Disposables Are Indispensable

Imagine trying to deliver a baby without clean gloves. Or vaccinating a newborn without a sterile needle.

Three health workers at a maternity hospital in the Sharituz district of Tajikistan accept disposable medical supplies from IntraHealth International’s Feed the Future activity to improve the health and nutrition of mothers and children in the country.

Supplies—including syringes, cotton balls, infusion sets, face masks, and disposable exam and surgical gloves—were delivered to 14 maternity hospitals across the Khatlon province.

IntraHealth worked with the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of the Population to conduct assessments of these hospitals, which serve more than one million people. They found the facilities were facing a significant lack of sterile, disposable medical supplies critical to providing maternal, child, and newborn health care.

Sharituz is one of 12 districts in which the Feed the Future Tajikistan Health and Nutrition Activity is working to improve maternal, child, and newborn health care services, mainly through sanitation, hygiene, and nutrition.
