Offerings and their Removal

Disclosure, this may not apply to everyone! Cherry pick it if that works for you, or take none at all. Just no hate or arguments in the comments!

Definition- Offering - Something given to an entity or deity to show appreciation. This can also be something done or said to show appreciation.

~~~~~Types of Offerings~~~~~~
Food- In ancient tradition, the first bites of food were thrown into the fire to be sent through the gods by smoke. However, this isn't an option for many people these days. Alternative methods are favored.
  • Fire - The old methods are still applicable if available. If one has a bon fire or fire-place/hearth, the first bite of food can still be "smoked" , per-say.
  • Prayer - A small prayer can be said over food before the first bite is taken. Just a simple "Entity/spirit, please accept this offering, Blessed Be" or something similar can suffice. This, for some deities like Hestia can be done at the end too. This is more convenient for a hidden practice and for those who can't afford to waste food.
  • Altar- If you have an altar, or ever a small bowl, they can place the first bite of food there for the deity entity too.
Objects and Trinkets- Just like us, deities/entities love little trinkets. Whether it be a few coins you find nice to a statue or an engraved candle. Whatever it my be, it can be given to an entity with a prayer and/or on an altar in their honor.
  • Removables - There are some things that can be placed on altar and taken off. I like to call them removables. When placed on an altar, one could say "Entity/Deity, bless this object, with your energy and blessings." let it sit for a moment or cleanse with incense. If a clothing item, accessory, or perfume, you can take it off and use/wear it. Just remember to put it back to refresh the energy and discuss before taking it off for the first time.
Actions - There are also things that one can do in offer of a deity or entity. They can be small things, like prayers, to full-on rituals.
  • Prayer- This is probably the easiest in my opinion. It can be a small "Hey entity/deity, I appreciate you." on the go, or reciting a hymn or a prayer by the altar. It's incredibly diverse and can meld to any practice.
  • Chores - This can apply more to some deities than others, but just Keeping your room and house tidy can be done in honor of a deity. Altars specifically can be cleaned or re-arranged as an offering
  • Art-In ancient times, arts of every kind were offered to deities ant spirits. And it can fit most anyone's style.
Music- written specifically or just a song you think reminds you of them. Drawings/Paintings- try thing that reminds you of the deity or how you see them can be drawn or painted. Others- Pottery, Dance, Crocheting or handy crafts, or even more. All can be done in offering to a deity. Specifics - If you have done research into who you're offering to, you can offer specific things. Sleep for Hypnos, Baking bread for Hestia, Rehearsing if in the arts for Dionysus, etc. Self Care- This not a lot of people think applies, however the gas most want you to be kind to your self. whether it be a bath with oils, flower petals, and all the works to just brushing your teeth at night. All would make the gods/entities very proud of you!!
~~~~~~~Disposal~~~~~~~

This is something a bit more difficult; You did the thing, you think it's time, now what do you do? A decent chunk of this section was taken from @khaire-traveler. Obviously, actions cannot be "removed" Once the action is complete, the offering is sent.

Food- khaire narrowed it into 4 options that I really like. Just remember, when on an alter, don't let it sit too long for health concerns (rotting, bugs, etc.)

  • Consume - After praying aver the food like I had mentioned before.
  • Bum - Also mentioned before, but can be done after sitting at an altar for awhile.
  • Bury- Food offerings. if safe for local wildlife, can be buried. "My logic in burying them (only if environmentally safe) is returning the offering to the earth in a sense." (khair-3) (Yes its MLA cited, AP capstone has rotted my brain) If that fits Your practice, it is a good option.
  • Dispose, - This, like everything else here, must be done with respect. Clarify with the entity/deity that you aren't doing so out of disrespect, rather because this is your preferred disposal style or your only option

Objects/Art Pieces- If you have this ability, talk to your entity/deity about it, clarify there is no disrespect in the removal, and give the deity some time to de-attach to it. Slowly, the energy will fade from the object when kept away from the altar. This doesn't need to a ritual, but can be if that's what you prefer

Thank you for reading! This is my first fore into the pagan-sphere, so if this is something a lot of people like, I'll continue! Blessed Be, Alyssa the Witch!

Low Energy Devotional Activities and Ways to Connect with the Gods

Let's be honest, religion and consistent practice can be HARD, especially when you're chronically ill, disabled, mentally ill or neurodivergent. This is a list of lower energy practices you can do to connect with your Gods when you're having a rough day.

