"The Man in the Iron Mask" (1998) - Randall Wallace

Films I've watched in 2022 (78/210)

I love this film. The costumes, the actors, the score, the buckling of swash, it all just makes for a properly good movie.

The rock solid foundation of this film is the casting of the Musketeers; they are on an absolute equal footing when it comes to gravitas and character. A feeling that any of them set up against the other would be a fair fight, one which outcome you couldn't predict in advance.

You simply can't go wrong with the casting of John Malkovich (Athos), Gérard Depardieu (Porthos), Jeremy Irons (Aramis) and Gabriel Byrne (D'Artagnan); they each bring so much to their roles, and, unlike in a lot of Musketeer films, they all feel equally important, like good friends with a symbiotic relationship; four essential quarters of a whole, rather than what it so often is: two or three really good ones and one or two who are very forgettable. (The 1993 version came close, but falls a bit flat with Chris O'Donnell's D'Artagnan.)

The less said about DiCaprio, the better...

And the final battle... Nope, I don't think I'll ever be over that.

Ok but like. What the fuck is there to do on the internet anymore?

Idk when I was younger, you could just go and go and find exciting new websites full of whatever cool things you wanted to explore. An overabundance of ways to occupy your time online.

Now, it’s just… Social media. That’s it. Social media and news sites. And I’m tired of social media and I’m tired of the news.

Am I just like completely inept at finding new things or has the internet just fallen apart that much with the problems of SEO and web 3.0 turning everything into a same-site prison?

Long collection of resources under the cut.

ALSO you should consider browsing Virtual Pet List and seeing if there are any pet sites you might be interested in playing. There is a whole genre of browser games right under your nose

Another one that I just found recently is this, which is a whole collection of blogs, organized by topic!

Look guys the real internet IS STILL THERE I’m going to cry

Getting off of twitter and onto neocities has really healed me and I am so glad to see it is healing other people too ;u; let’s retreat into the self-made digital woods and away from corporate bs pls, I am so tired

The internet is still there, it’s just been cordoned off by The Internet™️ in hopes that we forget about it and keep feeding data to the Machine.

I love how we say "PROTECT THIS CHARACTER AT ALL COSTS" and then we go and hurt them like they have never been hurt before

it’s kate bishop again

[Image Description: a digital drawing of kate bishop from the 2012 hawkeye comics. she’s looking slightly at the side with a cocky grin. her black hair is tied into a bun and she’s posing with a hand on her hip. with her other hand, mostly covered by her body, she is holding a black purse. she’s wearing a purple dress with black scribbles all over it, a thick black belt, white gloves, and a diamond pendant necklace. there’s a text bubble on the right that reads “omg clint, you actually own a suit!” and another one on the left said by an out of frame character (clint barton / hawkeye) that reads “ha. ha. very funny, kate.” in a sarcastic tone. the background is a solid light gray purple. /end ID]

I adore this because even if the colours are off this is so clearly a black-crowned night heron based on vibes alone. Somebody saw that hunched little guy clambering around some branches one evening and went "well that's just delightful"

did anyone ever tell the Backstreet Boys why

My FAVORITE quote, of all time, is from the like, 2008 VH1 Top 50 Best Boy Band Songs special when AJ was commentating this song’s #1 win and he said, “I’ve never understood this song. WHAT WAY do I want it? And why DON’T I want it that way if SHE wants it that way? What’s the way? This song makes no sense. But man, they paid me to sing it.”

He was so distressed about his confusion, and I loved it. I love this song. It is truly the song of all time.

The songwriter, Max Martin, has written or contributed to the lyrics for a huge number of pop hits since the 90s. Max Martin is Swedish, and English is not his first language, a fact which feels incredibly obvious once you know it.

It’s not my intention to mock him for this–his English is miles ahead of my Swedish!–but this sincere vagueness and novel interpretations of English grammar are a noticeable quirks of his songs, especially his earlier work, so much so that trying to tease apart the individual words and phrases of the songs is a task designed for a Greek tragedy. His songs are the aursl embodiment of “no thoughts just vibes.”

Citation: Slate’s 2014 article/highlight reel of some of Martin’s most baffling lyrical Decisions:

They don’t bring it up in that article, but Martin is also responsible for Britney Spears’s “…One More Time,” and I’m sorry to anyone in whom something was awakened with those lyrics, but our good friend Max thought “hit me” was contemporary American slang for “call me.”

I feel like this adds a thin, waxy coating of surrealism in a genre whose worst examples can lean hard toward bland vapidity, and I love that Backstreet Boys lyrics are still making people question their sanity 25 years on. But mostly I can’t get over the thought of all of these singers–many of them already really big before they worked with Martin–puzzling their way through these lyrics enough to figure out how to sell the shit out of them.

fun fact: Boston Museum of Science calls their evening lecture series “SubSpace”, which would be a totally innocuous math term except for the fact that, to make sure you know these lectures are higher-level and not aimed at their usual audience (kids), they chose to subtitle it “SubSpace: Adult Experiences”

😶

me at the SubSpace wearing a leash and "free use" written on my tits in sharpie: wow I never knew Riemannian manifolds were so interesting

someone either didn't think this through, or thought it through very carefully while snickering gleefully the entire time

The latter. They have to compete with the tentacle fuckers at the New England Aquarium.

Robe à Transformation

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

"An air of coquettishness and youthful presence inform this set of French dress coordinates. The colorful and spritely decorative details lend a sense of whimsy. The choice of fabric and the inclusion of alternate bodices made this ensemble appropriate for both late day and evening wear."

I just have one question... How could Steve abandon Bucky?

I'm not talking about his going back to be with Peggy, that's whatever. But when he went back, he then had to live through the following years knowing Bucky, his best friend, his brother, is currently being held captive by Hydra.

He's living with the knowledge that Bucky is being tortured, arguably spiritually destroyed, by them.

He knows that his best friend is going through immeasurable pain that will take years to recover from - he knows that when he leaves future Bucky, he's still broken.

Say what ever you want about the whole "well he knew he couldn't mess with the timelines" because yeah, I get that. But as a character, I just can't see Steve Rogers being able to live with the knowledge that someone he loves is living through hell while he's playing happy families.
