bastille has done more for the queer community by just making all of their love songs about "you" instead of specifying a gender than taylor swift has in all of her discography. thanks for coming to my ted talk.

this post is VERY funny bc it has a fuck ton of likes and like. two reblogs. the fear of the wrath of the swifties is VISCERAL.

There's this perception on here among neurodivergent people that neurotypical social behaviour is all fake and arbitrary. That it's a cruel, baseless game played to "weed out" ND people or to cause pain and complicate things on purpose.

This is wrong. All of those social rules and nuances ARE communication. Sorry if this is rude but it's not the NTs' fault if things don't gel- the gap goes both ways. Just because communication doesn't make sense to you, doesn't mean it's random or purposeless. Remember this post?

Every interaction in an NT conversation has purpose, and communicates something, and I don't understand why nobody ever explains this to ND people. There's information on basic stuff like facial expressions, but never what any of it actually means.

Small talk about the weather isn't about the weather. It's about how nice it is to be around the people you're talking to, or feeling out their understanding of the world, or just saying that you're both present and people and you're being people together. It's not literal. The words are, but the broad scope isn't.

A conversation is not just an exchange of words, it's an exchange of acknowledgement, attention, and emotional understanding. Of course it confuses people when their part in that exchange is met with flat affect or unembelished words. It's like looking in a mirror and not seeing your reflection.

to me the funniest part of Laios is a character is the fact that he's genuinely really good at what he does. it would be one thing if he was just a monster geek in a way other people find really offputting, but he can also bisect something twice his size in a single blow

in this way, like so many others, he and marcille are secretly The Same

dungeon meshi has the Mob Psycho Sauce where it's funny even when its serious and serious even when its funny. like, this is a hilarious thing about laios — but also ties into the fundamental logic of the story.

Laois is not good at what he does AND a monster geek. he is good at what he does BECAUSE he is a monster geek. in dungeon meshi, survival in the dungeon isn't due to physical strength or dnd-style party balance or asskicking ability or Willpower. the narrative takes great pains to show that it is respect, knowledge and love of a place that gives one the ability to survive and thrive in that place. that's why we see people like Kabru's party, who are clearly very skilled warriors in their own right, look like absolute CLOWNS in their encounters with dungeon dangers that are barely a hiccup for laois's party

Like, Laois can't bisect something twice his size in a single blow because he's a Strong Cool Protagonist, but because all the things he's fighting are things he deeply loves, respects, and is autistically insane about enough to know their weaknesses. the special interest that makes him a weirdo on the surface makes the dungeon his natural habitat.

That last fucking sentence.

actually no both of those goddamn sources are either paywalled over any way to read the paper (looking at you, NYT; here's an archive link) or just don't contain any source at all, so here's the actual published article (Fleming 2024). It, unlike the NYT reporting, is fucking open source and free to access, so that source should be easily accessible to anyone.

Following someone you supposedly hate to their alts is so bizarre. This James Somerton stuff feels like Chris-chan but for leftists. Doing lolcow but wokely

Don't get it twisted the dude seems like a real weed. Frustrating and upsetting corner of the internet where people just churn content out at the expense of others. But dude has been catapulted into the sun. What's the point on spreading an account where he's posting nudes and talking about Disney. Find something better to do with your time before cringe-watching becomes your hobby.

THESIS: the real reason that people stay on this hellsite is not “chronological order” or “the drama” or whatever (per se), but is instead linked to how tumblr, unlike most social media, is not optimised to give content as short of a half-life as possible, but instead is optimised to let content continue to cycle for months, years, even decades. this has in turn led to a more consistent centralised site “culture” in which there is more coherent linkage among different areas of the site, thus also explaining why its content permeates so thoroughly throughout the internet.

fun fact one of the world champions in pepper-eating contests is a trans woman and she actually faced significant backlash because people somehow thought she had a biological advantage. to eating spicy pepper

update bc i went back and checked: her name is brianna “the chilli queen” skinner and she set a record in 2017 by slamming back 23 carolina reapers consecutively. she only stopped when told to by the referees, and the next year she stepped down out of boredom. queen

The championship, it should be noted, is unisex. Apparently being a trans woman gives you an innate biological advantage over both cis men and cis women.

