OMG the Department of Labor just this morning issued a new rule about how to classify contractors vs employees... uber and lyft are gonna get WRECKED

A summary of the new test (it's so new I haven't yet found good summary news articles)

1. Do you have control over how much money you make, not including taking more jobs/hours? (Ex: being able to charge a higher rate for your work) If not, you're an employee!

2. Can you make investments to grow your business, not merely maintain it? (Ex: a photographer buying a new camera) If not, you're an employee!

3. Is the work indefinite or continuous, i.e. not a specific time based engagement? You're an employee!

4. If someone else has control over your work - sets your schedule, dictates your prices, supervises your work (including through electronic tracking), is able to discipline you - you're an employee!

5. Is the work you do an integral part of your employer's business? You're an employee!

Okay SO in Australia the commonly accepted name for this phenomenon is "muck up day", and because we have a name for it I thought it was an Aussie thing because talking to some people it seems like it might be worldwide.

Basically "muck up day" is the last day of high school, where the year 12s (or seniors I guess. Or whatever it's called in Pomland) prank everyone else at the school for the whole day (the most famous one at mine was someone releasing a whole heard of sheep on the footy field).

Anyway TL;DR:

‘Weeding’

Darren Laustsen | May 28, 2024

Pennridge School District engaged in a massive two-year cover-up of a secret book-banning campaign initiated by two sitting Republican school board directors hellbent on unilaterally purging books without any due process, community input, oversight, or accountability.  According to a sworn Attestation from new Superintendent Angelo Berrios, Ricki Chaikin and Jordan Blomgren ordered school staff to remove books from the library that they had unilaterally deemed were inappropriate. More so, during legal battles over a Right-to-Know request, Pennridge’s law firm, Eckert Seamans, fought to circumvent the state’s Open Records laws and conceal book removals from the public. The scheme involved illegally-doctored public records, the concealment of book removals under fake student accounts, and the eventual disposal of targeted books under the false pretense of librarian “weeding.” …

I know it's been said but the changes to Maria really grate on me because....this doesn't even read as the same character anymore. Maria's design was purposeful, a very clear specific concept of a 'cool sexy girl who wears leopard print and crop tops, and have a belly button piercing and a tattoo' - it combines to a stand out character portrait of not just Maria but of James, because THATS what he finds sexy and was a stark contrast to modest, sickly Mary. The new design literally just looks like a teacher or a manager now, what the hell is that supposed to tell me about either of their sexualities.

And no this isn't a case of 'tHe cEnSorINg' - this is just misunderstanding the themes. Maria wasn't needlessly sexy, objectified for the viewer; her sex appeal was referenced in the story, and was an important part of it, one of the MAJOR themes.

i just got here but sincerely what is wrong with dorian pavus. he’s a necromancer. he helped invent time travel with his phd supervisor; this is never touched upon again. he comes out to you in front of his homophobic dad by going “sex. with men. ever heard of it”. he’s canonically so good at magic that he can keep up with god in conversation about it. constantly complains about the weather and all while he has one tit out at all times. his backstory is that he’s simultaneously a delinquent and a girlboss. he’s an alcoholic. his facial hair is completely fucking indefensible. h

Another day in the Office

Surrealist humor sure is taking on a new flavor huh

I have finally identified my only two braincells.

In 3d video games at least, objects that clip like this bump around and make so much noise because they are gaining speed as they rapidly cut between being pushed and pulled by the surface's collision box. These objects can possess immense speed even if they look relatively stationary.

Touching the chair may well result in releasing this enormous amount of confined speed into your body, which is a fun way to meet the dev team.

I know a lot is going on in the world right now but this kind of loss of art is breaking my heart in two.

The Valentino’s Costume Group in Hollywood has lost everything after the death of their co-founder, the pandemic, strikes, etc. and is now being forced to do a very quick liquidation sale before having to send all of their years of hard work to be turned into rags. (Yes this is a real thing)

These people have crafted thousands of costumes over 20 years to rent to everyone and anyone who needed one. They’re sex worker and queer friendly. They’re also being accused of being “fast fashion” while being one of the few places in this world actively working against fast fashion with their work. They don’t want to have to turn their hard work into rags. It’s the only option for them with the enormous amount of costumes/fabrics they have to remove from the building very quickly.

So, Californians and anyone willing to travel to Hollywood: YOU can save a costume! (or two?) YOU can save someone’s art from being destroyed! YOU can own pieces of Hollywood! YOU can save so much sewing supplies and fabrics!

