In the Bronx, New York, the very first homeless shelter specifically for LGBT young adults will be opening in December.
Run by Project Renewal, the shelter will offer counseling, transgender-inclusive medical services, an onsite psychiatrist, and a coordinator to help residents get healthcare, change their legal names and genders, and other processes, as well as 80 beds. The shelter is geared toward adults ages 21-30.
“Single adult shelters are too dangerous for LGBT youth,” said Councilman Ritchie Torres (D-Bronx). “If you’re a transgender [young adult] who’s been evicted from your home by your own parents, going into a single adult shelter could do more harm than good.” […]
“Tragically, a disproportionate number of LGBT youth experience homelessness at some point in their lives,” said Mayor de Blasio’s spokeswoman Aja Worthy-Davis. “This administration has funded over 750 beds for runaway and homeless youth because we believe it’s vital to protect and provide for our young population, and today we go even further to ensure our kids have the housing and services they need to thrive as their true selves.”
The city already has shelters for gay young people up to age 24, according to the Department of Homeless Services, but no facilities for the older age group.
This is a historically underserved area of the city where there’s still a lot of need and not a lot of resources. Well done, New York.
