Diane Duane

@dduane / dduane.tumblr.com

The writer: 40 years in print, 50+ novels, assorted TV and movie work, the NYT Bestseller List a few times, blah blah blah. Best known for: the Young Wizards series (1983-2020 and beyond), the Middle Kingdoms LGBTQ epic fantasy series (1979-2023), and a whole lot of work for Star Trek. Long postings mostly turn up on my main blog at DianeDuane.com. Shorter stuff goes here: links, images, video, random thoughts... things that tickle my fancy, move me, or seem to need sharing. Also appearing: scraps of what I'm working on, recipes, fangirling, and other mental/emotional incunabula. Almost everything interests me, so beware. Now also at Bluesky and Mastodon At Ebooks Direct:

At Ebooks Direct: the Middle Kingdoms bundle drops!

...Ideally this should have happened a week or so ago, but life keeps interfering in my plans. :)

Anyway: for those who might like to pick up all the writing in this LGBTQ-centered fantasy universe at once, here's a good way to do it! The Ebooks Direct Middle Kingdoms bundle contains:

Individually, at retail price, these ebooks would total $43.91. But as a bundle, we're delighted to offer them to you at a 30% discount: meaning the bundle is on sale for $29.95.

As usual, all the above ebooks are DRM-free, so you can move them around among your devices as you please. Also as usual, all purchases from Ebooks Direct are covered by our lifetime file replacement guarantee. And lastly as usual (and unfortunately), if you're based in the UK, we regret to tell you that we can't sell to you because of Brexit. We're so sorry. :/

Meanwhile: thanks for your interest, all!

This is the best gif set ever, I’m done.

I really want Gordon Ramsay to be a guest star on Hannibal.

What the fuck am I eating?”

Every day I mourn not being in the Hannibal fandom in 2013

Good Omens and ancient Rome board games:

I remember looking up ancient board games and came across so many versions of tic-tac-toe within the area of Rome. These are some of the names they had back then!

As someone who was recently in Fukui, this isn't even scratching the surface of how mad the town is for dinosaurs.

For example, here is the outside of the train station:

If you thought that they were only outside the station, think again!

The last dinosaur has a crab, because the region is known for seafood.

You can even buy coffee emblazoned with dinosaurs!

And that's not even getting into how you get to the nearby Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum. Behold, the Dino-Liner:

And if you're like, man I don't know how the museum will top all of these dinosaurs, boy do I have news for you.

And then you get to the cafe:

But, eventually, it was time to head back to the train station...on the dino bus.

my biggest pet peeve wiht the english language is that you don’t have sin/sina

in swedish if u have two people who use the same pronoun u can always tell whos doing what bc its like ‘han tog sin väska’ (he took his[own] bag) and ‘han tog hans väska’ would be that he took the other persons bag

but in english its like if u have 2 ppl w/ the same pronoun:

“she took her bag” whose bag????WHose BAG was it her OWN bag or the other her’s bag??????????????

“he ate his donuts” were the donuts his own???? did he fucking eat someone elses donuts??? YIU DONT KNOW bc english is a bullshit language

its funny that people are calling this the gay fanfiction dilemma bc thats literally why i made this post. i was writing a gay fanfic.

The children are learning about the US Civil War. I can’t say it’s going well. (On the bright side, they’re very clear about slavery. We’re solid on that front. It’s the actual war we’re having trouble with.)

“Ms. T, why would his parents name him that?”

I frantically flip through the possible Civil War leaders they could be referencing. “… Well, you know how Stonewall got his nickname, and we’ve talked about Tecumseh, so there’s Sherman, and -”

“No, not them.” They roll their eyes at my ignorance, then pivot back to the point at hand. “That other guy. Useless.” As this describes a number of Civil War leaders, I blink uncomprehendingly at her. “You know, Ms. T, Useless. Useless Grant.”

“Um. … Well -”

Another child raises their hand. “Ms. T, I don’t understand number three.”

Number three is a question about the Battle of Bull Run, asking for explanations about a Confederate victory despite Union advantages. “What paragraph are you looking in?” I ask in a monotone, because I’ve been fielding this question all day.

The student points at the correct paragraph, even focuses in on the quote about Jackson holding off a Union advance. “It says Jackson and the men ‘screamed like furries,’ Ms. T, but why would that help?”

I cough. I cover my mouth with both hands. “That’s ‘furies,’ sweetie,” I inform them, still wheezing. “Like they’re insane with anger,” I elaborate, deciding to skip describing actual furies at this point in time. “Not … not like furries.”

So, here’s how the war is going, one week in: Useless Grant has been made general of the Union forces, but a bunch of furries are preventing him from gaining much ground.
