Teeny Tiny Arrival. This comic series is totally going to be self-indulgent. Sorry I’m not-sorry! 

Part 1 - Part 2 - Part 3

I already blathered on about the process behind this comic at great length. Thank you to the few patient people who actually read it. XD I sort of wish I still had my tone library. Maybe I do on an external drive someplace. But I am also enjoying just playing with black and white. OH!! And the title for the comic uses a font called ‘Bilbo’ which just happened to be on my computer because I installed all of the Google Fonts!

Teeny Tiny Thorin

Today I don’t have a single sketch to update with because I’ve been pushing myself to try new art techniques and make yonkoma about Teeny Tiny Thorin.  So far I have 11 strips planned and the first one will be posted next Tuesday! (It’s pretty much done but I’m futzing with the art, still.)

So what is a yonkoma? If you didn’t click the link to the wiki above I’ll tell you. It’s a four panel, vertically-aligned gag comic. I used to make these so I’m already familiar with the rhythm of thinking in four panels. It can be a bit of a challenge compared to regular comics! 

Sort of like short story writing compared to novel writing.

I’m not strictly following the traditional Kishōtenketsu story structure because in a lot of these comics I’m mirroring the movie just with the twist/gag of Thorin being teeny-tiny. 

I thought it might be interesting to post some of my progress and sketches today as it is Sketch Thursday? Warning, this gets long and there’s a lot of pics.

Teeny Tiny Thorin

Teeny Tiny Dinner. It isn’t so much that Thorin is rude it’s just that the idea of a napkin being a family keepsake is very foreign to him. When you’re teeny tiny your boots are very precious! It isn’t as if any old cobbler could make you a new pair and if you take them off and put them at the front door there’s a very good chance they’ll be carried off by mice!

Once is quite enough to go hunting mice in your stockinged feet. Thank you very much.

Bwahahaha! I am enjoying creating these teeny tiny Thorin comics so much! I don’t know if it’s clear but in the second panel, Thorin is kicking a scone in half. And in the last panel, he is wiping his feet on the napkin. XD

Teeny Tiny Introductions. The smoller Thorin is the ruder he seems! He’s not tiny and cute! He’s tiny and rude! When you’re that smol you have to always be on the defensive! You can’t see it, really, but in the last panel Thorin is giving Bilbo a THUMB DOWN!

Do you have any teeny tiny Thorin requests?! Maybe teeny tiny Bilbo? At this point, I’m just trying to get some practice in on the scale of teeny tiny characters but my brain is preventing me from coming up with any doodle ideas.

Hobbit sass is my favourite type of sass! I mean, Thorin’s a bit… well, Bilbo’s just so… cute? It’s hard to take him seriously when he gets all worked up like this! But because Thorin is a good king he tries his best to take Bilbo seriously.

Hobbit. Hockey. Okay, but hear me out. Instead of fighting battles with swords and stuff, the major players in Middle Earth settle scores with hockey! Feanor and his sons (The Feanorean Furies???) were the first winners of the Simaril Cup but it was lost when they were defeated the next season by the Melkor Maia. (idk! I’ve just begun to scratch the surface of The Silmarillion!) They swore they’d get the cup back but, yeah, nope. Never happened.

Currently the biggest teams are:

The Erebor Ravens, Mirkwood Elks, Rivendell River Falls, and the Iron Hills War Boars. The cities of Men rarely rank in the Simaril Cup Playoffs and often the best referees are men!

Hobbits, alas, do not play ice hockey as it would require wearing ice skates but you should see them play field hockey. They play dirty. 

EDIT: Eee! My friend @nlwart​ made a team banner for the Erebor Ravens! This is our first time collaborating on an art idea!

Pretty obviously this is pencil on paper. Not even a very special pencil except that it’s a pure black ninja pencil! Instead of using a pigment liner to ink this, I might dig out my old nibs/brushes, see if I have any inkwells that haven’t dried up and dig deep to remember how to ink without splattering myself. XD Oh yeah, because I used paper with a bit of tooth this nib experiment is likely going to be a bit splattery. Doh!

Back to the basics. I’m still fairly new to digital art. I’ve been enjoying it but I’ve really missed the thrill of inking with a nib and ink. It’s been a bit of a re-learning curve. You can see the difference between the picture of young Thorin being a brat and older Thorin in the photo beneath it. It’s taken a few practice pictures but I’m finally starting to remember how to ink with nibs!

Holy crap. I wrote a novel about inking with nibs below the cut.