Where: 5535 CAHUENGA BLVD, N. HOLLYWOOD

Phone: 818-427-5248

Special hours for Influencers: May 20-30th 9:30am-4:30pm MON-SUN

What: Vintage, designer, menswear, historical, specialty, children’s, shoes, jewelry, vintage hats, show packages, racks, fabric, etc!

Important note: Please be kind and patient with the folks managing this sale. There’s maybe 2-3 people working at the most, and they all just suffered the death of someone close to them and the loss of their dream.

Please, please signal boost this. Their hard work should not go to waste and this terrible loss is already hard enough on them.

More info:

The cut off date at May 30th is when they are due to make the next payment for a loan they had to take out during the strikes with the entire lot of their work as collateral. The loan company is the one saying sell or they will send it to be sold to a company that compresses and tries to resell the bulk ‘rags’. If they can make that payment they can keep the doors open for June and continue to sell/offer their costumes with somewhat less of a time crunch.

They are also working with long-distance folks through Taskrabbit shoppers/shippers and accept payments via Venmo, Paypal, Cashapp, Zelle. Any shipping/shipping costs must be managed by you and the shopper independent of Valentino’s Costume Group as they really have no one left to manage this type of work.

Prices: Most items range from $5-$20 with their vintage items ranging from $25-$100+ for much older items.

Second update:

THEY REACHED THE PAYMENT GOAL! THEY WILL BE OPEN THROUGH JUNE! Y’all saved so many already!! 🥰

Additionally, they do have some folks helping them out doing bulk orders for production companies and the like, they’ve started a fund for theater kids where they will use the money to send costumes to a school/kid’s theater group, and folks have had some success through their eBay and with Taskrabbit shopping.

They also have a Gofundme to try to cover all of it so they don’t remain in debt after all the losses. This is separate from the kid’s costume fund and would go towards the debts owed for trying to keep afloat during the pandemic and strikes.

Shit man, this wizard war is fucked. I just saw a guy clap his hands together and say "the ten hells" or some similar shit, and every one around him turned inside out, had their tibia explode and then disappeared. The camera didn't even go onto him, that's how common shit like this is. My ass is casting frostbite and level 2 poison. I think I just heard "power word:scrunch" two groups over. I gotta get the fuck outta here.

Hey, you remember when, back under GWB, there was an academic study that said drone bombing created more enemies than it could possibly kill? And GWB went on drone bombing?

And then you remember when Obama became President, he actually increased drone bombing despite having run on that being cruel and counterproductive? And then the CIA (who had started drone bombing in the first place) concluded and released their own study — which agreed with the academic one — and Obama continued to ratchet up drone bombing?

And Biden has ratcheted it up again?

Yeah, these guys absolutely do not care about the consequences. The violence is the purpose.

Ok, so the actual headline:

To put it in the most plain terms possible, the Biden administration agrees with all of us that Israel's strategy is counter productive and not militarily sound. Specifically, they are worried about the post war - Hamas has been greatly reduced as a military threat because of a lack of supplies, but the majority of the infrastructure (such as tunnels) and fighters (only 30-35% of hamas fighters recruited before oct. 7th have been killed/injured such that they cannot fight) are ready to fight as soon as they can get the supplies necessary. Add to that the massive recruitment surge and Israel is creating a nightmare post war situation.

This article is about top officials in the Biden administration pointing that out. The story here is not "the Biden Administration doesn't know that a terrorized people will fight back," it is "The Biden administration is publicly criticizing Israel for conducting this war in a way that fails to work towards any of their stated strategic goals (such as eliminating Hamas)."

"Top officials are publicly calling Israel’s strategy in Gaza self-defeating and likely to open the door to Hamas’ return — a level of criticism of the Middle East ally not seen since the war began in October."
“We want to encourage a deeper focus on the connection between the ongoing military operations and, ultimately, the strategic endgame,” said a senior administration official, granted anonymity to discuss sensitive internal discussions. “We’re going to keep pressing on that point.”

What is likely going on here is that Biden wants to stop supporting Israel because of a variety of reasons, and lets be honest a big, big part of it is because everyone is mad at him, but he thinks that politically it is untenable to suddenly abandon Israel because many centrists and basically all conservatives would hate that. Having people make these comments publicly is trying to sit on the fence and please everyone by building a case that Israels strategy is bad so when support is pulled the Biden administration can say "we want to support our ally, but if they refuse to wage war in a strategically sound way we can't."

It is important to note that several of these critical comments have come from officials known to be quite tight lipped. They don't say things like this, ever. It isn't an accident that suddenly all of them at the same time started airing their grievances publicly. They were told to do this.

This is a very, very good sign that the Biden administration is caving to public pressure. Its working, even if it is slower than we would like. We are finally making a sizable dent in US policy. Keep it up.
