For track and field, a little ego helps get you across the line. You have to be daring to step onto the starting line. You have to come with the mentality that you are the best and maintain this attitude from start to finish. The ego, Id, superego is part of everyone’s make up according to science. It’s there to protect us. But sometimes it can get in our way, stop us from advancing, trying, going after what we want. Sometimes that same internal push that dared us to run and find joy in praise is that same deterrent that acknowledges naysaying what ifs and forces you to back off. The ego is all about itself, protecting itself.
In these times, remember to be humble. Remember your goal and how far you have become. Show gratitude for your gifts (talents, coaches, teammates, parents, fans, competitors, events, etc.) and remind yourself of what drew you to track in the first place.
