established facts from social science about how social power and the systems that comprise it actually work are what give power to marginalized voices when they criticize bigoted behavior. without the common understanding that any given micro- or macro-aggression is part of a larger whole, in the form of a pervasive social dynamic that has a name and working definition, every dispute between a person with more social power and a person with less gets atomized down to a disconnected he-said-she-said (so to speak).

pretending that "misandry" is real, not because observation and analysis and argument have articulated its contours into a body of widespread theoretical understanding, but on the individual personal authority of men who are marginalized along some other axis and want to conflate that with their maleness, undercuts the weight and power of actual marginalizations. if a woman is being treated in a sexist way by a man, and she calls out his behavior as sexist, and he can respond that actually she is being misandrist, and this is treated by the people around them as being of equal validity, then we are in fucking clown pudding world, & the woman is worse off.

we don't decide that entire fucking civilization-wide social forces exist on the basis of "but that's my perception of my experience, are you invalidating me??" we acknowledge they exist because we can observe & point to facts and patterns and coherent arguments that identify and describe them. there isn't a legitimate or substantial body of theory describing the ways and characteristics of "misandry" because it doesn't motherfucking exist it's a fucking fantasy

what hurts a man of color is not patriarchy, it is racism. what hurts a disabled man is not patriarchy, it is ableism. what hurts a trans man is not patriarchy, it is transphobia. a careful, rigorous analysis will show that actually, patriarchy is the name of the social force that gives these men whatever small measure of power they retain in society in spite of being otherwise marginalized. each of these men would, ALL other things being the same, have less privilege & power if they weren't men.
