The Pretentious-O-Meter is a new website that aims to gauge how snooty your taste in film really is. Created by web developer Niall Beard, the site collects user-generated movie ratings from IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes, and compares them with critics’ scores. The greater the difference, the higher a film’s pretentiousness.

i think it’s pretty progressive because we’re getting an LGBT film depicting an interracial couple considering LGBT cinema always feature white couples.. its very seldom to see an Asian person as a love interest in an LGBT film so it’s a good start
Also: this is an important part of Chinese cinema, since, IIRC, the last lgbt movie that came from mainland (and not Taiwan or HK) was Lan Yu by Stanley Kwan in 2001. Kwan got his filming licence revoked for 2 (?) years and it was basically distributed via pirated DVDs and underground arthouse cinemas. Even after both of starring actors got famous in China (Liu Ye and Hu Jun), the film was still officially left out of their filmography whenever the media did a portfolio on them. This really is a pretty huge step.
The film editor to Mad Max is a woman! The editor to this gorgeous, incredibly visually coherent movie is a woman by the name of Margaret Sixel, who has NEVER EDITED AN ACTION MOVIE BEFORE. Talk about rising to the occasion!
George Miller said of her at the Cannes press conference that he wanted her to edit it because if guys did it, it would look like every other action movie out there. “She’s here to keep us from embarrassing ourselves,” Miller laughed. He continued, “The movie is like rubix cube; we needed someone with a lot of brainpower and a low threshold for boredom. She did not allow any repetition in the movie.”
Film editors don’t get nearly enough respect, and women film editors don’t get nearly enough respect OR employment. So Sixel is inspiring in every way.
If you think about it, the editor is the last person to see the movie in it’s raw form and the first to see it in it’s final form. They take all of the pieces of the movie and chose the takes you see in the film - the editor really is the person who makes the movie you see in the theater. So important and so underrated!

#i love this movie because it’s about a mother and a daughter#but they have their own complicated love lives#to deal with internally and externally#it’s about acceptance and love adn family#and it’s ASIAN#it’s so hilariously spot on with the Asian American jokes#i have made those jokes#it is just so nice to see a movie where the love interest for one of the characters is same sex#and yes it is relevant and drives the plot and is essential to recognize#but it’s treated as normal albeit with its own set of issues#just as wil’s mom has to deal with the fact that she’s pregnant#i love this movie so much and joan chen is flawless (via dealanexmachina)

On the basic level the ways in which we see Sophie is a representation of how she sees herself throughout the film. The fluctuations in her outward appearance come from fluctuations in her self esteem and attitude. Sophie does not see herself as beautiful or important when the film begins. This is reflected with her change into the very old woman directly after the Witch of Waste casts her curse. It is times when Sophie feels love, courage, pride, and true happiness that she lets her guard down and becomes her true self. Amazing background paintings from Summer Wars (サマーウォーズ). Hosoda is a genius and this film’s direction is divine. Looking at the same places from different angles… *stars in my eyes*
