Literally the only part of my life that would have to change for monastery living is my stream setup. I don't think they let you stream at the abbey.

How good you are at reading is the upper cap on how good you are at writing.

Would you ever enjoy living in a monastery? I'm thinking about how the (relative) solitude and routine would be nice to some folks but the lack of ability to rainbow your tonsure and have gay sex would probably make it a huge bummer in other ways.

I literally think I was made for monastery life. I already spend most of my time either reading, writing, cleaning, or cooking. I do my best work when I am isolated and calm.

Let's build a giant machine of black iron that people are born and die in forever & it is powered by their blood

Friend of a friend has been getting into "Ley Lines" and "Negative Green". Got sent this book as reference for what they're into: https://cosmosandhistory.org/index.php/journal/article/view/505/838

Curious what the lineage of this sort of stuff was historically, what movements it's related to, etc

Oh this is delightful nonsense. Its a combination of ley lines, pseudo-archeology, and occidental geomancy with a thick new age soup as glue.

what’re your favorite warframes? to play or in general

LAVOS PRIME is my boy. But I enjoy Gauss Prime and tbh? I actually love Umbra. I gravitate towards melee focused builds in games like warframe and Umbra hits that shit for me.

Well now. If you missed the first PHILOSOPHY FRIDAY, don't worry your little head. It was so sucessful, I will be doing ANOTHER this very friday. Drop all of your plans. If you want proper notifications for future streams, you can join the discord here.

A dying Aristotle, temporarily revived by smelling an apple. From The Book of the Apple

From Eisenbibliothek's MS 20 f. 15v.

My notes say "we need about one page on plato" and I wrote almost exactly a page within two characters. Deeply satisfying.

Western Esotericism begins with Plato. Don’t get scared. I am not about to spend the next several pages explaining all of classical philosophy to you. Our focus is more specific. The purpose of this text, dear reader, is to teach you how to approach a text like an esotericist. When faced with an unfamiliar writer, our first goal is to keep an eye out for three things: Style, Epistemology, and Physics. What kind of writer are we dealing with? Where does knowledge come from? What is the world made of? If you understand these three things, you’ve done 80% of the work.  Stylistically, Plato is a trickster. His writing is structured in the form of dialogues. These are extended literary arguments between two characters. Usually, between one of Plato’s students, and Socrates.* He debates questions like What is bravery? What is truth? What is friendship? By the end of the dialogue, the answer is almost always a resounding Who the Hell Knows?

*read, Plato pretending to be Socrates

What is the strangest, most honestly baffling esoteric idea you've encountered in your research. Like, makes you check the translation and be at a loss as to where to even begin type concept?

Honestly the weirdest shit is recent. There was a sweet spot around the early 2000s where people figured out you could pay vanity publishers over the internet. Occult texts are usually odd, but they usually make some sense. There is some shit from that era that is truly incoherent. Like, ufo channeled texts that were then translated into english from spanish and the spanish barely made sense to begin with.

What are some places that one should definitely *not* go to get started with western esoterica?

Anything called like, "The Brotherhood of Cosmic Awakening" or shit like that. Its hard, the occult is by definition mythology-building unconcerned with its own history, so it can be difficult to make anti-recommendations. The best advice I can give is to familiarize yourself with the basics of conspiracy lore and common pseudo-histories. There are plenty of youtube channels that debunk stuff like that.

That said, its kind of a universal experience among the occult-interested that your entry into this whole world won't exactly be historically rigorous. It will be some interesting concept presented in fiction, or some good but outdated occult history like The Golden Bough or anything by Dame Frances Yates.

I think the most useful skill you can develop for exploring the occult is determining what KIND of pseudohistory you're dealing with. A lot of influential occultists created oddball pseudohistories that are essential for understanding their work. Hell, look at Blavatsky, or Marsillio Ficino, even the Late Platonists are guilty of this.

Just, don't go to tiktok and search "occult secrets" or whatever. You'll get a lot of nazis and strange women trying to sell you things, and strange nazi women trying to sell you things.
