1. ‘Need For Speed Payback’ Review Round Up!

With the release date of ‘NFS Payback’ approaching at illegal speeds we’re guessing you’re just like us and are dying to go full throttle with it! After playing it at Gamescom earlier this year I can honestly say that from just a taste of that adrenaline fuelled feast, I want more. Well the review scores are in and the talk is mixed with it being a hit for some and a miss for others. We’ve included the big names below in one juicy post so you don’t have to stop for gas!

    IGN - 5.9/10

Need for Speed Payback is a big, competent, and confident arcade racer but it’s really let down by its linear cop chases, its overwrought and insidious upgrade system, its dreadful dialogue, and its superficial action sequences. It feels fine and it looks flashy, but Payback really went all-in on its direct-to-DVD revenge tale and it was a bust for me.

…Need for Speed Payback is a game with a brilliant story at its core. Silly, over the top and a little bit self-indulgent, but in a fantastic action movie way. It works and you’ll enjoy every car chase, nitrous boost and quippy millennial line. It just misses the mark by adding RPG elements into an arcade racer and making the best cars always just out of reach.

    Gamespot - 5/10

Need for Speed Payback is the kind of arcade racer that never requires you to lift your foot off the accelerator. Its brazen drifting is effortlessly achieved with aggressive cornering and feathering the brakes, and judicious bursts of nitrous are your best friend down any stretch of open road. There are few games of its ilk nowadays, but perhaps Payback points to a reason why. Despite its impressive visuals and contemporary trappings, Payback’s pick-up-and-play driving model harkens back to Need for Speed Underground and its Fast and the Furious-inspired street racing. Yet, unlike the series’ heyday, Payback’s arcade sensibilities aren’t enough to save the game surrounding it from wallowing in mundanity.

    Eurogamer - (No Scores)

The open world itself is absolutely fine, and it’s most certainly on a grander scale than what’s gone before in the Need for Speed series. Its city, a tangled knot of freeways and sidestreets that work their way through the neon chaos, brings to mind Most Wanted, while further out in the desert the long open road recalls the highs of Hot Pursuit. It’s certainly filled with things to do, as well; there are billboards to smash, speed traps to trigger and derelict vehicles to discover. Need for Speed Payback does all that you’d expect of a modern day open world racer, though rarely does it do any more.

EA and Ghost Games set out to make the quintessential Need for Speed by bringing in aspects that worked in the past and has mostly succeeded. The unnecessary narrative ultimately holds the game back, but it’s a blast once the world is made available to the player. The off-road racing is addicting and the search for Derelicts could remain a mainstay with the franchise moving forward. This is much less of a CAR-PG than the previous game, as players will be able to build a great library of cars much quicker. Add to this an excellent livery editor and community features, and the core elements of Need for Speed Payback will keep fans playing for quite a while.

    CG Magazine - 8/10

Need for Speed Payback is a fine game with far more organ music than expected of a 2017 release. Those of you who don’t enjoy it will not be able to complain about poor gameplay mechanics, but your concerns with other parts of the game would be valid. I have a feeling that the loot boxes will end up concerning people, but if it becomes a problem for the masses that can be easily fixed. What makes me happy is that the core elements of Payback are well polished. The cars are fun to drive, the events change enough to avoid being boring, roads are crafted with great drifts in mind, and the online racing brings people together for a good time. Payback is certainly not without its problems, but there are more pros then there are cons in this package. If you’re on the fence about this one, you can calm down and go buy it already. I don’t think anyone is going to name it game of the year, but you won’t regret adding it to your library.
