📚 QUEERBOOK 2024 is hereee! We made a book by and for LGBTQ+ youth! 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈

Last year, we asked LGBTQ+ youth: what's your idea of a "queer utopia?"

Not gonna lie - with more than 150 bills introduced in 35 states in 2023 that aimed to restrict student access to inclusive and diverse books and other library materials, the theme felt pretty radical.

And you DELIVERED. With the help of our Youth Voices (amazing queer youth activists from across the country), we compiled your amazing submissions of poetry, short essays and letters, visual art, photography, and more into Queerbook 2024. Like a yearbook, it captures what queer youth are feeling, going through, and hoping for - right here, right now across the U.S.

It's also no accident that it's the perfect small-ish size to stash in your locker or backpack so you can crack it open any time you're looking for some queer connection. :3

"The Art of Being a Woman" by Anna J, for Queerbook 2024

Queerbook artist feature for you! This piece can be found on page 66 of Queerbook 2024.

Anna (she/her) says, "I am a 21-year-old senior in college in Mississippi. As most people know, the southern states are not the most inclusive places for the LGBTQ+ community. After coming to college I noticed that my community lacked a representation of the LGBTQ+ community, and I wanted to change that. My piece shows femininity, rebirth, the power of being a woman, the beautiful aspects of being a woman, the way women stand together and are always working in unison, and the way that all are welcome in my eyes."

I did a thing with some transphobic comments that I had the misfortune of seeing with my own two eyes on TDoV.

There are screenshots below, the usernames and profile pictures have been covered up with colorful scribbles, as well as most of the text of the comment, leaving behind only a few words with a very different meaning than the original intent of the comments.

(you are not your DNA You can be transgender)

(Respect and love means affirming someone's truth)

(Biological sex is a mistake.)

"Hope in the Grocery Store" by Cricket R., for Queerbook 2024

Image

Queerbook artist feature for you! This piece can be found on page 96 of Queerbook 2024.

Cricket (he/they) says, "My trips to the grocery store beg to differ from the scary world on the news. I see an openly, visually queer person every single time. Many of them are young high school and middle school students. Every time I see them with their Pride pins and queer-coded outfits, I smile and feel so much joy. When I see these kids, often in groups, being happily, openly queer, it brings me so much joy and hope. My utopia is a world where every town, every city, every country, is safe enough for these wonderful kids to exist fully and openly every day and everywhere."

It is so so important to show that queer people have always existed and are allowed to live long, happy lives. Young queer people–especially those in conservative areas–need to know that being queer is not a death sentence. Despite the many struggles we have faced, throughout history there have always been queer lives filled with joy and love. and you will find yours.

Jordana LeSesne (1.8.7) is a Black trans woman. She is widely regarded as the top drum and bass producer in the world. Without her, we wouldn’t have electronic music as we know it today.

She came out in 1998 and went on to get a contract with the Syfy Channel, be profiled in Rolling Stone, and have several albums chart in the Top 25.

She also mixed the original music for the FREE Cece documentary!

Pride is all year round, not just June!

If this is something you want physically printed on a sticker, t-shirt or pin badge to keep handy, consider having a look over here - you get something pretty and I get a little profit, too!

And if you're super cool and just want to support more of this kind of thing without getting a tangible reward, I also have a Ko-fi!

I found out about box theory recently and I found it really neat.

But I don't find it useful personally. The imagery of the box and the idea that the box is individualized don't work for me at all.

So, I thought I would share my personal way of conceptualizing labels.

Essentially, you view all the LGBTQ+ labels as tools in a gigantic toolbox.

You can go through it and grab the tool you want to complete the project you are doing.

Two people may grab the exact same tool for projects that could not be more different.

Two people may grab completely different tools for exactly the same project.

And, of course, two people could grab exactly the same tools for exactly the same project.

And any variation/combination of any of those.

The important thing to remember is that there is no universally correct tool to use. Grab a hammer to unscrew a screw. Grab a screwdriver to remove a nail. Use a tape measure to etch a piece of art. Use 20 different tools for one task. Go wild. If it works best for you, it is the best tool for the job, even if other people would never use it that way. You're the one doing the job, so use the tool(s) that help you.

If someone criticizes the way that you are completing your own personal project, then they are just being annoying and pretentious.

Labels are just tools of self-description. Mix and match them. Use them in unconventional ways. If anyone cares, it doesn't matter, because the labels you use are for you, not them.

Why is this so 🤯

I was originally planning on holding off sharing this until June, but then decided to hell with that; why wait?
