I love David Burke for being the dorky, a bit sassy Watson, for cheering Holmes up, for his enthusiasm and honest curiosity and Edward Hardwicke for his calmness, composure, life experience and professional expertise so important in Holmes’ later adventures. And for his delicacy and subtle smile. I think they were both excellent and very apt portrayals and I wouldn’t exchange one for the other.

I agree so much with holmesandwhatson above, that they were both excellent in the role of Watson at the respective times they played him. I’m putting mine under a cut since it got a bit long with the few gifs I added.

“the cracks in the marble” as in the original stories that make you feel like the characters are real, Jeremy’s portrayal of Holmes feels so human, so complex but real, I love his sudden laughs, the lip quirks, all the emotions expressed just with the eyes, his changes of mood and Watson knowing them, the way he holds and touches things, like in the end of The Six Napoleons when he’s setting everything to break the bust, the way he puts the tablecloth and the small black cloth square, and then places the bust with all the delicacy… and about favorite outfit, thanks for giving me the perfect excuse to put this gif here:

The Naval Treaty is a great one for outfits all around :) And I agree, his grace is amazing! As for @granada-brett-crumbs, to be honest I was waiting for you or @tremendousdetectivetheorist to pick this outfit ;) But I love the cracks in the marble. He’s human and has such a delicate heart and yeah…which brings me on to my next post, actually.

Oh yes, forever agreeing on his delicious suits in The Naval Treaty! I’ll take this as an opportunity to add this gif from @granada-brett-crumbs:

I’d also like to give an honorable mention to his dressing gown and purple scarf in The Blue Carbuncle, cos, well, Jeremy Jammies and bed head! It’s hard to choose a favorite thing, but I’ll talk about his voice if I may (though I feel unworthy, lol). :> His voice is frankly the sexiest voice I’ve ever heard, clear as a bell and with a wide range of high to low pitch, which he controls quite well to emphasize his points in speech. There’s a quality of water in his voice, most noticeable when in friendly conversation and when he gets sing-songy. (When he says “Full voice” to the guys saying/shouting “fire” in The Norwood Builder I smile, thinking of the book “Full Voice” by voice coach Barbara McAfee, and her theory of 5 elements present in our voices, fire being one). And though I think Jeremy’s natural voice was light & airy he made his voice more firm and earthy to play Holmes. In an interview he named his voice as his greatest weakness (but what he doesn’t realize is that his voice is really MY greatest weakness, my gaaaawd). He might have said that because of his speech impediment he had, and all the training he had to do after having his tongue clipped and relearning to talk. Since he had to do so much work on his speech which was seen as a flaw–it became a great strength in my opinion.