The real saw trap is reading an incredibly wrong take about your blorbo and seeing that it’s actually very popular

And I’m not even talking about headcanons or creative writing, but misunderstanding the source material so hard that it’s not even the same character anymore

the funny thing is that i don't think younger people - and i mean those under the age of 40 - really have a grasp on how many of today's issues can be tied back to a disastrous reagan policy:

  1. war on drugs: reagan's aggressive escalation of the war on drugs was a catastrophic policy, primarily targeting minority communities and fueling mass incarceration. the crusade against drugs was more about controlling the Black, Latino and Native communities than addressing the actual problems of drug abuse, leading to a legacy of broken families and systemic racism within the criminal justice system.
  2. deregulation and economic policies: reaganomics was an absolute disaster for the working class. reagan's policies of aggressive tax cuts for the rich, deregulation, and slashing social programs were nothing less than class warfare, deepening income inequality and entrenching corporate greed. these types of policies were a clear message that reagan's america was only for the wealthy elite and a loud "fuck you" to working americans.
  3. environmental policies: despite his reputation being whitewashed thanks to the recovery of the ozone layer, reagan's environmental record was an unmitigated disaster. his administration gutted critical environmental protections and institutions like the EPA, turning a blind eye to pollution and corporate exploitation of natural resources. this blatant disregard for the planet was a clear sign of prioritizing short-term corporate profits over the future of the environment.
  4. AIDS crisis: reagan's gross neglect of the aids crisis was nothing short of criminal and this doesn't even begin to touch on his wife's involvement. his administration's indifference to the plight of the lgbtq+ community during this devastating epidemic revealed a deep-seated bigotry and a complete failure of moral leadership.
  5. mental health: reagan's dismantling of mental health institutions under the guise of 'reform' led directly to a surge in homelessness and a lack of support for those with mental health issues. his policies were cruel and inhumane and showed a personality-defining callous disregard for the most vulnerable in society.
  6. labor and unions: reagan's attack on labor unions, exemplified by his handling of the patco strike, was a blatant assault on workers' rights. his actions emboldened corporations to suppress union activities, leading to a significant erosion of workers' power and rights in the workplace. he was colloquially known as "Ronnie the Union Buster Reagan"
  7. foreign policy and military interventions: reagan's foreign policy, particularly in latin america, was imperialist and ruthless. his administration's support for dictatorships and right-wing death squads under the guise of fighting "communism" showed a complete disregard for human rights and self-determination of other nations.
  8. public health: yes, reagan's agricultural policies actually facilitated the rise of high fructose corn syrup, once again prioritizing corporate profits over public health. this shift in the food industry has had lasting negative impacts on health, contributing to the obesity epidemic and other health issues.
  9. privatization: reagan's push for privatization was a systematic dismantling of public services, transferring wealth and power to private corporations and further eroding the public's access to essential services.
  10. education policies: his approach to education was more of an attack on public education than anything else, gutting funding and promoting policies that undermined equal access to quality education. this was, again, part of a broader agenda to maintain a status quo where the privileged remain in power.

this is just what i could come up with in a relatively short time and i did not even live under this man's presidency. the level at which ronald reagan has broken the united states truly can't be overstated.

A couple of these started earlier (before Nixon, for-profit health insurance was not allowed, and Nixon also started the war on drugs specifically to target minorities and anti-war activists), but Reagan doubled down on them and made them even worse. It was the difference between sliding down the side of a hill and jumping off a cliff.

All my homies hate Reagan

I’ll say it once again: since Reagan, we’ve had three separate times when the Democratic Party has had simultaneous control of the Presidency, the House, and the Senate. Yet all the things Reagan did have remained largely intact. This is because the Democratic Party is under the control of people who admire Reagan and think he was a great guy — every Democratic Presidential nominee starting with Bill Clinton has been a pro-corporate, pro-military neoliberal. (And yes, this includes Obama, who very publicly praised Reagan, and Biden, who basically wants to be Reagan.) If you want Reagan’s influence undone, it is not enough to hate Reagan, you have to hate the people who think he was a positive influence, too — which de facto means both major political parties.
