Pro Palestine UAL students protest at the Central Saint Martins BA Fashion Show 2024

"Protesters lined the balconies on the floors above the atrium where the show took place, dropping a huge patchwork banner directly above the catwalk. Across it, messages including ‘Stop Genocide, Free Palestine’, ‘Ceasefire Now’, and ‘Money for jobs and education NOT for war and occupation’ had been stitched, alongside the Palestinian flag and watermelons.

Throughout the show, the students shouted ‘Free Palestine’, while calling for boycotts of L’Oreal, which sponsors the CSM BA show annually and supports three winning designers with funds as the graduate from the school. L’Oreal is currently listed on the BDS boycott list. Later, they dropped messages calling for UAL to ‘Divest our money from banks and businesses funding Israel’ and highlighting that there were ‘No universities left in Gaza’"

Being antisemitic isn’t going to help combat Islamophobia.

Being Islamophobic isn’t going to help combat antisemitism.

Being one flavor of a bigot isn’t going to help combat another flavor of bigotry.

More specifically, when trans mascs depict ourselves as hapless victims of our supposedly gentle and unthreatening “female socialization,” we cast trans women as stronger and more threatening and more aggressive than they really are — we masculinize them, in order to feminize ourselves, with the very clear implication being that we are women and they are men and they are therefore Doing Sexism. We do this even though, in the very next breath, we will go back to declaring ourselves Not Women and saying that negative stereotypes of masculinity are offensive and harmful to us. It’s having your cake and eating it too. It’s being oppressed only when it suits you, and only in the way that confers immediate advantage. It — quite rightfully — seems to drive a lot of trans women up the fucking wall, and it is probably why trans men talking about their experiences of misogyny or coercive femininity are treated with distrust.

Poet Taylor Steele captures the problem with appropriating Black slang.

In her poem “AAVE” (which stands for African-American Vernacular English) Taylor Steele explains why appropriation of Black slang is the worst.  African-American culture is being popularized on a daily basis and while Black people are judged and mistreated for using something they came up with ages ago, White people come off as cool and original when they use it.

*Same people who ignored Nazis marching on their campus and assaulting students including Jewish antifascists only a few years back* I’m so afraid of unarmed students occupying buildings it’s giving me a panic attack. Nothing this antisemitic has EVER happened on this campus before. I’m gonna die omg please save me from antisemitism JDL and local police by beating these Jewish and Arab students on camera. That’s what would make me feel truly safe as a Jew, to see some Jewish commie skulls cracked on the evening news.

Like I look at tweets like this and wonder who they're for. Especially if you're part of the party that insistently paints itself as the progressive alternative to what the right is doing.

You can't portray yourself that way, attract people with such mindsets, and then get mad when they ask you to be consistent.

These people are either moderates who call themselves otherwise because of the two party system or they're fake. You better hope it's the latter if you actually want this country to progress.

Being like the party you despise in such a way? Not a good look.

Rashida Tlaib was born in the US by the way. To be okay with deporting anyone, let alone a citizen because they disagree with you? Insane behavior.

Liberal fascism in a nutshell. “If you don’t agree with and vote like me, I want you to face harsh oppression/death.” Sick.

Liberal and conservative fascism are two sides of a fucked up coin.

Conservatives will deny such oppression exists while perpetuating it.

Liberals are aware of such oppression and will weaponize it if you do not conform to their desires exactly.

It really is sick.

i think a lot of the socio-political and historical analysis of why people might compare zionists to the nazis, whether in terms of authoritarianism and far-right regimes and in the relevant context of history, as well as the accusation that it is inappropriate or antisemitic, both miss a significant aspect of the comparison in and of itself

when arabs or palestinians compare zionists to nazis, gaza to the holocaust, it's also because they're aware that israelis and the western world at least grasp the horrors of the holocaust. they're aware that this was universally understood as an atrocity, and so they are trying to make this appeal because they think this is one of the few comparisons that the western mind can comprehend in the first place.

in arabic i have heard zionists compared to the mongols and tatars, to the crusaders, to the colonial british, to the american settlers and later to the americans in iraq. does any of that mean anything to the western perspective? they've never acknowledged the full depth of these atrocities in the first place. the nazis are one of many comparisons that have been drawn in the arab world, usually used for irony. but people are aware that the rest mean nothing to the ones responsible for arming and empowering israel.

instead there is a sense (however true or untrue—and it is mostly untrue) that the west understood the visceral horror of the holocaust and a sense that those responsible for it were held accountable in ways few others have due to that. and so this comparison, on a human level, is often made just to communicate in the first place. it's basically saying "i'm trying to speak your language, you are the monster to me that this monster was to you, do you understand me now?"

