LUH: ‘$oro’

Among disappointing things to happen in 2012, WU LYFE’s break-up after releasing only one (spectacular!) album was right up there. As a silver lining, the former members have steadily released music on their own in the following years.

The latest being the new single ‘$oro’ from singer Ellery Roberts’ latest project LUH, alongside Ebony Hoon.

While bombastic and anthemic like their previous singles, ‘$oro’ furthermore takes on a beat-heavy, auto-tuned, almost EDM-banger quality. It is hard to pin down — but man, it’s vicious.

Father John Misty: ‘Real Love Baby’

Aside from his recent — albeit hilarious — antics, involving Prius jingles and House of Cards theme lyrics, we haven’t heard any actual music from Josh Tillman’s alter ego Father John Misty for almost half a year.

No more waiting. Today, Tillman dropped a new track named ‘Real Love Baby’. However, it is not quite clear whether it is an actual, non-ironic single — or if he’s just taking the piss out of late-70’s soft rock. Regardless, the track is shamelessly catchy.

Trentemøller: ‘River in Me’ (feat. Jehnny Beth)

After three years, Trentemøller is finally giving us a glimpse of things to come, in the shape of ‘River in Me’ — the first single off his upcoming album, ‘Fixion’.

The track features Savages’ Jehnny Beth on vocals, and very fittingly lies in the musical borderlands between her and Trentemøller, with its postpunkish soundscapes, etching beats and aggressive synths. Furthermore, it sports a bone-chillingly brutal music video, directed by Swedish director/artist duo RITON EMENIUS.

‘Fixion’ drops on September 16th.

ANOHNI: ‘Crisis’

Though ANOHNI’s new album ‘Hopelessness’ isn’t released until tomorrow, it’s already getting rave reviews.

Aside for the two singles already released, another song off the album, titled ‘Crisis’, has leaked — and it’s every bit as soul-shatteringly beautiful as its title implies.

‘Hopelessness’ drops on 6/5, 2016.

Since forming their new band Nice As Fuck earlier this year, Jenny Lewis, Au Revoir Simone’s Erika Forster, and the Like’s Tennessee Thomas have been playing various gigs in the US, including a Bernie Sanders benefit.

Now, however, they have also decided to treat us to their their first actual single, titled ‘Door’ — a straight-up punky tune, which is super catchy to boot.

The track is a fast-paced affair, drawing on a multitude of inspirations, and everything points to a tremendously interesting album.

Hamilton Leithauser + Rostam: ‘A 1000 Times’

So, I’m way outside the target group for Netflix’s latest teen drama ‘13 Reasons Why’ — but I’ll be darned if they haven’t been completely smashing it with the soundtrack, which features a variety of brilliant more or less well-known tracks from the past several decades.

An absolute standout is 2016’s ‘A 1000 Times’ by power duo Hamilton Leithauser + Rostam of the Walkmen and Vampire Weekend fame, respectively. The entire thing is impeccably produced, so ridiculously catchy that part of my brain is still convinced that it’s got to be a cover of something else, and Leithauser’s vocals have never sounded better.

Here’s to one more year of ‘A 1000 Times’ on repeat.

Uffie: ‘Sideways’

Ah, Uffie. Unsung pioneer of that often ripped-off Myspace-era sound (you know the one), and undisputed staple in my personal high school soundtrack — who, instead of blowing up into a bonafide pop phenomenon, just sort of disappeared for eight years.

2018 turned out to be the year of her surprise return. And August, 2018 turned out to be the month where she released this deliciously dark melodic pop fantasy, named ‘Sideways’.
