Though Judy originally tried to get Cary Grant for the part of fading alcoholic movie star Norman Maine, she became fast-friends with Mason when he was cast in the role instead. When Garland passed away fifteen years later at the age of 47, James gave the eulogy at her funeral, honoring her memory by eloquently stating: “Judy’s great gift was that she could wring tears out of hearts of rock.
She gave so richly and so generously
that there was no currency in which to repay her.”
