A/N: Okay I’m so sorry for lagging behind!! I’ve been super busy with school related projects, but I did catch up on the latest episode of SVU! So glad to see Mikey back xx
The secret little bubble that you and Mike Dodds had been living in, popped.
It all started out like most days when you and Mike were alone in the precinct for a few minutes. The rest of the squad had gone out for investigations, and you two were left with the paperwork. You didn’t mind it though; with Mike right next to you to chat with and you both playing footsy under the table, you enjoyed the moment you spent together.
Yet this day wasn’t like the others; the case you guys were filing was one of the worst cases in your work ever. A man, wanting to keep his bloodline “pure" impregnated his whole family. Even his two young daughters, and when questioned he gave no guilt whatsoever.
“Christ.” Mike breathed in as you both examined the photos of the son in the family, who was barely a teen and the man beat him blue. “This guy’s the definition of scum.”
“Disgusting.” You agreed. When you glanced up from the file you saw Mike stare at the pictures; the little boy was barely a teen yet he was malnourished, and the bruises on his skin were so distinctive compared to the paleness of his complexion. Mike stared at the picture, and you could tell he was taking it hard. Entering SVU changes your point of view on the world, because with any other unit the bad guys are obvious. Yet here, anyone could be a bad guy; a friend, an adult you trusted, hell even your family. It was always cases revolving family that hit Mike the hardest.
“Hey,” you mumble as you nudge Mike’s foot with your own, and then letting it rest there. “We have an airtight case; Barba’s gonna be able to just throw him in prison.”
“I know, and that helps a little.” Mike sighs, leaning back into his chair and turning his head to you. “It’s just the thought that people knowingly do this, it’s despicable. And the two daughters, what about them? They’re pregnant and they’ve been brainwashed to worship their dad.”
“It’ll be tough for them, that’s for sure.” You reply honestly. “But Liv’s helping them find a home where they can help adjust. Things are getting better.”
You tried to sound optimistic, yet you knew Mike was still upset. There was so little that you could do, and that made you hurt with him.
"Here, come along.” You said as you stood up. Mike raised his eyebrows at you, and you gestured with your head towards the resting area; it was secluded and no one really ever went there.
You and Mike both walked in, and once he closed the door behind him you wrapped your arms around his neck, pulling him closer. He buried his head in the crook of your shoulder, and squeezed him tighter, trying to make him feel at home.
“I’m definitely interrupting something, am I?” You hear an all too familiar New York accent call out behind you.
You immediately whip away from Mike, and you see Carisi on the bed, leaning on his side as he smirks at the two of you.
“Carisi…” Mike says, cheeks tinted red. “This… This isn’t what it looks like.”
“Save it, Sarge.” Carisi chucked, getting up from the bed and standing up. He points a finger towards the two of you. “I knew something was going on.”
“I can’t believe you found out.” You mumbled, surprised that out of everyone on the squad, it was Sonny who found out. Sure the man was empathetic, yet he sure as hell wasn’t quick to catch on to things. “What are you even doing here? You’re supposed to be interviewing the witnesses.”
“Liv told me to take a break, since I was up all night taking care of my nieces.” Carisi explains, then narrowing his eyes at you. “You would’ve seen me come in if you two weren’t so in your little bubble.”
You glanced at Mike, and he was already beet red. You weren’t sure which emotion it was that caused it; embarrassment or annoyance. Mike looked at you and you shrugged, unsure of what to do. Mike was so sure that neither of you would get caught, yet here you guys are because you merely forget to check the beds.
You turned to Sonny, still a grin to his face. You roll your eyes and say, “So what are you going to do now?”
“I obviously have to tell the Lieutenant.” Sonny shrugs.
“Wait!” Mike exclaims. “You can’t do that.”
“Why?”
“If you tell Liv, then she’ll have to tell the higher ups.” Mike explains. “Including my father.”
You look at Mike, and he nods at you. Mike never really talked about his father to you, but you knew that Mike would have a lot to live up for. Saying that William Dodds was proud of Mike, that would be an understatement; Dodds Senior held Mike up as if he was a trophy. All he wanted for Mike was to go in the path he went and to climb the ladder of ambition, yet Mike wanted to stay at SVU. With you.
“Sonny, please.” You pleaded. “A Sargent and his officer? That’s not gonna go well.”
Sonny stared at the both of you, contemplating if he should cover for you. You stared at him, desperate for his disclosure. You never really realized how much trouble you and Dodds were in until now.
