Scientist, official adult, angry swan, cautionary tale. Someone has to be the grownup here and I hate it when it's me

You said (I think, can't find the post right now) that Killie doesn't mind not having much of a chance in the Grand National this year because he's already won it. What are his *unfulfilled* professional goals?

Killie the fictional jockey OC is doing well in his career. he's been champion jockey at least three times - as an apprentice, as a steeplechaser (jump jockey), and on the flat. that's very hard to do, and it consumed a lot of his attention.

He loves steeplechasing, but it's only really popular in Ireland, the UK and France. He's less interested in flat racing, but it's a much more international sport, with higher purses, more prestige, more races, etc. It isn't entirely up to him what races he rides - he has to be offered them by an owner/trainer - and he'd have to be invited specifically in order to go overseas. Killie would dearly like to win some more of the Grade 1 flat races in other nations, such as the Japan Cup. They have high purses, of which a cut would make a big difference to him, and lots of prestige, plus proving that he's truly an international-quality athlete, rather than a big competitively sized fish in a small pond. (And any of the ones with really pretty trophies. he's kind of weak to the ones that are a giant gold horse sculpture, that you get to keep forever, and it has your name on it.)

Hat tip @idiomagic, the Breeders' Cup line of trophies would torment Killie with their existence until he had a decent line of them on a shelf. (which is just as well, because I think one or two Breeders' Cup races are all Killie's done in America.) Look at it. don't you just want to go apeshit

obviously athletes don't actually structure their highkey, all-consuming, dangerous, erratically paid careers based on the prettiness of the trophies they want to win (you can just buy horse sculptures! you could just collect Breyers!) but there's something about WINNING a GREAT BIG ONE for the trophy cupboard that just goes straight to Killie's brainstem. like the point of his LIFE is winning and snatching that bastard and holding it up. that's how you KNOW you've WON and nobody can take it away! not ever!! you're in the statistics now! you're in the record books, somewhere! it's in your house! that is your TROPHY your TREASURE your WIN!

Since my blog (and my life) is rapidly becoming more and more focused on working with kids, I wanted to share a tidbit from my notes app that has been my guiding star recently.

- [ ] How does this rule relate to our core values? (Kindness, respect, chivalry, bravery.)

- [ ] Is this rule necessary? (Is it either notably improving performance/productivity, or keeping someone safe?)

- [ ] Is this rule enforced equitably? (To bigs and littles, to boys and girls, etc. Boundaries and consequences should be the same for everyone. How is this rule applied to adults?)

- [ ] Is this rule easy-to-follow? (Can we reduce temptations and instances for rule-breaking to create an environment where respecting rules is easier?)

- [ ] Is this rule clear? (Do kids understand why this rule exists and how it either keeps people safe or increases productivity? Do they understand the boundaries and consequences related to this rule?)

- [ ] Does this rule have natural consequences? (What happens when the rule is broken? How is this discipline a natural consequence of rule-breaking rather than an arbitrary punishment?)

I gave a victorian kid some sour patch kids and he sprinkled a little bit of cocaine on it as casually as you would salt before even taking a bite

he was biting the sour patch kids?

Yeah that's how you eat them

i stick them in my mouth whole. am i the weird one or is the victorian kid the weird one? about the biting, not the cocaine. i do that part too.

Do you. At least chew them

yeah i do chew them i just dont feel a need to take a bite out of something that's already bite-sized, yknow? it's like taking a bite out of a skittle, to me. could definitely just be me though

oy where do i get more of these nectar-sweet bastards what are colored like precious stones

fuck OFF thomas

He was biting them because he’s so much littler than you. Look at him. He can’t get a whole one in his mouth. You could lose him down a drain. When you put him up a chimney, even a small chimney, you probably have to give him directions like he’s on the Swindon magic roundabout. SECOND LEFT AT THE NEXT BRICK, Thomas. NO, OTHER BRICK. NO, THE OTHER LEFT.

You shouldn’t salt your sour patch kids btw it’s bad for you

Thank you for that important addendum. Putting cocaine on them is fine though, right?

Yeah yeah I’m not his mum

Ah, man, I'm so sorry I missed Eggs for Killie- by the time I figured out what was happening it was over :(

(A small soft-boiled egg in this trying time: I pitched a game to a niche indie publisher and got my edit letter back and responded to it)

Don't worry about it! It retroactively is a funny April Fool activity!

Well, I am extremely proud of you, and thank you so much for sharing. Well done.

Hey, no need to respond or post, but - thank you for doing Eggs for Killie, and giving people a chance to show off their art and be vulnerable and courageous and excited. It's been such a joy to watch, and I think we all needed the mutual encouragement.

thank you so much for saying "no need to respond" because it made me feel a lot more able to respond. It was a lot of fun and everyone deserves encouragement.

I think it's weird that people would unfollow you over the eggs for killie thing. Like yeah unmanageable dashboard I guess? But tbh I missed the beginning of it and never had any context for why they were eggs or what Killie had to do with it and my reaction was just "oh, people are finishing their projects. neat."

Avatar

Yeah, while I'm sympathetic to unmanageable dashboards and people being confused, I think the value and energy we saw was worth a lot more than anything else! Of course people can and should unfollow for any reason - I would prefer if they did - but it gave me useful information about how people would manage the content. it's not something I'm going to stress about too much, but if I were to support a more regular "eggs for killie" project (and I think that would be super fun and worthwhile!) I'd try to think of ways to manage it. A really good suggestion has been a sideblog and queuing system.
