my brother (hes 14) is austistic and he doesnt really ever have a full grasp of things people say to him. how could i tell him im a transguy in way he'll get it? i dont want to talk down to him, i just want to says things in a way he'll understand

Devon says:

Try looking at ways that he learns other stuff. All Autistic people are different so it’s hard to say what will help him understand best!

Here are some ideas that would help me learn stuff (I’m Autistic).

  • A visual diagram of gender. There’s the genderbread person, which I am definitely not a fan of, but it does the job for some people. TW for very binary language and ideology in the link. You could print out the diagram and mark where you fall on it. You can also make your own diagram!
  • A video of you coming out. It’s sometimes harder for me to understand stuff when people tell it to me in person because I have to process what they’re saying, what my body language is, what their body language is, what I should say immediately after, etc etc etc. So, a video of you coming out can remove some of those obstacles.
    • You could say in it exactly what you would say to anyone else that you would come out to, and maybe answer questions that you’ve gotten. If he has trouble processing sound/talking, you should add captions to the video. You can privately post a youtube video and add captions to it.
  • A video that someone else made explaining trans stuff. I honestly can’t find any great videos right now. Maybe I’ll make one and post it in the future! No promises. You could show him a video (if you can find one) that explains what it means to be a trans guy and then you only have to tell him that you are a trans guy, and not explain it.
  • A coming out letter. You could write a letter to him coming out. This removes the same face-to-face obstacle that a video of you coming out does. I could help draft a letter to him, if you send an ask to this blog with more details and such! (If you start the ask with my name I am way more likely to see it!)

I hope some of this was helpful!!
