Bagginshield version: Not to be a downer, not to bring the sads, gonna talk in code here for those of us who might be sensitive just gonna say… BUT AU where three people whose names rhyme with uhhhh Leelee and uhhhhh Pillbow die but Thorin lives. So Thorin gets a really visible tattoo of three roses as a symbol of those three.. people… who were so important to him. 

He is ashamed of his actions that may have led to his loss but he is never ashamed of those three… people.. he lost. -_-

Excuse me while I go ugly cry and kick my brain for going there.

Thorinduil version: Thorin’s hair and beard have turned snow white. It happened so quickly. He had thought he’d have so much longer with Thranduil but… he knew his time would come very soon. Thorin and Thranduil picked out a tattoo to symbolize their love (and after much sqabbling, tantrums, and a thrown vase) and they decided upon roses. (Thorin veto’d Thranduil’s initial… LEWD suggestion. -_- )

The tattoo is so Thorin can bring a bit of their love with him to Erebor when his body is interred there.

*SOBS* Okay, but srsly. I spend so much time imagining what the funeral procession from Mirkwood to Erebor would be like and how Thranduil would be trying not to lose it in front of the dwarves… 

Jfc. More ugly crying? Why do I do this to myself? Wrrrryyyyyyyy?

More Bagginshield: Ooh or maybe Thorin was kidnapped by ferocious hobbits and they have decided to make him one of their own? The Thain declared Thorin would belong to the rose clan, on account of his being royalty, and that is also the clan Bilbo belongs to.

HA! No ugly crying this time. Fierce flower warrior hobbit clans are fun!

Honestly, half the time when I draw something I have two or three or more stories going on in my head about what is going on. I just really wanted to draw Thorin with a rose tattoo. Oh! And I adapted the pattern on his collar from a Russian folk art design.

My normal Pentel 0.3mm pencil with HB lead on Paris Bleedproof paper. I actually drew this because I accidentally bought the wrong coloured red ink so I thought I’d draw something with flowers so I could use it up.

Hobbit sass is my favourite type of sass! I mean, Thorin’s a bit… well, Bilbo’s just so… cute? It’s hard to take him seriously when he gets all worked up like this! But because Thorin is a good king he tries his best to take Bilbo seriously.

What if hobbits were potato people? I was doodling this pic of Thorin and… well. What about a modern AU where Thorin is a personal trainer and Bilbo is a potato person? So I drew Bilbo as a potato person. And laughed and laughed and laughed.

Then I was thinking, no wait, this could work.

Yavanna is wise and caring and powerful but… she’s a little hard of hearing! When she caught wind that the race of Man would, eventually, rule Middle Earth she heard the race of Yam and so… she made hobbits out of yams.

These quiet, gentle folk live underground (omg just like tubers!) for the most part. Sometimes they build above ground houses with straw insulation (omg! you can grow tubers buried in straw above ground!). They’re excellent gardeners and are very good at hiding (omg! Just like… no wait, I got nothing here). They also have hairy little foot-poofs. JUST LIKE POTA– okay, i’ll stop.

FOOT-POOFS!

I could see other PotatoAU story-lines such as:

  • Thorin is an architect and Bilbo is a potato person
  • Thorin survives the Battle of Five Armies and Bilbo is a potato person
  • Thorin marries Bilbo and Bilbo becomes the royal potato consort
  • Bofur is a renowned stone whisperer and Bilbo is a potato person
  • Hobbits are potato people and dwarves are cabbage people and elves are asparagus people and humans are ears of corn. I dunno. I like the imagery of the Riders of Rohan being these ears of corn with flowing silky cornsilk ponytails.

IT WORKS IN SO MANY SITUATIONS!

Why is a potato stealing my treasure? XD This is the most fun I’ve had drawing in a long time!

These were the first things I doodled on my new pad of Paris Bleedproof paper! Omg. If you meatspace ink your work you need to try this paper! When you ink the pens gliiiiiide across the paper. It’s so lovely! 0.3mm Pentel mechanical pencil with HB lead. Inked with 0.3mm and 0.1mm Staedtler pigment liners. Coloured in Photoshop These were all drawn on the same sheet of paper.

Unless I miscounted, this is the 25th art post I’ve made since I started! I’m pretty proud of myself. That is more art than I have posted in the past six years!

It’s getting easier to ‘ink’ using Photoshop. I’m really getting used to the tablet and pretty soon I may even try *gasp* drawing directly in Photoshop instead of drawing with pencil on paper and scanning it. I dunno.. I do like working off-line. I spend so much time on a computer it’s nice to step away from a screen.

*Foofs Aggressively* Yeah, that’s a foofy raven. All foofin’. Ridin’ around on Thorin’s shoulder and floofy-foofin’ at any elves she sees. While I was eating breakfast this morning I also wrote a Bagginshield fic that features this raven.

