Hobbit Headles. This line art has been sitting around since February and I’m just finishing it up, now. I wanted to draw even shorter hobbits and dwarves and the first thing that leapt to mind was taking away their torsos. XD Don’t judge meeeee!

Hobbit sass is my favourite type of sass! I mean, Thorin’s a bit… well, Bilbo’s just so… cute? It’s hard to take him seriously when he gets all worked up like this! But because Thorin is a good king he tries his best to take Bilbo seriously.
Middle Earth Crossing. So I have been playing Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp and imagining Hobbit characters being in the game! And as it is Thursday which means I post sketches and unfinished work, here are some rough sketches of what that might look like! I’m hoping to do some more of these but finished and coloured.
My favourite part was putting Thorin in a dress which was the only way to approximate his outfit! Haha! Bilbo’s foot fuzz is just lines.
Fuck that Floral Shit. Smol!Thorin (he’s too big to be teeny tiny) was totally down for a bath until Bilbo pulled out some floral (lavender) scented soap. DWARVES DO NOT SMELL LIKE FLOWERS! WEED-EATING ELVES SMELL LIKE FLOWERS! Get that weed-eater pit scrubber away from Thorin! Just bring him a rock from the garden and he can take it from there!
Bilbo: Don’t you want to smell nice, Thorin?
Thorin: Never once in my life have I thought flowers smell ‘nice’.
Bilbo: Come on, now. This is the only bathing soap I have and you must use soap to get clean!
Thorin: How about I eat that rotted bar of flower compost and crap something nice for you to smell?
Bilbo: OH!! That DOES it. You’re not getting your clothes back until you properly scrub with soap!
Thorin: I WOULD RATHER MARCH NAKED THROUGH HOBBITON THAN SMELL OF FLOWERS!
Bilbo: THAT CAN BE ARRANGED, YOUR MAJESTY!

Teeny Tiny Introductions. The smoller Thorin is the ruder he seems! He’s not tiny and cute! He’s tiny and rude! When you’re that smol you have to always be on the defensive! You can’t see it, really, but in the last panel Thorin is giving Bilbo a THUMB DOWN!
Oh man. I completely underestimated the amount of work that would go into this strip. At least I’ve established just how teeny tiny little Thorin really is!
Teeny Tiny Dinner. It isn’t so much that Thorin is rude it’s just that the idea of a napkin being a family keepsake is very foreign to him. When you’re teeny tiny your boots are very precious! It isn’t as if any old cobbler could make you a new pair and if you take them off and put them at the front door there’s a very good chance they’ll be carried off by mice!
Once is quite enough to go hunting mice in your stockinged feet. Thank you very much.
Bwahahaha! I am enjoying creating these teeny tiny Thorin comics so much! I don’t know if it’s clear but in the second panel, Thorin is kicking a scone in half. And in the last panel, he is wiping his feet on the napkin. XD
Today I don’t have a single sketch to update with because I’ve been pushing myself to try new art techniques and make yonkoma about Teeny Tiny Thorin. So far I have 11 strips planned and the first one will be posted next Tuesday! (It’s pretty much done but I’m futzing with the art, still.)
So what is a yonkoma? If you didn’t click the link to the wiki above I’ll tell you. It’s a four panel, vertically-aligned gag comic. I used to make these so I’m already familiar with the rhythm of thinking in four panels. It can be a bit of a challenge compared to regular comics!
Sort of like short story writing compared to novel writing.
I’m not strictly following the traditional Kishōtenketsu story structure because in a lot of these comics I’m mirroring the movie just with the twist/gag of Thorin being teeny-tiny.
I thought it might be interesting to post some of my progress and sketches today as it is Sketch Thursday? Warning, this gets long and there’s a lot of pics.

Bilbo was declared dead while he was away in the Hobbit (and had to do a bunch of paperwork to get declared alive again) but there’s no indication he was formally declared dead after leaving the Shire, even though most people assumed he had died.
Therefore I posit: having a missing person declared dead in the Shire requires the consent of their next of kin. Whoever Bilbo’s next of kin was at the time of the Hobbit (possibly Otho? I’m not sure) had him declared dead at the first opportunity but Frodo refused to ever do it.
Frodo had anxious hobbit bureaucrats knocking on his door every couple of years like ‘Mr Baggins… blease… it’s been 10 years… he was eleventy-one… can we fill out his death certificate yet’ and Frodo was like ‘absolutely not’.
Early on he genuinely couldn’t bring himself too but after a while it was more that he enjoyed irritating the local magistrate’s office than anything else.
I raise you: the hobbitish bureaucracy has no means to re-declare someone dead. They had no precedent to declare someone who was once-dead dead again. They would need the Thain, the Mayor, and the Master of Buckland to agree to changing the statute, and since the Thain and the Master are too amused by the whole henclucking that they haven’t gotten round to it just yet.
I’m upping the stakes with: last time Bilbo was declared dead when he was, in fact, not dead, they removed the law stating that you can have someone declared dead without a body, so when Bilbo left (happily aware of this legal loophole and snickering) he could never become legally dead again.
I am loving the implication here that Bilbo can literally never die in the eyes of the law. He’d love that.

a hobbit child misinterprets this and lies awake at night worrying that Mad Baggins is still out there and will appear in their room without warning
Alternatively: the laws for declaring somebody dead if they’re missing for long enough are still in place, but the magistrates are just refusing to enforce them in this particular case.
After all, last time they declared Bilbo Baggins dead— which involved filling out all the paperwork necessary to declare somebody dead without a body— he had the rudeness to show up again, forcing them to do a lot more paperwork, and this time with an indignant Bilbo having a go at them while they did it.
As a result, the magistrates have decided that they’re not going to declare Bilbo Baggins dead a second time unless they have a body, a coroners reprt explaining the cause of death, and a three day wake to make sure that he doesn’t get up and walk away again.
Centuries later, hobbit parents tell their children that Mad Baggins is forever gone from the shire— at least until the day when somebody is stupid enough to declare him legally dead, at which point legend states that he will immediately come marching back, demanding an explanation.

What if hobbits were potato people? I was doodling this pic of Thorin and… well. What about a modern AU where Thorin is a personal trainer and Bilbo is a potato person? So I drew Bilbo as a potato person. And laughed and laughed and laughed.
Then I was thinking, no wait, this could work.
Yavanna is wise and caring and powerful but… she’s a little hard of hearing! When she caught wind that the race of Man would, eventually, rule Middle Earth she heard the race of Yam and so… she made hobbits out of yams.
These quiet, gentle folk live underground (omg just like tubers!) for the most part. Sometimes they build above ground houses with straw insulation (omg! you can grow tubers buried in straw above ground!). They’re excellent gardeners and are very good at hiding (omg! Just like… no wait, I got nothing here). They also have hairy little foot-poofs. JUST LIKE POTA– okay, i’ll stop.

These were the first things I doodled on my new pad of Paris Bleedproof paper! Omg. If you meatspace ink your work you need to try this paper! When you ink the pens gliiiiiide across the paper. It’s so lovely! 0.3mm Pentel mechanical pencil with HB lead. Inked with 0.3mm and 0.1mm Staedtler pigment liners. Coloured in Photoshop These were all drawn on the same sheet of paper.
