What do you do?

I’m a freelance radio producer/reporter & occasional writer.

What do you want to see (or hear) more of in radio?

Diversity! Specifically more young, diverse voices. It’s really intimidating to enter a field that is run predominantly by white, upper-middle class people. As a Latina from a single-parent, lower-socioeconomic household, I don’t really hear my voice or experience represented in a lot of what I listen to. I think the biggest culprit of this is unpaid internships. The only people who can afford to work for free are people with a lot of privilege.

Writing a supernatural audio drama series with my collaborator and co-host Julia Schifini. We have the podcasting bug, and we can’t wait to branch out into fiction! We are looking for production partners to support us with scoring, audio mixing, casting, and general feedback – let us know if this sounds like you!

What is your favorite part about radio?

To me, radio reporting is the most intimate form of storytelling there is. People invite radio journalists into the most personal parts of their daily lives: when they get ready in the morning, over breakfast, during their commute. That requires such a high level of trust between the radio reporter and the listener. I take that level of intimacy and faith very seriously, and it’s the thing I admire more about the radio.

Name: Calkidan Fisseha

Age: 19

Location: Washington, DC

What do you do?

I am a DJ and contributor for American University’s radio station, WVAU. I also write for All Things Go, a DC and NYC music blog. Right now, I’m taking this summer to do some writing and get back in tune with myself after my freshman year of college. I’m not quite sure of what I want to do with my life, but I know I want to make people laugh. One day, it would be awesome to have my own sitcom so I’ve been doing a lot brainstorming.

Why do you love listening?

I’ve been listening to NPR since I was in elementary school and would always beg my mom to put on “regular” radio. When I was younger, I was convinced NPR was the most boring thing in the world, but I definitely see the benefits of it now. It’s a greate way to stay informed and learn new things; anything from history, to stories, to current events.

Name: Adhiti Bandlamudi

Age: 22

Location: Atlanta, Georgia

What do you do?

I’m a recent graduate of the University of Georgia in Arabic and Journalism.  Right now I’m an investigative intern for WSB, but my position is temporary. I’m looking for opportunities, but I am really pursuing jobs in public radio. Apart from job hunting, I spend my free time practicing calligraphy, watching lots of television, and learning about video production.

You can find samples of my work at my soundcloud here. I also just produced an hour long radio special that was broadcast on WUGA, the NPR member station, on 4th of July. You can find that story here.

What do you want to see (or hear) more of in radio?

I have three hopes for radio in the future: 1) I want to see more radio shows performing shows and traveling around to visit fans. I saw Radiolab Live and I cried, it was the best experience. I think radio is such a social medium and something we all like to experience together. Immersive shows make it more entertaining, while also sneaking in some important content. 2) I would love to see more innovative sound design. I think programs like Snap Judgement do a really good job of creating a soundscape and demanding the attention of the listener. I want to see more programs doing that. 3) I want to see more collaborations happening within public media. ProPublica teamed up the NPR to do an investigative series on the American Red Cross and it was incredibly interesting and really made people think critically about that organization. This American Life and the Marshall Project teamed up  to tell The Unbelievable Story of Rape, which brought to light important flaws in our justice system with taking rape allegations seriously. I think the best stories come about when we work together and I want NPR to be at front of that.

Age: 22

Location: Washington, DC

What do you do?

Audio production and booking!!

Clips/sample work?

I don’t have real clips but you could link to the source of the week Tumblr, which is something I’ve put a lot of time into! I’m working on a story right now but it won’t be published before tomorrow. Sourceoftheweek.tumblr.com or sources.npr.org

What are you working on? I’m most interested in audio production, so I’ve been working on developing those skills in my free time. I’m currently the diversity in news intern at NPR, where I’ve been working on a source database of people of color. The idea is that a journalist will access the database and find experts of color that will create more diverse voices in radio coverage. When my internship ends, I’ll be sticking around NPR, temping on the diversity desk. I’m also in the beginning stages of developing a podcast about siblings with my younger brother.

What do you love about radio?

I love spoken word stories and the community feel of radio. I like to think that I could get my friends to gather around a radio and listen to something that’s happening in the world around them.