  • Pray. You don't have to say the prayer. You don't have to do the full cleansing and offering. Just think about the prayer. It could be as simple as "'Deity Name', thank you. I'm thinking of you and appreciate you."
  • Dedicate any self care you do to the Gods. You've got to take meds? awesome. it's now a devotional activity.
  • If you can, light a tea light candle. You can think about who you're dedicating it to as you're lighting it.
  • Tell them about your day. Have a simple conversation with them (again, this can be in your head if needed).
  • Offer some water! Water is a great offering if you don’t have the energy to cook, collect or buy something.
  • Incense is also a great offering because you can light it then forget about it and your house won’t burn down (if you follow regular safety measures).
  • Resting. Your deities want you to be okay. Dedicating your rest to your deities is especially great if you feel guilty for allowing yourself time to heal.
  • Turn on a video of someone reading mythos!
  • Put on a deity playlist. There are plenty of pre-made ones on Spotify.
  • Veil or bind your hair! Whenever I’m low energy I’ll throw my hair in a ponytail and bind it that way. It doesn’t have to be extravagant.
  • Make a Pinterest board for them!
  • Post on a digital altar! There are plenty of discord servers that have digital altars and temples. You could also make a devotional Tumblr blog.
  • Change your phone lock/home screen to something that reminds you of your Deity.

I hope this is helpful to anyone who needs it! Take care of yourself first and foremost. If you don't think you can manage something on this list then thats perfectly fine too! you're not a bad person for not being able to do something spiritual or religious. Ultimately, these things are not a necessity. Don't stress :)

Low Energy/Effort Witchcraft

Are you perpetually busy? Never have any spoons? This might be the post for you. Note that not everything here may be considered low energy or low effort to everyone, and that's okay :)

  • Carry a crystal around based on what you need. I have a black tourmaline bracelet that absorbs negative vibes throughout the day. I stick it on a selenite slab when I get home to cleanse overnight, then rinse and repeat in the morning.
  • Put a bay leaf in your wallet to attract money. If you have time, draw a sigil or a $/£/€ on it.
  • Dedicate anything you drink to your deities if you have any. I dedicate water and black tea to everyone and my favourite raspberry tea to Hathor. Coffee is for Caim.
  • Enchant your pill case so you remember to take them on time. Enchant your pills to work efficiently. ("Anxiety begone. Ye be banished" on all of my anxiety pills ✌️)
  • Draw a sigil on your body wash bottle to remove bad vibes or carve a sigil in a bar of soap.
  • Enchant your moisturizer to repel the evil eye. I fucking love this one.
  • Incorporate colour magic into the socks you wear (Goths who wear hot pink socks, I'm looking at you).
  • Enchant your charger so it doesn't break and so you don't lose it. Enchant your phone too while you're at it.

Sorry, I love enchantments--

Uhhhhh

  • Match those big ol jar candles to different intentions. Burn a cedar candle to cleanse/banish. Burn a cinnamon candle to draw in prosperity. Burn a citrus candle to uplift mood. This one is fantastic for broom closet witches.
  • Got a humidifier? Fill it up with moon water. You're welcome ;D
  • Politely ask the spirits of your plants to ward your space. Feed two birds with one scone this way.
  • Witchy social media. Scrolling on Tumblr and learning something new about witchcraft counts as witchcraft imo. Saving tarot spreads from Instagram for later counts too. Making Pinterest boards for literally anything also counts.
  • Keep a digital grimoire if doing it on paper costs too many spoons. I have used Google docs & drive in the past but I currently use Notion (You can copy and paste this way!)
  • If you still want a physical grimoire, print your stuff out and stick it in a binder or glue it in your journal. Boom. Physical grimoire
  • Listen to witchcraft related videos in the background while you do other tasks or chores in your home
  • Preparing a meal? Toss in spices that correspond with good health and drawing in positivity, or any other intention you have
  • Enchant your glasses to help you focus and "read between the lines" or see what wants to remain hidden (this one is a lifesaver at my job)

If someone said to me, "I'm a beginner witch and I want to cover my bases in case I run into magical trouble," I would recommend:

