David Bowie: ‘Lazarus’

David Bowie just released the music video for his magnificent new single, ‘Lazarus’ — a wonderfully brooding, sax-riddled track, which is also featured in Bowie’s own current off-Broadway musical of the same name.

The music video itself is a hauntingly understated affair, all in 1:1 format, where Bowie quite literally puts himself back in the closet.

‘Lazarus’ is the second single off Bowie’s 25th album, ★ (or ‘Blackstar’ for us mortals), which will be released tomorrow, on January 8th — Bowie’s own birthday.

As has evaded no-one’s attention whatsoever, today would have been David Bowie’s 70th birthday.

Out of last year’s seemingly endless string of celebrity deaths, Bowie’s untimely demise was probably one of the single events that hit me the hardest. Bowie was completely transcendent in a myriad of ways, and in his wake, he has left a unfillable void. However, the impact he has made on the music industry as a whole as well as on so many people’s lives in general is a cause for celabration.

In bittersweet commemoration, I’ll be listening a lot to one of my favourite Bowie performances: his breathtaking 1975 cover of ‘Wild is the Wind’.

Flying Lotus feat. Kendrick Lamar: ‘Never Catch Me’

The second single from Flying Lotus’ new album is a jazzy-hiphoppy deal with the always excellent Kendrick Lamar on guest vocals. Moreover, it’s shamelessly catchy. I, for one, am unable to stop my feet from doing a jig every time I happen to listen to it.

That feeling translates quite well to the track’s newly released music video, directed by Hiro Murai, where dead kids are seemingly brought back to life by the sheer catchiness of FlyLo’s beats.

Perfume Genius: ‘Grid’

Perfume Genius just released a music video for ‘Grid’, off his upcoming album ‘Too Bright’.

So far, the singles released from ‘Too Bright’ have been quite a departure from the primarily piano-driven, tear-jerking and hauntingly pretty songwriting of his previous albums. I, for one, am immensely enjoying the ride.

‘Too Bright’ drops on the 22nd.
