Playing around with color for these studies ~ inspired by the self portraits of one of my favorite artists, Egon Schiele. I love how he used such vibrant colors to paint skin and faces.
Every now and then I have to sit down and paint a somewhat creepy and ethereal elemental spirit lady ~ I have no choice. It's just something I must do.
My approach to lighting: mix and match to find out what works. I've never been great at capturing realistic lighting so I just kind of wing it 🤷♀️
‘Tis the season to paint flowers! 🌺 I love watching the plants and flowers come back to life in these months, so it felt like a great time to paint some peonies. Round and chunky the way I like them!
Back to the drawing board with some anatomy studies ~
I tend to draw everything with the same soft pillow-like texture, so painting different surfaces is important practice for me ~ If you want to learn more about how I do this, check out my tutorial on painting different surfaces over on patreon!
An ode to my weird recurring dream in which an unnaturally tall wave towers over me.
Foreshortening is so difficult. Is it a person viewed from an extreme angle, or just someone with unnaturally long legs or feet? This is forever a struggle of mine. Here’s some attempts to capture foreshortening and difficult angles and try to improve in this area!
I drew these for last month’s drawing challenge, which was on drawing extreme angles. If you like drawing challenges, head on over to my bio and join the flame tier. This month’s challenge is already up and has tutorials, inspiration images, and reference images to help you on your way ✨
Some snippets from my sketchbook, with some color added digitally to some of them ✨
I updated my print shop! You can now purchase these paintings for your walls - and a bunch of other ones too.
Head on over to my INPRNT shop to check it out ❤️
Are they goats or are they sheep? Geep? Shoats? 🤔
I was aiming for goats, but the most important thing is that they turned out cute.
I’m really excited to announce that I plan to attend Playgrounds: The Art Department this year! Last year was a rough year for my health and I had to cancel many events as a result. I really hope this year will be different and that I will be healthy enough to attend both the Berlin and Eindhoven editions! It’s definitely a very high priority for me, so I will be doing my absolute best to be there!
Last year I planned to give a talk with my friend Iris Compiet about the messier sides of building a career as an artist, and because it was cancelled last year, we will be doing this talk at this year’s event. I will also be selling books and just hanging around! Hopefully I will see some of you there ❤️ There will also be some amazing speakers this year, so definitely check it out! For more info, check out the Playgrounds website ✨
A painting that I forgot existed but totally vibed with when I got started on it again ✨
some snippets from my sketchbook! some drawn while at the zoo. guess which
I went to the Antwerp fine arts museum and was mesmerized by the beautiful marble statues there. Here’s some studies of a few of them ~
I was in a phase of drawing marble statues, which eventually led to the creation of this painting. Don’t ask me what those blobs are. Pringles? Beans? Lava lamp wax? I have no idea 😤
I get a lot of questions about how I choose colors, and what it really comes down to is: I just play around with the color scheme until I like what I see.
This is a little preview of my latest video which talks about which tools I use to modify the colors! The full video also includes some paint-overs of other people’s artwork ~ those are always so much fun to do ✨ Find it here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/tutorial-colors-98597276
