honestly sometimes stories where characters have self awareness and solve their problems maturely can be really refreshing sometimes. and sometimes it feels like therapyspeak slop. intense stories where no one is capable of understanding themselves and act out in incorrect ways can be very fun. and sometimes it feels like contrived bullshit. whatever makes "a good story" is harder to make happen than just using the right kind of characters using the right words

"the jagers in pacific rim are unnecessary, there are far more logical solutions to the kaiju problem" "There's no reason for them to have two pilots, the script just says 'oh, one person can't do it' and moves on, and then one person immediately does." "if the plasma cannons or swords always kill the kaiju why do they bother punching them?" "The whole neural bridge thing doesn't make sense, it's just thrown in there to add conflict and tension"

girl do you want to watch a movie about giant robots fighting monsters using the power of human connection because our greatest strength as a species and as a people is that we can rely on and trust and love and be vulnerable with each other, that we need each other, and that in the face of overwhelming adversity it is the bonds we share that will deliver salvation, all framed in the form of kickass robot/monster fights rendered in gloriously wet, colorful, grimy, shiny detail? because if so you need to stop giving a shit about why the made up people in the made up world that justifies that story don't do the perfectly logical thing every single time.

(and no, this is not just about pacific rim, this is a critique of this type of criticism as a whole. sometimes people do illogical things or things contradict each other a bit in movies because it needs to be what happend in order for the movie to happen and it's hand-waved because it doesn't matter to the core of the story they're trying to tell.)

Sounds like family movie night went well!

The sword and plasma gun thing actually has a particularly solid and logical in universe explanation too, but if you are too busy looking for holes you won't see the logic right in front of you.

Every Jaeger has a kill strategy and everything about the robot and how the pilot uses them is consistentwith that strategy. Gypsy Danger uses its plasma canons, which are astoundingly lethal but are short range, large, slow to fire, and can't always be used. Kaiju in this movie are not slow, lumbering oafs, they are fast and clever and won't be so easily caught by such a difficult to use weapon. Which is why they have to fight first- to create the opportunity for a kill shot. The swords were added later as an inferior back up when the plasma cannons fail.

And you can see how this kill strategy is refined with Striker Eureka. It kills with missiles in it's chest that have similar drawbacks, but everything else about the robot is better at getting the opportunity for a kill shot. Blades are integrated now, it's faster, deploying its finisher does not reduce its fighting capacity and can be done more quickly.

The only robot we see that actually has the plan of punching them to death is Cherno Alpha, and everything about that robot is designed around that fact. It also makes sense it uses such a crude strategy as it is a first generation Jaeger. GD and SE are 3rd and 5th generation respectively.

The movie has remarkably consistent internal logic if you dig deep, but that's not what first viewings are for in this genre. Sometimes you just have to trust a movie and go on vibes.

I need you people to realize that you can be friends with people older than you. like, much older than you. like, decades older than you. you can be friends with these people. regular friends, just like anyone your age. it is possible.

When I was 20, one of my closest friends was 83. We'd hang out and watch classic westerns or talk. It's been nearly two decades since I last saw him, long enough that my poor memory has lost his name, but that's fine because I'm never gonna forget him sitting on his recliner making slightly off color jokes with a mischievous grin because his daughter would be annoyed.

I remember one time his granddaughter was over, she was like 27 and very attractive but was clearly out of my league being so much older, but after she left he started teasing me for checking out his grand daughter. It was really funny but so embarrassing. The man could be a menace when he wanted to be, he would have gotten along well with my wife.

It's been 16 years since he passed. I could say something about formative experiences, but honestly? I just wish I could spend more time with my friend, and I will never regret having spent as much time as I could with him.
