Common Cuckoo (Cuculus canorus) »by Kee Liu

I’m seeing some confusion about this one in the reblogs, and it is for my money one of the most interesting things to know about birds, so:

The big guy in this picture is the cuckoo - a young cuckoo.  The little one is the momma bird, who is feeding the baby, even though the baby is now like five times as big as she is.  That’s because the cuckoo is a brood parasite.

Cuckoos lay their eggs in the nests of other birds.  If the hosts notice the cuckoo egg, they will try to get rid of it - if they don’t, though, and the cuckoo chick hatches, they will raise it as their own, even though the first thing it does when it hatches is to murder all of their other children.

The question with this is always: why, at that point, do the host birds raise the cuckoo chick?   It’s way too hungry, it’s way too aggressive, it hangs around way longer than a normal chick would, and it’s huge, for god’s sake.   It’s obviously not theirs. There are a couple of theories. One is that the begging call a baby cuckoo makes sounds like an entire nest of normal chicks, and the parents are programmed to feed whatever makes that noise.   I got some doubts about behavior models that are that deterministic, though.  I like to think it’s some avian variation on the sunk cost fallacy - the parents put all these resources into making this nest and laying this clutch, and by god they’re going to get a baby out of it, even if it’s a giant monster baby.

There is absolutely zero science behind this but my impression has always been that the parasitized parents, upon raising a gargantuan monster child, are basically just thrilled to pieces, like, “fuck yeah my huge Gundam kid can beat up your honor student” and “gaze upon my feathered monster truck pride and joy and despair”.

Better yet, she got in contact with a local wildlife reserve! She found him and his sister beside a dead animal on the side of the road, apparently quite thin, and assumed they were just abandoned kittens. The female passed shortly afterward but the male was fine- two months later she brought him to the vet and discovered "hey, thats a whole ass jungle cat." There's a good chance Tito will be back in the wild someday, even! IMHO, two kittens on the side of the road, and one didn't make it more than a couple days? they probably WERE abandoned. just dumb luck they got picked up!

LISTEN to those sweet cheeps. to me I hear that sound and immediately think wild cat, but I think its totally reasonable for a teenager to find a kitten this young and think it was a normal cat. Jaguarundi are also really small!

I know the forfeiter, unfortunately she's from my fencing club. Everyone at our club agrees she did this purely for the spectacle, in a sport that's heavily steeped in sportsmanship and respect.

If she's ejected from the club (she might have been already, the club understandably probably won't issue a public statement) it'll be because she broke the rules in a direct, intention, and disgustingly public way. At tournaments, they don't just kick people out, she almost definitely was warned and told to go and fence, then refused again. The rules are unambiguous and everyone knows you can't refuse to fence. And thankfully USA Fencing already decided to officially allow trans athletes.

But she'll claim any repercussion she faces is for her politics, she'll describe herself as a victim and keep raking in conservative money. It's shitty, she's shitty, but thankfully most of the fencing community agrees on the absurdity of her claims. She regularly fenced in coed events, and it's ironic because the tournament allows grown adults to fence 14 year olds but she decided that including a trans woman was unfair. It's bigotry and looks idiotic, but she'll benefit because conservatives are deciding to be "woke" snowflakes about trans people

To be clear: this bill has gotten held for study. This means there will be research and outreach, including public comment, on this bill. It is a deliberate tactic to get more eyes on it, and more time for people to call in and say, "Yes this bill is bad and will hurt people."