Just sort of mucking about with different ways to ink and colour and trying out  different brushes. The original pencil sketch was from 2016 and is one of my first attempts at drawing Thorin. (Which is why it was never properly finished off. First efforts are always a bit embarrassing. XD) This is just a screen shot of the upper-right corner of the full sketch.

Revolutionary Dwarf Thorin: Thorin is the new warrior at an exclusive training ground where all battle to win the favour of the Rose Bride! Plot twist! Upon reaching the special battle arena the very first time, a strange transformation overcomes Thorin and rose tattoos bloom on Thorin’s skin! THORIN IS THE REAL ROSE BRIDE! Now Thorin has to fend off advances and manipulations to locate the jewelled heart (stolen! gasp!) which may hold the key to unlocking Thorin’s missing memories and what had happened all those years ago. 

(Okay, so I veered a bit off-plot. XD)

Thorin ½: Young Prince Thorin and his companion Dwalin were training near the forest of Mirkwood when they each fell into enchanted springs! Now, when drenched with cold water, Thorin becomes a girl and Dwalin becomes a black bear! Drench them with warm water, and they return to their former selves. Cursed, they travel Middle-Earth looking for a cure until they come to live among hobbits… who are rumoured to have the cure!

(Pfft. XD Omg! Dain turns into a pig!)

Or how about Thorin is tired after a long day’s work and is falling asleep. He’s very secretive about how he got the rose tattoo. All anybody knows is he’d gone off to work in Bree, got lost, and returned two months later well-fed and sporting a floral tattoo. All of Ered Lund is gossiping about it but Thorin refuses to give details. Then one day, dwarf traders return with a hobbit in their cart! A hobbit who demands to see Thorin! A hobbit… who has the same tattoo as Thorin. :O Dun dun dunnnnn!

Yup. That scarlet ink really does like to come off as berry pink if you only use a thin layer. The roses and the decorative detail in Thorin’s collar are the same ink! The roses were painted with a small brush. The collar I used a nib to apply the ink.

Hobbit. Hockey. Okay, but hear me out. Instead of fighting battles with swords and stuff, the major players in Middle Earth settle scores with hockey! Feanor and his sons (The Feanorean Furies???) were the first winners of the Simaril Cup but it was lost when they were defeated the next season by the Melkor Maia. (idk! I’ve just begun to scratch the surface of The Silmarillion!) They swore they’d get the cup back but, yeah, nope. Never happened.

Currently the biggest teams are:

The Erebor Ravens, Mirkwood Elks, Rivendell River Falls, and the Iron Hills War Boars. The cities of Men rarely rank in the Simaril Cup Playoffs and often the best referees are men!

Hobbits, alas, do not play ice hockey as it would require wearing ice skates but you should see them play field hockey. They play dirty. 

EDIT: Eee! My friend @nlwart​ made a team banner for the Erebor Ravens! This is our first time collaborating on an art idea!

Pretty obviously this is pencil on paper. Not even a very special pencil except that it’s a pure black ninja pencil! Instead of using a pigment liner to ink this, I might dig out my old nibs/brushes, see if I have any inkwells that haven’t dried up and dig deep to remember how to ink without splattering myself. XD Oh yeah, because I used paper with a bit of tooth this nib experiment is likely going to be a bit splattery. Doh!

I also imagine he was resistant to taking on a pokémon… he has so many other responsibilities and he might have been afraid he couldn’t give a pokémon the sort of attention it requires. 

Finally, after the urging of friends and family, he gave in and he’s never been happier! Frankly, I think he picked a growlithe because it’s mohawk and loyalty and fierceness reminds him of Dwalin. XD

I tried out a new brush but I’m not 100% sure I’m digging it. I’ll try it out on a couple more pictures but I think I haven’t found my forever brush yet.Hm. I feel like the pokéball should’ve looked more dwarfish. Instead I drew it by referring to Pokémon Go. I feel like in Middle Earth they might not even have pokéballs! Oh well! next picture won’t have a pokéball in it!

The Moth Crown. I have a real weakness for Thorinduil. Call it a hateship if you like but there’s something about royal hotheads clashing that does it for me! Maybe all that fighting makes the gifts and soft words later all the more sweet? This was a warm-up sketch of Thranduil wearing a crown and ring Thorin made for him. The crown is supposed to be Thorin’s interpretation of a moth. Set with big cabochon-cut jewels.

Random HB pencil on photocopy paper. Haha! Favourite erasers? My clicky Sanford Tuff Stuff ™ Eraser Stick, a Pentel hi-polymer eraser, and the nubby end of a pencil. Because this was a warm-up sketch the point of it isn’t to erase but to let the lines do what they please but I still couldn’t resist cleaning up a bit.

Teeny Tiny Introductions. The smoller Thorin is the ruder he seems! He’s not tiny and cute! He’s tiny and rude! When you’re that smol you have to always be on the defensive! You can’t see it, really, but in the last panel Thorin is giving Bilbo a THUMB DOWN!
