tbh as awesome as that scene from Zootopia is I can’t help but laugh a little at Judy’s “It’s not a bunny would go savage” since rabbits can be really fucking aggressive meanwhile foxes are typically afraid of everything.

As someone who breeds angora rabbits AND owns a pet fox, I can 100% verify this. Rabbits can and will fuck you up. I had a rabbit named Hazard–you could not safely reach into her cage without welding gloves, because she would lunge and latch onto your arm and shake her head like a fucking dog. I have SCARS from rabbits.

My fox, meanwhile, is afraid of the dark. He’s afraid of the vacuum cleaner. He fears grasshoppers and cats. He fears strangers. He fears rabbits.

Idk that rounds up the metaphor even better

I mean, I’m just saying….

Y’know… for a movie supposedly about the evils of racism, Zootopia is an incredibly racist movie. I hope it’s just ignorantly racist rather than maliciously, but as a Black man, I couldn’t help but pick up on the film’s overall message of “racial profiling is justified”.

I can put aside the incredulous idea of a world full of naturally carnivorous animals have somehow adopted a meat-free diet (it’s a world of talking animals, so we already suspend our disbelief, but for better pro-veggie films, watch the
Wallace & Gromit series).

What really pissed me off when I saw it on the big screen last year - which is even more pronounced by the rabbit info above - is that if you’re going to take it as a metaphor for race relations, then it says that some races are naturally dangerous whilst other are naturally docile, as the the latter are right to be suspicious of the former.

The whole relationship of Nick (a born criminal carnivore) and Judy is based around the idea that Nick is “one of the good ones”; the idea that most people of the “bad race” are, well, bad, but that there are a few good ones that it’s okay to like.

(Yes, Ann Coulter really said that)

Even if you take out the idea of the berries (which itself suggests the “bad races” are prone to drug use which just exacerbates their violent behaviour), the key scene is the when Judy gives the press conference and an offended Nick calls her out on her bigotry. He takes a step toward her and she reaches for her holster. He’s not infected by the berries, but her natural inclination is to think of him as hostile.

THAT is the point of the film! That was the topic that needed to be addressed! Instead they go back into the berry mystery and consider everything solved because everyone goes to a concert together. The issue is considered over just because Nick gets Judy’s teary apology recorded on the pen. That’s a terrible idea to teach children: “Yeah, racism is bad, but some races are just naturally dangerous. If you meet one of the good ones, just say you’re sorry and consider the matter dropped.”

Because yeah, solving racism is that easy. There’s simplifying a message for kids, then there’s treating your audience like they’re stupid - guess which one Zootopia does?

So, uh…can you point out to me in the movie where it says that Judy’s prejudice is justified? Because I kind of saw the opposite. Especially since the actual villian of the story was a government official that was part of the majority that was purposefully drugging a minority to create conflict ave they show her to be in the wrong.

I just feel like I’m missing something here.

The movie was Zootopia; I think that was clear, seeing as how you know the character Judy.

And I give plenty of scene-specific examples above when the movie justifies her prejudice.

Just because they make a specific villain in Bellwether doesn’t mean they address the specific theme of the film: prejudice. Instead, they act as if solving the mystery puts an end to the prejudice; it says that bigotry is problem simple enough to be solved two opposing sides working together just once.

For a film aimed at kids, that’s a gross oversimplification of a serious problem.

Except every instance of racism that you mentioned (and several that you didn’t) gets called out? The movie even calls out Judy’s “You’re one articulate fella” line with a bit of dialogue that only makes sense as a callout. Each of the above examples is only half a scene or reeks of tunnel vision. I can go through each example if you’d like me to bit that seems like a waste of my time and yours.

“Racism is wrong” is the point of the movie, and has been part of the movie since they were trying to make Nick the protagonist. (They switched to Judy because having your protag start out cynical and broken doesn’t always work)

So I know what movie you think you saw, but I have no clue what movie you actually saw bc it really seems like it wasn’t the same Zootopia I saw.

And I don’t feel like repeating a point I’ve already made twice, no matter how much you ignore it.

Bye, Felicia.
