directors/producers of the anime. Now, since the SD anime was popular, they wanted it to keep going. When they heard Inoue wanted it to end after Sannoh, mfs weren’t happy 💀
  • So they wanted to adjust the anime so that it had a different ending from the manga. I think they planned on having the anime ending be Shohoku winning nationals. That way, the anime could go on longer and milk out all the money from it. Inoue wasn’t happy with that AT ALL
  • As a result, he cut the production on it altogether. I think Inoue really cares about the adaptations being faithful to his vision instead of them tryna change things
  • While I do think it was a lil extreme to do that, the anime ending they had in mind just seems bogus 💀. So I think it wad better to scrap it