After what seemed like forever, Sonny then let out a sigh. “Fine, but you have to tell her yourselves or I will.”
“Thank you.” You sighed. “Don’t worry, no one else will find out.”
Yet it seemed like you and Dodds couldn’t catch a break. Within the next few weeks, Finn and Rollins had found out. You were playing around with Dodds by the vending machine, unaware by their presence. You made them promise as well not to tell Liv, and they lived up to it. Finn gave you a smug smile, claiming that he knew something was up for a few weeks back. You were right; you had to watch out for Finn.
Then one day, Liv called you and Dodds into her office. It was no secret about you and Dodds in the office; and you both didn’t know how to tell Liv. So she forced the upper hand.
“So, I’ve been trying to give you guys a chance and jump in front of it.” Liv explained as she closed the door behind you. She gestured towards the pair of chairs in front of her office, and you and Dodds took a seat. “But neither of you guys took the chance.”
You looked at Dodds, and he was staring straight at Olivia. You could tell he was just as scared as you; with his knee bouncing up and down and his clenched jaw. It all seemed so surreal in that moment; just a few weeks ago you and Dodds would be holding hands under the table and making sly winks at each other, yet here you are forced to come out in public. You started to think about it the other people on the squad kept their promise, or if they betrayed you.
“I asked the others what was going on between you two.” Olivia told you, as if she was reading your mind. “And of course they covered for you. So I have to ask you two myself; What is this secret about you guys going around the office?"
Mike kept shifting in his seat, opening and closing his mouth nervously. It dawned on you to see Mike this nervous before; he seemed like the older Sargent who always kept his cool. But here he was, unable to tell the truth like a little school boy.
"Dodds and I have been dating the past couple of months.” You confess. “Under the radar.”
Olivia’s eyebrows shot up, and she kept looking back towards you and Dodds. When you glanced over, you could see a pinkish tint over his face, and you slid your foot next to him and nudged his foot.
“Wow.” Olivia said, still surprised to hear that. “Well, I’m happy for you to, but you know what I have to do.”
“Before you tell anyone from the higher ups,” Mike interrupted. “Can you just give us time to tell my father first?”
Olivia sighed, and the look of contemplating written on her face as she weighed her options. She looked at you and you shrugged, unsure of what to tell her. Telling Mike’s father was the right thing to do, and he should hear it from no one but his son.
“Alright, I’ll give you some time.” Olivia sighed. “But if you don’t tell him soon, I’ll have to do that.”
“Thank you, Liv.” Mike gratefully replied.
“Mike, can you give us some time first?” Olivia asked as both of you got up. You turned to Mike and he looked up at, worried of what was coming next. You smiled and leaned over to give his hand a quick squeeze, reassuring him that you’ll be alright. Mike smiled back, then soon exiting the room. You sat back down and when you looked at Olivia, she was staring at you in this peculiar way.
“I’m sorry for not telling you sooner.” You apologized, making sure to right the wrong with Olivia. “I know you’ve been getting a lot of heat as lieutenant, and the fact that your own squad kept things from you is not excusable and-”
“It’s okay.” Olivia smiled, her tone now gentle and soft. “I just want to make sure what’s happening between you and Dodds is good.”
“What do you mean?”
“I was in a similar situation as you when I first started.” Olivia began, and you paid close attention. She never always told of her life in SVU, before the newbies came and it was just the same people for so many years. “My partner and I, we had a good relationship. Yet there wasn’t any room to grow, and I just want to make sure that what’s happening between you and Dodds isn’t the same.”
You smiled, thankful for her worry. Liv was like the mother of the squad, and she looked after everyone with care.
“Thank you for caring Liv, I understand where you’re coming from.” You said. You thought over what you were going to say next, thinking over your relationship with Mike. You couldn’t help but smile at yourself, and how special it was being with him. “I can assure you that what’s happening between Mike and I, it’s not a one time thing. He makes me want to become the best detective I can be, and I honestly see a future with him.”
You looked up at Olivia, and she looked at you with amazement. She nodded at you, then excused you. You got up and left her office, finding out that everyone was watching you from their desks. You walked over to Mike’s desk and sat down in the chair next to it, meeting his gaze with a smile.
“Everything good?” He whispered, and you nodded. “Now we just gotta break the ice with my dad.”
“We can do it.” You said confidently, looking up to see Liv in her office. She was already staring at you two, and there was an unsaid understanding between you two as Liv smiled to you before returning back to her paperwork.
