this has always been the ethos of Zionism, I saw this myself when I visited Israel as a younger person, it was made very clear to me the accepted belief was this: that the existence of the state of Israel is equivalent to the existence of Judaism. And therefore, to question the state of Israel means turning against the Jewish people. And frankly the Jewishness of diasporic Jews has always been up for debate in the eyes of Israelis. Hence the birthright project, which they see as a gracious gesture towards allowing the illegitimate people of the diaspora to become legitimate Jews in the form of Israeli citizenship.
As eager as Israel is to indoctrinate diasporic Jews into identification and enmeshment with Zionism, it is equally as willing to disown Jews who refuse that identification, because we are hugely inconvenient to the Zionist project, politically speaking.
