BLM chips in at the Cheyenne Greenway
This spring and fall, employees from the BLM Wyoming State Office took time to collect trash from Dry Creek along the City of Cheyenne Greenway. The events helped to fulfill their duties as adopters of this stretch of the urban trail, which runs parallel to the office.
“We’ve hosted clean up events for at least the last 10 years,” said Sam Cox, BLM Natural Resource Specialist and the lead organizer of the events. “We usually only do a cleanup in the spring. But, this year, we’re trying it out in the fall, too. We’ll see if it lessens the load next year.”
During the spring cleanup, over two dozen employees picked up 34 large dumpster bags of litter from the approximately quarter-mile section of trail. In the fall, seven volunteers collected six bags.
“Our famous Wyoming wind really carries it in to this drainage from around the city,” explained Cox.
Volunteers at the combined events include Wyoming State Director Mary Jo Rugwell and Associate State Director Larry Claypool.
“We’re very pleased that our office takes the initiative to plan these events,” said Claypool. “Like BLMers around the country, we’re members of the communities we live in, and opportunities like this give us the chance to demonstrate our local pride.”
BLM Wyoming’s 2018 contributions to the Cheyenne Greenway were not limited to the cleanups. Employees also planted 10 trees along the creek this summer, which they continue to water each week.