Something we do in Palestinian circles especially is compare the current nakba with the '48 one and '67 one. But even when we try to make this comparison now, in English and with people who do not understand the gravity of the nakba on generations of family, no one bats an eye. In fact, people go as to deny the nakba in whatever way they think makes sense.

If we were to compare in standard media, the current nakba with the others, then no one would care. Weve accepted that mainstream opinion is that no one cares about Palestinians. I'm talking mainstream political and professional media.

When Palestinians especially point out that the euro-american backed Israel is perpetuating the same violence it swore to never perpetuate again, it's a pleading to save their lives. They are not doing it out of malice or anything. They are literally trying to find any way possible to get people to do something so that the slaughter of their friends and family stops. Perhaps people should be more willing to understand that this is a population who has been consistently disenfranchised, blamed for their occupation, and repeatedly kicked out of their homes and made refugees which ruined lives. And no one has done anything about it. So they're trying to appeal to your (a westerner) sense of morality that they know you teach in your history books.

Perhaps don't be so quick to judge Palestinians for trying to find ways to make you help them?

can we talk about how being so pants-shittingly terrified of Doing A Racism you freeze up or Get Weird around anyone a shade darker than the sugar in your cupboard or with an accent is effectively the same as being scared of brown people and doesn't make you much better than Sandra Lilly Smith from the suburbs who clings her purse when a black guy gets on the elevator with her

It also, generally, makes you much less safe to actually confront when you do inevitably fuck up and do some kind of racism, such as being scared of being around PoC for the above reasons. Because you're so wound up and tense that it becomes this Big Catastrophic Failure and your Worst Fears Realized, which immediately takes the conversation away from the racism and instead collapses it around your feelings as the offender.

This is an example of an intersection of white fragility with white guilt, both of which are ways in which white people deflect the responsibility of examining their own racist biases or actions by weaponizing their feelings to keep the conversation about them and their feelings, either by getting defensive about accusations of racism or imploding with self-flagellation and guilt for being Such A Terrible Person.

The thing about being raised white in the US, europe, and canada, is that the society you grew up in will inevitably instill subconscious racist biases in you, directly or indirectly. Even the most leftist white spaces are rife with racist tendencies, many of which stem from absences, rather than overt presence of denegrating opinions of PoC. Like ignorance to the breadth and nature of the struggles of BIPoC, the nuances of systemic racism, where assumptions of equal opportunity and saftey in a given scenario break down.

If you want to actually be an effective anti-racist, it needs to be easy and safe to tell you "hey, that was racist" without you imploding, exploding, getting defensive, or centering your guilt. Don't make it a bigger deal than the person approaching you has made it, keep the apology short and sweet, and keep the load off of whoever aproached you to correct your error; that is your responsibility to fix and your responsibility to manage your emotions about, not the victim of your racist behavior.

Like all things in life, you need to be willing to make a little bit of an ass of yourself if you want to get better. You need to get comfortable being wrong, being the bad guy. Because sooner or later, you will be, and you can't let it be the end of the world. Because it never is, but treating it like one forces everyone else to save you from whatever personal apocalypse you've spun up over it. And when you've fucked up or hurt someone, it is always the wrong time to make yourself need rescue first.

You can come back from a faux pas, even a Racist one. You just need to chill the fuck out and listen.

[...] The CBC would spend the following months whitewashing the horrors that Israel would visit on Palestinians in Gaza. In the days after Israel began its bombing campaign, this was already evident: while virtually no scrutiny was applied to Israeli officials and experts, an unprecedented level of suspicion was being brought to bear on the family members of those trapped in Gaza. [...]
Besides, I naively told myself, it would be easier for me to dissent than most of my colleagues. I am of mixed Jewish heritage, having been raised by a father who fled the Holocaust as a young child and dealt with the life-long trauma and guilt of surviving while his family members were murdered by the Nazis. It would be more challenging, I believed, for cynical actors to wield false accusations of antisemitism against me.
I turned out to be wrong. [...]
After October 7, I dreaded going into work: every shift, the impact of the biases went into overdrive. Even at this early stage, Israeli officials were making genocidal statements that were ignored in our coverage. On October 9, Defence Minister Yoav Gallant said, “I have ordered a complete siege on the Gaza Strip. There will be no electricity, no food, no fuel; everything is closed. We are fighting human animals and we act accordingly.” Even after this comment, my executive producer was still quibbling over uses in our scripts of the word “besieged” or references to the “plight of Palestinians.”[...]

