What is my major?

To answer the question of what my major is, I am a Computer Science major. I also hold a minor in French and soon, a minor in Business Administration. You’re probably thinking, “Wow, that’s a lot”. Yes, indeed that is a lot but please let me explain. The reason why it looks like I have a ton going on academically is well….I have changed my academic plan around quite a lot. When I came to USF I was actually an International Business major with a minor in French. The reason why I was an International Business major was because I was a part of the international program at my high school. I took French as a language and not only did I host a French student when I was a sophomore in high school, but I also went abroad to Italy and France when I was a junior in high school. This international experience is what not only motivated me to declare a French minor (since I loved studying the language so much) but also declare International Business since I love strategizing and thinking about business and economics on a global level. It was not until an internship I did the summer after my freshman year at USF that made me change my academic plan. I was a marketing intern for a technology startup and worked very closely with four other software engineers. I participated in not only marketing efforts but also product development and customer support. I basically learned the ins and outs for starting a tech company! This is what motivated myself to take an Intro Computer Science course when I returned last fall and ever since then, I fell in love with Computer Science and switched my major completely. What I love about it is that you get to build cool products and have a deeper understanding for how technology works, something that millions of people around the world use every day. As far as the business minor I’m about to declare, well the reason for that is one, I already took nearly half the business major core classes and two, I wish to get into product development in my career. With this career path in mind, taking extra business course is very beneficial. And besides, I love business classes and it is something that I miss since I switched over. I hope this gave you a little insight as to why I am a Computer Science major. For those interested, keep in mind that it is a hard major and you will need to spend lots of hours coding especially if you have never done any before (like myself). Other wise, if you are interested in CS, I would say do it! You will be learning a skill that not very many people know currently and will be super beneficial no matter what career path you choose.
