I fucking knew it, I SAID it: they're making ADHD people the next culture war targets. They will 'just ask questions' until we lose every scrap of ground we've gained in the last decade and more. We may not quite inspire the same level of hatred as a sexual minority, but we can very easily be made to inspire disdain and that also works.

They will strip us of our accomodations and our medications and try to stifle any sense of shared identity, and if that kills some of us, oh well. So long as it fuels another outrage cycle, fine.

So many of the tropes they've been using on trans people work extremely well on ADHD people too! "There are too many of these people suddenly! It must be a fad! It spreads through friend groups! And online! People are going private for diagnoses and that's bad! They are using pOwERfUl medical interventions and we think it's freaky!"

I saw the first ripples of this in terf circles about two years ago. And of course it's spread.

6% of British ADHD people lost their jobs in the last year thanks to the meds shortage. SIX PER CENT! And that just made these ghouls go "ooh, tasty, what else can we do?"

Recently an 'expert' was on the BBC saying people see ADHD diagnosis as a "golden ticket." Laurence Fox has been ranting that the condition doesn't exist and threatening "'you won't poison my child's body [with ADHD meds] against my consent"

People need to be aware this is going to get worse. Maybe, if we're lucky, it won't get really bad. But it's going to get worse than it is now.

I got diagnosed at 36, got prescribed adderall, and went from continually dependent on men in order to to afford housing for myself, to able to hold a steady job for the first time in my life, and even to achieve promotions.

Late diagnoses are a sign of people realizing that they don't need to suffer. It's not a fad, it's a cultural shift toward rejection of pointless, unnecessary struggle.

We seriously need the boomers to get the fuck out of legislation.

This is why I fully believe we need to decriminalize all drugs. The current system doesn't do anything to help people, it's based on racist bullshit, and restricting access to meds only makes the problem worse, not better.

Like the problem with opioids isn't really people being given them too much, it's that people need them and when they no longer have access to safe, legal pain relief they turn to street drugs and then they die because street drugs aren't safe. And for those who do become addicted after a prescription, what they need is real help, not just being given methadone with no plan to taper off and treated like a criminal who can't be trusted for the rest of their lives.

When you are denied help from doctors you turn to other means. Denying people with ADHD adderall will just make them turn to unhealthy alternatives, which will lead to actual addiction and death, because for a lot of us losing access to our medication means losing the lives we have worked so hard to build, and obviously we would do anything to not end up unemployed or unhoused or dead. And like people with ADHD usually cannot get addicted to adderall, anyway, it doesn't make us high, and most of us aren't gonna sell it to non-ADHD people because of how badly we need it. Taking away a drug that is non-addictive for the people who need it doesn't make any sense and is just a recipe for an actual addiction epidemic that will kill a lot of people.

Honestly what radicalized me on this topic was having severe insomnia and having every doctor deny me help because no non-narcotic we tried helped and they wouldn't give me ambien because they just think narcotics aren't good for people(my psychatrist literally said to my face "narcotics are bad for you" which imo isn't a good enough fucking reason when not sleeping is visibly killing me). Not sleeping was killing me, and I'm lucky enough to live somewhere weed is legal and have enough money to regularly buy it, so I have something that will let me sleep. If I lived somewhere else I would have to choose between continuing to destroy my life not sleeping or do something dangerous and illegal, and once you're faced with a choice like that you realize the true nature of the system and how fucking broken it is.

Trying to get adderall is already difficult for a lot of people, making it harder will just lead to disabled people(bcs ADHD is a disability, fight me) doing dangerous things and suffering and dying, because that's all denying people help has ever done. When your suffering is great enough you will do anything to end it, the government deciding to make our suffering worse won't fix a goddamn thing.

But I guess to these people suffering is better than maybe possibly turning into an addict at some point.
