David Bowie Was Even More of a Genius Than I Ever Realized

As legendary photographer Mick Rock once said, "I do not use the word ‘genius’ lightly. But if David Bowie is not a genius, then there is no such thing."

Halfway through 2023, I began looking for a comprehensive list of all the music genres and subgenres David Bowie composed in, but I couldn't find one, so I used ChatGPT-4 and ChatGPT 4o to research and compile my own. By my count, which has also been generously assisted and contributed to by Tumblr's brookbee, Bowie spanned at least an astounding 71 music genres/subgenres + 11 additional influences/elements that he incorporated into select compositions and covers. https://bit.ly/David_Bowie_71_GenresSubgenres…

AND, Bowie composed in approximately *55* of these genres/subgenres before the age of 31!

I don't claim to be an expert on this subject however, and some people may disagree with some of the genres/subgenres credited to Bowie.

I’d like to take a moment though to applaud Bowie’s vast genius. I wonder if being fluent in 82 musical languages is an unmatched achievement in the history of music.

See the bit ly link above for additional details, including the citing of songs that exemplify the genres/subgenres listed below.

These are the 11 genre/subgenre influences/elements that Bowie incorporated into select compositions. brookbee here kindly shared her initial list of 8, then I added the Glossolalic vocal style, Punk rock, and Ska to the list. Italics = Elements/influences Bowie incorporated prior to the age of 30:

1. Cabaret (elements/influence) "Time" & "Alabama Song"

2. Chanson (elements/influence): "When I Live My Dream" & "Shadow Man"

3. Glossolalic vocal style (elements/minor influence): "Warszawa" & "Subterraneans"

4. Gospel (elements/influence): "Underground" & "I Know It’s Gonna Happen Someday"

5. House (elements/influence): "Pallas Athena"

6. Latin (elements/influence): "I Keep Forgetting"

7. Punk rock (elements/influence): "Hammerhead", other Tin Machine songs, "Teenage Wildlife", "It’s No Game (Pt. 1)"

8. Rap (elements/minor influence): "Shining Star (Making My Love)" 9. Reggae (elements/influence): "Miracle Goodnight", "Chilly Down": "Red Sails": Reggae and ska influences. "Don’t Look Down" & "Tonight"

10. Sophisti-pop (elements/influence): "Modern Love" & "Absolute Beginners"