  • One home ward for general protection, probably as a container spell or as an artificial spirit (perhaps using clove, red pepper, cinnamon, and soil or dust from the corners of the home/property), for the purpose of keeping out ill-fortune, ill-intent, and unwanted guests
  • One completely separate home ward, probably as a container spell (perhaps using dill, rosemary, and garlic), for the purpose of keeping out uninvited spirits, unwanted spirits, and malefica sent intentionally or unintentionally by other practitioners
  • One heavy-duty protective amulet, probably made of rusty nails or a piece of hematite or otherwise iron, for the purpose of behaving as a suit of heavy armor in case of spiritual alarm; to be carried about as you solve the problem; the effects of which may be encumbering and too imposing for everyday use
  • One more mild protective amulet (perhaps made of amethyst jewelry, or an acorn, or an oak twig cross), for the purpose of providing an immediate protection against ill spirits and energies; to be worn when a shield is desired, but a shielding energy-working technique is too draining or time-consuming; should be comfortable to wear as often as desired

Of all of these things, avoid repeating ingredients across charms, unless you are in special allyship with a certain spirit.

Those persons also suffering from nightmares or disturbed dreams may also benefit from:

  • One bedroom ward, probably a container spell or Witch's Ladder (perhaps containing star anise, amethyst, knotted cord, spiders or the forms of spiders, and rosemary), for the purpose of tangling up ill spirits and ill energies which inspire bad dreams.

Of any ward and amulet, feed it a minimum of once a season; if they're working often to provide assistance, or if the effects run out, increase feeding to once a month; in times of distress, feed weekly or as needed.

Spirit Work: Terminology

This post is based off of a UPG (unverified personal gnosis) that deities are spirits, all animals, plants, and forms of creatures who possess souls are spirits, ie: ghosts, deities, and dragons.

A deity is a mystical presence, like a god, that is worshipped by individuals who believe it commands or wields influence over a characteristic of existence. In the witch world, many worship or work with deities or spirits. However, you never need to do this to be a valid witch, and always hold magic within yourself as well.

Worshipping Vs Working With:

Worship:

Worshipping is to believe, honor, and venerate a spirit or deity. This means not only believing in their existence, but admiring their power and displaying gratitude and loyalty towards them.

Working With:

Working with an entity is different than worshipping, although many consider it important to start worship before working with any spirit or deity. (That doesn't mean stop when you start working with them though!) This is when an entity comes through with energy, messages, and is willing to guide you.

Terminology:

Aspect:

Aspects are a phrase utilized across various beliefs and in theology to illustrate a particular manifestation or perception of a deity or spirit. Subject on the religion, these may possibly be separate, overlapping, or methods of perceiving or conceptualizing the deity in a distinct context.

Devotee:

A passionate or fervent believer in a particular religion, deity, or spirit. To explain further, an individual who is completely devoted and given almost exclusively to conviction, and one who is spiritually committed to conscientious obligations, principles, and ceremonies.

Devotion:

An act of prayer, offering, or ritual, generally cast in private. This can range from playing music, to writing poetry for them. Devotions are often considered to occur solely in the mornings in some cultures.

Epithet:

In Hellenic and European primitive times, an epithet was a informative term to be associated with or occurring in place of the name of a deity or spirit. These epithets are repeated continuously in their ancient literary works, and this phrase is used to specify the characteristics of a deity or spirit.

Matron:

A distinct Goddess you feel most linked and relaxed working in alongside, and can often be demonstrated within themselves. The amount of Matrons an individual may have is a subject to preference.

Offering:

An offering is to put forward something to a deity is to show and recognize allegiance, appreciation, and passion. Offerings are usually given in devotions, in veneration of, and general rituals.

Oracle:

A human being that an entity is conducted to answer when consulted, they convey messages through this deity with the ability of communication of them. Oracles are considered to be dead to many, although there are reconstructionists today.

Patron:

A distinct Goddess or God you feel most connected and comfortable working in conjunction with, and is often displayed within their temperament. The number of patrons a human can have is a matter of choice, although most individuals choose one as their principal spirit.

Priest:

A priest is a human certified to execute the blessed traditions of a religion, deity, or spirit. A Priest is regarded as an authority, and often requires an initiation. This is also sometimes referred to as a High Priest.

Priestess:

A priestess is a woman certified to execute the blessed traditions of a religion, deity, or spirit. A Priestess is regarded as an authority, and often requires an initiation. This is also sometimes referred to as a High Priestess.

Veneration:

To venerate is to worship, respect, and admire another. Metaphysically, veneration is often used as a term of worship to a spirit or deity. Unconditional belief and devotion can be associated with this term.
