Chapter 1

Summary: Tav arrives at the Druid Grove, meets Zevlor, Rolan, Cal and Lia, and spends the following tenday getting to know her companions as they ready themselves to confront the goblin camp.

The grove was filled with tieflings who she learned were refugees from the city Elturel - somewhere Tav had visited before The Descent - about 200 miles east of Baldur’s Gate along River Chionthar. After the whole debacle of Elturel falling to the hells and back, the people of the city forced the tiefling residents out, believing the entire thing was their fault. 

The man who led the tiefling refugees, Zevlor, had filled in Tav and her companions, Karlach, Lae’zel, and Gale, after they helped save the grove from an attack by some goblins. He told them the leader of the grove, Kagha, was in the process of forcing the refugees out, claiming it was for the best for those who resided in the grove. She was already in the process of sealing it off from the rest of the world. 

At the request of Zevlor, who just wanted more time to prepare his people for the road to Baldur’s Gate, Tav was currently on her way to speak with Kagha. Tav didn’t have a habit of helping every person in need that she came across, but this time was a little different. She felt for the tieflings - being exiled from safety twice now, and at no fault of their own. Presently, she stood at the table of a merchant, trading everything she had picked up since waking up on the beach for gold and supplies.

Prologue

Gods, the day Tav has had. It was only 19 hours ago that she was settling down to sleep at an inn somewhere just outside of Baldur’s Gate after having fulfilled her latest work contract. Having spent the past few tendays on the road camping alone, only finding an inn every so often, she was happy to be able to bathe in warm water for the first time in who knows how long, and enjoy a fresh, warm meal cooked by someone other than her over something that wasn’t a shitty campfire. It was just past dawn, the sun was still painting the land gold when her head met her pillow for some well-deserved rest. 

She wouldn’t have believed you, would’ve told you to shut up and let her go to sleep, if you said that 19 hours later she’d be in a druid’s grove in the middle of nowhere after waking up on a beach under the wreckage of a mind flayer ship. She’d have said “hah hah, very funny” if you told her she’d have a mind flayer tadpole inserted into her brain and be searching for a cure alongside a muscly tiefling who was essentially on fire, a Githyanki soldier who thought of her as a subordinate, and a wizard that had a lot to say - all who found themselves in the same circumstances as her.

At the inn, she felt the rumbling before anyone else, heard it before anyone else, then saw it before anyone else - the giant alien ship wreaking havoc on Baldur’s Gate. There was nothing to do other than grab her things as fast as possible and either watch her demise as it approached or at least try to find something like a basement or cellar. She didn’t really know the protocol for something like this. She settled on running.

Papa Rolan being literally in awe every time he puts the mittens on his newborn bc he's like oh my god how can fingers be this tiny and precious; then cue the internal cuteness aggression, bro's like raahhh I wanna bite them off ! adorable tiny baby fingers !! But instead he just gives them a bunch of kisses before putting the mittens on

Yes omg I love this question!!! I think they are definitely born with the ability to move their tails, but it's not intentional and control over it is something that comes with time and practice -- like how babies can move their arms and hands and fingers, but do not have good control over them for a while.

I also think they would do some things instinctually, and think about how tief tails reflect their emotions or the tasks they're doing... I think their little baby tails might instinctively wrap around their own leg or go very stiff when they're crying. If their parent is holding them, their tail might find their parent's wrist and wrap around it to keep them close!

Like how parents have to do things to help their baby develop fine motor skills, I could see this being the case with their little tails! Maybe a parent would encourage their child to wrap their tail around the parent's hand or fingers, then gently pull their hand away to test the baby's tail strength and to make sure they're able to put up some resistance to the pulling.

Or when teaching tief babies to crawl, parents might encourage the use of the baby's tail in support and balance! That could also apply to learning how to sit up by themselves and even when they start to walk.

Honestly, I could see him already being like that 😂 He's quite sassy and passive-aggressive, but not always in a super serious way -- so I could definitely see him grumbling to himself like that when he's irritated, or very clearly rolling his eyes, things like that
