MORE CELLULOID THOUGHTS. Of all the actresses from Philippine Cinema’s Golden Age, Lolita Rodriguez towered above the rest by my book. The first time I saw her onscreen was in Lino Brocka’s “Ina Ka Ng Anak Mo” with another thespian, Nora Aunor. It was like a grand battle of two amazons on screen as each actress used everything they got to dimensionalize their characters. Sheer pleasure to watch - restrained acting from two generations of actresses. After that I couldn’t get enough of her – Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang, Ina, Kapatid, Anak, the atmospheric Tatlo, Dalawa, Isa and many more of her films from the 1950s to the 1960s which I caught on reruns. In 2006 at 76, she posed for an interview at her home in California (right photo), still beautiful and looked at least a decade younger. Today Lolita is 85 years old and we look at her body of work (from 1961 to 1968 she would do an average of 4 movies per year!) with fondness and gratitude.

RIP Lolita Rodriguez, you will be missed.