tumblr user with an encyclopedic knowledge of homestuck blames the fact that they dont know where Venezuela is because of the American public school system

tumblr user who jokes about how they love reading random wikipedia articles for fun suddenly incapable of googling "where is nigeria located"

if you're tagging this as #me i urge you to develop a sense of shame immediately

stop blaming this on your adhd and/or autism oh my god

the people who are proud of their wilful ignorance and the people making excuses are ridiculous and infuriating

but also, looking at notes it seems like there are a lot of people missing the point and being like "I know where Venezuela and Nigeria are! therefore this does not apply to me!" as though not knowing those two places is the entire problem and not an example of a larger issue

like. this isn't just about not knowing where Venezuela and Nigeria are (although that is absolutely a problem)

it's about not caring about anything outside your white western bubble, not thinking it's worth your time to learn basic facts about other countries and cultures, and caring more about fandom than you care about people of colour/people in countries that aren't your own

I don't think white people realize how recently interracial marriage was not allowed, and how long prejudice against it continued (or continues)

canada has never specifically had legal bans on interracial marriage, but the KKK would proselytize against interracial marriage:

Unlike the United States, Canada had no blatant laws banning interracial marriage. But while the stigma was more informal in this country, it could be just as terrifying. As Backhouse describes in her 1999 book, Colour-Coded: A Legal History of Racism in Canada, 1900-1950, much of this terror was at the hands of the Ku Klux Klan. In 1927, Klansmen congregated in Moose Jaw, where they burned a 60-foot cross and lectured a large crowd on the risks of mixed-race marriage.

They would also kidnap people to prevent said marriages:

Three years later, on Feb. 28, 1930, some 75 Ku Klux Klan men dressed in white hoods and gowns marched into Oakville, Ont., and burned another massive wooden cross. They had arrived to intimidate Isabel Jones, a white woman, and her fiancé, Ira Junius Johnson, a man presumed to be black but later found to be of mixed Cherokee and white descent. The woman's mother had summoned the KKK to separate them.
The Klansmen kidnapped Jones, 21, and dumped her off at the Salvation Army, where they would keep surveillance on her for days from a car parked outside. In front of the couple's home, they burned a cross and threatened Johnson. During the invasion, the police chief recognized many of the Klansmen as prominent business owners from Hamilton as they plucked off their hoods to shake his hand.

This continued into the late 30s and the 40s, and often involved law enforcement:

Four months pregnant and eating breakfast with her fiancé in their pyjamas at their Toronto home, 18-year-old Velma Demerson was confronted by her father and two police officers. Demerson's father had sicced the cops on his daughter for what was scandalous behaviour at the time: Demerson, a white, unmarried woman, was living with a Chinese man, Harry Yip, and was carrying his child. Under the Female Refuges Act, Demerson was deemed "incorrigible and unmanageable" and incarcerated for nine months at Toronto's Andrew Mercer Reformatory for Women, where she was locked in a seven-foot-by-four-foot cell.

This was all within my grandparents' lifetimes. And the harassment and KKK and police involvement continued well into the 60s and 70s.

And there was the extremely confusing system of whether or not Indigenous people lost their "Indian status" based on who they married, which was all based on gender and blood quantums. This was under the Indian act, and you can read about the marriage discrimination in it here.

And it never really ended, not socially.

My parents got together as an interracial couple in the 80s. My mom's aunt (that's the white side of the family) refused to attend their wedding. In the 90s they got pulled over by a cop who asked if my dad was keeping my mom in his car against her will.

Just a few months ago a white woman refused to believe that my mom is my mom, because that would mean my mom fucked a brown person and that couldn't be right! My mom is so pretty, surely she didn't have to settle for a brown immigrant!

I know this post is long but I think that you should read this. I see people crack jokes about interracial marriage a lot, but I doubt many Canadians know its history on this land.

kinda feels like we're dealing with the major ramifications of feminism being digested via enamel pins and tshirts with fun 70s throwback vibes and not as a serious critical framework to reshape our society

the point of this post wasn’t to mock individual people as cringe or stupid for buying pins on etsy, my point was feminism as a movement was astroturfed by capital interests to be an aesthetic and personal identity without a revolutionary character.
