I’m so sick of all these ‘edgy’ artists making pieces that depict us as ‘too sucked into our phones’ and isolated from the world around us.
How about art that celebrates that I am connected instantly to people around the world… that I always felt alone and isolated in my interests, but with the swipe of a screen I can talk with someone on the opposite side of the world about things we both love.
How about how I can simultaneously chat with someone in Australia, and Costa Rica or with friends in the UK and France and California, and we can come together and share in what we love… when just twenty years ago we never would have known the others existed.
Where’s the art talking about that? About how technology is connecting us, helping us find friends and social and support networks that literally could never have existed at any other time in all of human history.
Not to mention the giant amount of disabled people who would not be able to communicate or socialize without the help of technology or social media. If it wasn’t for the internet, I would be alone in almost every sense of the word. I would not have support, I would not be able to learn about myself and the world, I wouldn’t have such a wonderful network of people to talk to when I’m sick in the middle of the night and feel alone. Technology is absolutely incredible and basically a miracle for so many.
