BBC6Music have joined up with Hype Machine for a special show counting down the top 25 artists of 2012 so far in a show airing Sunday June 24th on BBC6Music (for more info go here). As part of this I’ve been asked to pick my top three artists so far in 2012 and here they are…
The Neighbourhood
When I first heard “Sweater Weather” its safe to say I was instantly hooked. As soon as that initial hip hop beat started mixed in with the indie vocals I knew I was in for something special. Full of catchy hooks mixed together with hip hop, indie and melancholy cool their debut EP I’m Sorry was so incredibly impressive that it got tongues wagging on all sides of the pond proving that 2012 will make you say…well, there goes The Neighbourhood.
Seasfire
These four Bristolian boys have had quite a big 2012 already with Maida Vale sessions, and airtime on Radio 1. Bringing together that lo fi mysterious edge that has brought them favourable comparisons to indie rnb golden child The Weeknd along with thought provoking and abstract vocals in the same vein as Radiohead, Seasfire have quickly become one of the UK’s best new prospects.
Jessie Ware
Nostalgia is everywhere in music at the moment, looking back is so hot right now. Jessie Ware channels the spirit of Sade into garage/80s rnb/trip hop influenced tracks and does it so very well. With a lot of loving coming her way from Radio 1, Ware (who has previously collaborated with SBTRKT) is finally getting the credit she deserves and with tracks like “Running” and “Wildest Moments” mainstream success is just ahead.
