#donald trump #60 minutesIn the online discussions about Donald Trump and Joe Arpaio and their crimes against humanity, I’ve heard a lot of people argue “too bad, they broke the law!”, as if illegal immigrants were monsters who deserved whatever happened to them.
Leaving aside the monstrous idea that criminals deserve whatever abuse they get, illegal immigration is a misdemeanor. It’s as much of a crime as shoplifting. And Unlawful Presence isn’t technically a crime at all. The only punishment is a bus across the border.
In a two-page memo provided to the Washington Post, Donald Trump has finally elaborated on how he would make Mexico pay for the border wall even if the nation refuses. He’d present two options: “Make a one-time payment of $5-10 billion” or he’ll halt remittances sent back home by Mexican immigrants living in the U.S. (an estimated $24 billion). Is that even legal?

I’d like to take a moment to discuss why Donald Trump scares the bejeezus out of me.
All the usual reasons, of course; he’s an awful human being who would be an awful president in a lot of ways. But there’s one reason that seems to have flown under the radar. Ironically, it’s something that Trump apparently believes to be a genuinely good idea that really will help the country, which illustrates why the idea that knowing how to run a business means you know how to run a country is total nonsense.
Trump has stated that, if elected President, he will negotiate with America’s creditors to get them to accept lower payments. This is sadly common in the business world, and it has made Trump himself very rich – he’ll leverage a property or business to the hilt, then have it declare Chapter 11 bankruptcy so it can keep operating while he negotiates with his creditors, who accept much lower payments because at least they get something. If that sounds like cheating people out of money he owes them to you, then you were paying attention.
This works for a businessman, but there are three reasons it would be disastrous for a country:
First, despite what panicky headlines may have led you to believe, most of the US National Debt is held by US citizens – something like 66%, as of September 2014. People and businesses buy US Treasury Securities, which are paid back in a certain number of years with a certain amount of interest. They do this because it’s a very safe investment, better than money in the bank in some ways. Your investment may lose value, depending on interest and inflation, but you will always get your money back, plus interest. What this means is that by forcing these people to take lower payments, Donald Trump would be hurting US businesses and investors. A lot.
Perhaps more important, it would mean that US Debt isn’t a safe investment anymore. Suddenly, there’s a lot less people willing to lend us money, and the interest rates are much higher.
Worst of all is what would happen to our money. You see, our money isn’t backed by gold or silver or anything like that anymore. It’s backed by the full faith and credit of the US government. And if that faith and credit proves to be worthless? So is our money…which happens to be the dominant reserve currency for the entire world.
In short, Trump’s plan would unleash a global financial crisis that would make 1929 look like a lost golden age.
I repeat: you cannot run a country like you run a business, and you must not elect a president who thinks you can.
